  • Marine diesel engines with high thermal efficiency and fuel diversity used for propulsive power have been taking charge of important position on marine transport. However, marine environment has recently focused on emissions such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide which is generated from combustion of low grade fuels. EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) system is one of effective methods to reduce the nitrogen oxide emission from marine diesel engines. In general, it is considered that recirculating gas influences fuel combustion and emissions in diesel engines. However, along with positive effects of EGR, the EGR system using fuels of including high sulfur concentration should be considered about re-combustion and activation of sulfur dioxide in recirculating gas. Therefore, in experimental study, an author investigates effects of sulfur dioxide mixture concentration in intake air on combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine. In results, change of sulfur dioxide concentrations in intake air had negligible impact on combustion chamber pressure, rate of heat release and emissions compared with effects of oxygen decreasing and carbon dioxide increasing of EGR.

  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to reduce NOx emission, to improve fuel economy, and to suppress knock since it offers the benefits of the inlet charge dilution. The effects of EGR was investigated on the performance and emission to reduce exhaust thermal load with a single cylinder liquid-phase LPG injection engine, in a wide range of EGR rate, engine conditions and LPG proportions. As EGR rate was increased, NOx was reduced while HC was increased. Pumping loss reduction by EGR improved bsfc and increased EGR lowered exhaust gas temperature. And, LPG proportions were made a difference on the performance and emission characteristics.

  • Current common rail engines are equipped with cooled EGR systems by using an engine cooling water system. In this study, investigations of exhaust gas reduction characteristics have been carried out in the common rail engine system depending on the EGR rate variation. The experimental results shows that NOx reduces and smoke increases as the EGR rate increases.

  • In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for direct injection diesel engine. It is tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenate blended fuel which has four kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission and brake specific fuel consumption rate have been investigated. Dimethyl carbonate(DMC) contains oxygen component 53.3% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of carbonate group that the smoke emission of DMC is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and EGR method.

  • For the development of high efficiency and low emission combustion systems, high temperature air combustion technology has been tested by utilizing preheated air over 1100 K and exhaust gas recirculation. In this system, combustion air is diluted with large amount of recirculated exhaust gases, such that the oxygen concentration is relatively low in the reaction zone, leading to low flame temperature. Since, the temperature fluctuations and sound emissions from the flame are small and flame luminosity is low, the combustion mode is expected to be flameless or mild combustion. Experiment was performed to investigate the turbulent flame structure and NO$_x$ emission characteristics in the high temperature air combustion focused on coflowing jet diffusion flames which has a fundamental structure of many practical combustion systems. The effect of turbulence has also been evaluated by installing perforated plate in the oxidizer inlet nozzle. LPG was used as a fuel. Results showed that even though NO$_x$ emission is sensitive to the combustion air temperature, the present high temperature air combustion system produce low NO$_x$ emission because it is operated in low oxygen concentration condition by the high exhaust gas recirculation.

  • The effects of intake mixture temperature on performance and exhaust emissions under four kinds of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, swirl chamber type, water-cooled diesel engine with scrubber EGR system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop the scrubber exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) control system for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce $NO_x$ emissions. And a novel diesel soot-removal device of cylinder-type scrubber with five water injection nozzles is specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The influences of cooled EGR and water injection, however, would be included within those of scrubber EGR system. In order to survey the effect of intake mixture temperature on performance and exhaust emissions, the intake mixtures of fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas are heated by a heating device with five heating coils made of a steel drum. It is found that the specific fuel consumption rate is considerably elevated by the increase of intake mixture temperature, and that $NO_x$ emissions are markedly decreased as EGR rates are increased and intake mixture temperature is dropped, while soot emissions are increased with increasing EGR rates and intake mixture temperature. Thus one can conclude that the performance and exhaust emissions are considerably influenced by the cooled EGR.

  • Th effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of combustion exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption(SFC) are experimentally investigated by four-cylin-der four-cycle and direct injection marine diesel engine. In order to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines a novel diesel soot removal system with a cylinder-type scrubber which has water injector(4 nozzles in 1.0mm diameter)is specially designed and manufactured for the experi-mental system. The obtained results are as follows; The combustion pressure in cylinder is decreased and ignition is delayed with increasing EGR rate. The accumulated quantity of heat release is slightly decreased and the tendency of heat release rate is not constant. NOx and Soot emissions are decreased by maximum 7% and 540% with scrubber tan without scrubber in the range of experimental conditions. Those are increased at the lean burn area with increasing equivalence ration in the constant value of engine speed and EGR rate. Also those are decreased with increasing EGR rate in the constant value of engine speed and equivalence ratio.

  • This paper presents a neural network approach to control exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) in a Liquefied Petroleum Gas(LPG) engine. In order to meet Increasingly stringent automotive exhaust emission regulations, alternative fuels such as LPG engines have been developed in many countries. HC&CO emissions of LPG engines can be easily reduced through air-fuel ratio control, but the control effect on NOx reduction is not good enough. Consequently EGR system is introduced to achieve a significant reduction in NOx emissions. Conventional EGR control uses the mapping method. The calibration time is long and the work is complex when adopting this mapping method. However neural networks are suitable f...

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on exhaust emissions under four kinds of nozzle tip with the different fuel consumption rates are experimentally investigated by using an once-through boiler with a FGR system. The purpose of this study is to develop the FGR control system for reducing $NO_x$ emissions in boilers. Intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and equivalence ratio are considered to figure out the effect of FGR rate on exhaust emissions at various fuel consumption rates. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions are markedly decreased, while soot emissions are increased owing to the drop of intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations, and the rise of equivalence ratio as FGR rates are elevated. One can also conclude that the reduction in $NO_x$ emissions is more considerably influenced by the variation of equivalence ratio due to the FGR rate than the fuel consumption rate.
