  • Renewable energy sources based on solar radiation, wind energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy have now reached the level of industrial application. A new way to generate electricity using low-potential heat is to install a hydro-steam turbine. In hydro-steam turbines, hot water is supplied directly to turbine rotor nozzles without prior separation into steam and water in separators, which significantly increases the efficiency of hot water energy use. Such turbines are suggested to be used as autonomous energy sources in geothermal heating systems, heating water boilers and cooling systems of chemical reactors, metallurgical furnaces, etc. The authors conclude that the installation of hydro-steam turbines in heating plants and process boiler plants can also be effective if the used exhaust steam-water mixture at the turbine outlet is used to heat the network water or as return water.

  • In order to reduce the smoke emission from the in-service city bus, this study was evaluated the particulate reduction efficiency and regeneration ability of the catalitic trap oxidizer (CTO) on the city bus (D0846HM engine) equipped with it. Before the on-road CTO test, the laboratory test of CTO on engine test-bench was performed. Reduction efficiencies of smokes and particulates were 54 and 45%, and those of gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) were 90 and 60%. In order to evaluate the regeneration ability of the CTO by the catalytic oxidation of trapped particulate, field test was performed on the in-service road. The regeneration temperature was 350$^\circ$ which was same with the exhaust temperature of city bus.

  • This study used numerical methods to investigates investigate the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) effect under the condition of boost pressure condition on a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion engine using numerical methods. The detailed chemical-kinetic mechanisms and thermodynamic parameters for n-heptane, iso-octane, and PRF50 from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) are were used for this study. The combustion phase affects the efficiency and power. To exclude these effects, this study decided to maintain a 50 burn point (CA50) at 5 CA after top dead center aTDC. The results showed that the EGR increased, but the low temperature heat release (LTHR), negative temperature coefficient (NTC), and high temperature heat release (HTHR) were weakened due by theto effect of the O2 reduction. The combined EGR and boost pressure enhanced the autoignition reactivity, Hhence, the LTHR, NTC, and HTHR were enhanced, and the heat-release rate was increased. also In addition, EGR decraeased the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), but the combined EGR and boost pressure increased the IMEP. As a results, combining the ed EGR and boost pressure was effective to at increase increasing the IMEP and maintaining the a low PRR.

  • NOx (Nitrogen oxide) in the exhaust gas from vehicle engines is considered one of the most harmful substances in air pollution problems. NOx is made when combustion occurs under high temperature conditions and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is normally used to lower the combustion temperature. As the EGR ratio increases, the NOx level becomes low, but a high EGR ratio makes the combustion unstable and causes further air pollution problems, such as CO and unburned hydrocarbon level increase. This study showed that fuel droplets could move more freely by the radiation of sonic wave for the stable combustion. In addition, the engine performance improved with increasing EGR ratio. As a basic study, the effect of sonic wave radiation on the velocity of fuel droplets was studied using CFD software. The results showed that the velocity of small droplets increased more under high frequency sonic wave conditions and the velocity of the large droplets increased at low frequency sonic wave conditions. In addition, an engine analysis model was used to study the effects of the increased combustion stability. These results showed that a 15% increase in EGR ratio in combustion resulted in a 45% decrease in NOx and a 10% increase in thermal efficiency.

  • Diesel exhaust (DE) has been recognized as a noxious mutagen and/or carcinogen, because its components can form DNA adducts. Mechanisms governing the susceptibility to DE and the efficiency of such DNA adduct formation require clarification. The transcription factor Nrf2 is essential for inducible and/or constitutive expression of a group of detoxification and antioxidant enzymes, and we hypothesized that the nrf2 gene knockout mouse might serve as an excellent model system for analyzing DE toxicity. To address this hypothesis, lungs from nrf2(-/-) and nrf2(+/-) mice were examined for the production of xenobiotic-DNA adducts after exposure to DE (3 $mg/m^{3}$ suspended particulate matter) for 4 weeks. Whereas the relative adduct levels (RAL) were significantly increased in the lungs of both nrf2(+/-) and nrf2(-/-) mice upon exposure to DE, the increase of RAL in the lungs from nrf2(-/-) mice exposed to DE were approximately 2.3-fold higher than that of nrf2(+/-) mite exposed to DE. In contrail, cytochrome P4501Al mRNA levels in the nrf2(-/-)mouse lungs were similar to those in the nrf2(+/-) mouse lungs even after exposure to DE, suggesting that suppressed activity of phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes is important in giving ise to the increased level of DNA adducts in the Nrf2-null mutant mouse subjected to DE. Importantly, severe hyperplasia and accumulation of the oxidative DNA adduct 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine were observed in the bronchial epidermis of nrf(-/-) mite following DE exposure. These results demonstrate the increased susceptibility of the nrf2 germ line mutant mouse to DE exposure and indicate the nrf2 gene knockout mouse nay represent a valuable model for the assessment of respiratory DE toxicity.

  • Hi Air Korea and Hanwha ocean are currently developing an Onboard Carbon dioxide Capture System (OCCS) to absorb CO2 emitted from ship's engine using a sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solution, and converting the resulting salt into a solid form through a chemical reaction with calcium oxide (CaO). The system process involves the following steps; 1)The reaction of CO2 gas absorption in water, 2)The reaction between carbonic acid (H2CO3) and NaOH solution to produce carbonate or bicarbonate, and 3)The reaction between carbonate or bicarbonate and CaO to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3). And ultimately, the solid material, CaCO3, is separated and discharged using a separator. The OCCS has been installed on an ship and the test results have confirmed significant reduction effects of CO2 in the ship's exhaust gas. A portion of the exhaust gas emitted from the engine was transferred to the OCCS using a blower. The flow rate of the transferred gas ranged from 800 to 1384 m3/hr, and the CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas was 5.1 vol% for VLSFO, 3.7 vol% for LNG and a 12 wt% NaOH solution was used. The results showed a CO2 capture efficiency of approximately 42.5 to 64.1 vol% and the CO2 capture rate approximately 48.4 to 52.2kg/hr. Additionally, to assess the impact of the discharged CaCO3on the marine ecosystem, we conducted "marine ecotoxicity test" and performed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to evaluate the dispersion and dilution of the discharged effluent.

  • After a reheating furnace installation, the modification of the size and the heat capacity is very difficult. Therefore, the development of design package tool is required for the computation on the correct specifications before the design and the installation. Prior to development of the design tool, a module that calculates the amount of heat loss of each part according to the specifications for determining the thermal efficiency of a continuous heating furnace was developed and applied to the oxy-fuel industrial furnace. Through this, the effects of fuel type, oxygen fraction and recirculation on the efficiency of the furnace of which the output is 110Ton/hour were analyzed. In oxy-fuel combustion condition, the efficiency was 15% higher than air combustion conditions. With the using COG(Coke Oven Gas) instead of LNG, the efficiency was slightly increased. In the air combustion condition, the efficiency was increased about 33% with the preheated air. But, in oxy-fuel condition, the amount of exhaust gas was reduced, so the efficiency was increased about 7%.

  • The energy consumption efficiency in a variety of operational test mode was considered for domestic gas boiler below 70 kW. The energy efficiency test carried out in the experimental conditions similar to the actual operation status was analyzed and compared with the current Korean efficiency test method. Four types of test modes for each boiler(Non-condensing and condensing boiler) were carried out in the condition of laboratory mode(full load, steady state) and actual operating mode. Futhermore divided into two operational status for each of these, it was applied by maximum gas consumption and consumer sales conditions. Test equipment has the function referred to gas boiler standards, such as KS or European standard EN. The equipment should be continuously measured and record the measuring factors which are the flow volume of gas and water, laboratory temperature, water flow volume for heating, return water volume after heating and quantity of the exhaust gases(CO, NO, $NO_2$). The experimental results were found that non-condensing boiler efficiency of laboratory mode is about 10% higher than that of actual mode. In case of condensing boiler, the efficiency of laboratory condition is about 20% higher than that of the actual using conditions. I suggest that the government will gradually take the efficiency test method considering the actual conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a Eco smoking booth that can effectively reduce hazardous pollutants generated during smoking and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of removing hazardous pollutants. The design and manufacture of an eco-friendly automatic smoking booth equipped with deodorizing facilities, such as inlet - HEPA filter - electrostatic precipitator (EP) - impregnated activated carbon - exhaust port, etc., and the efficiency of removing hazardous pollutants from inside and outside was measured and evaluated. The complex odor removal efficiency was 95.37% inside the smoking booth, and 97.38% at the exit of the preventive facility. The carbon monoxide removal efficiency was 94.25% in the inside and 98.32% in the outlet. In addition, the removal efficiency of particulate matter, (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) inside the smoking booth was 98.59%, and 98.85% at the outlet. The total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) decreased from $26,000{\mu}g/m^3$ to $5,203{\mu}g/m^3$ in the smoking booth, resulting in 79.99% removal efficiency. After the ventilator was operated, the measured effluent concentration was $5,019{\mu}g/m^3$, and the removal efficiency was 80.70%. Therefore, the smoking booth designed and manufactured through this study can be applied to the removal of harmful pollutants even in the small working environment in the future.

  • Natural gas is one of the most promising alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels because of its high thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions, including $CO_2$. Although the high octane value of natural gas increases engine output and efficiency due to the high compression ratio, this fuel is prone to such difficulties as a narrow limit of inflammability and a slow combustion speed in the lean burn operation domain, leading to unstable combustion and higher emissions of harmful exhaust gases. Hydrogen blended with natural gas can extend the lean burn limit while maintaining stable, efficient combustion and achieving lower NOx, hydrocarbon and green house gas emissions. In this study, the effect of hydrogen addition on an engine performance and NOx emission characteristics was investigated in a heavy duty natural gas engine. The results showed that thermal efficiency was increased and NOx emissions were reduced due to the expansion of lean operation range under stable operation. NOx emission can be significantly reduced with the retard of spark advance timing.
