The Effects of Tai Chi Exercise on Depression, Quality of Life and Self-efficacy in Patients with Parkinson's Disease (태극권이 파킨슨병 환자의 우울, 자기효능감 및 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: To examine the effects of Tai Chi exercise (TCE) on depression, quality of life and self-efficacy in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Method: A nonequivalent control-group pre and posttest design was used. Of the 30 participants 15 were assigned to the experimental group and 15 to the control group. The experimental group participated in 8 weeks of TCE which included one day of exercise with instructor on site and 3 days of self-exercise at home guided by a videotape. Results: The 8 weeks of TCE were found to be significantly effective in enhancing quality of life and self-efficacy. However there was no significant difference in the level of depression. Conclusion: These results suggest that TCE has positive effect on quality of life and self-efficacy in patients with PD. Research over an extended period with the TCE intervention is recommended to identify further effects.

Psychological and Physical Effects of Schroth and Pilates Exercise on Female High School Students with Idiopathic Scoliosis

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of psychological factors on Schroth exercise and Pilates exercise to female high school students with idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: Sixteen subjects with over 20 of Cobb's angle were randomly divided into Schroth exercise group (SEG, n=8) and Pilates exercise group (PEG, n=8). Both training programs were carried out 3 day a week for 12 weeks. Psychological factors were measured using depression scale, self esteem scale and body esteem scale. Results: Both groups showed significant differences in depression scale, self esteem scale and body esteem scale. Schroth exercise group showed greater improvement than Pilates group. Conclusion: Having correct body image affects psychological factors to growing students. Schroth exercise is more effective method to physical and psychological approach of idiopathic scoliosis.

Cognitive Function, Depression and Quality of Life according to the Demographic Characteristics and Physical Activity Type of the Elderly (노인의 사회인구학적 특성과 신체활동유형에 따른 인지기능, 우울 및 삶의 질)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the difference of cognitive function, depression, and quality of life according to demographic factors and exercise participation among 148 elderly over 60 years old. The cognitive function was measured by the Korean version of mini mental state exam, Digit span test, Trail making test, and the Stroop test. Also the psychological variables were showed depression and quality of life. As a results, first, depending on the degree of demographic characteristics of elderly had significant difference. Second, according to the participation of the exercise, the score was higher than the aged who did not participate in the exercise. Third, there were significant differences according to duration of exercise, period of exercise, frequency of exercise, and exercise time of the aged that who participate in exercise. Lastly, the cognitive function, depression and quality of life of the subjects were found to be correlated. In conclusion, the aged need to regularly participate in various exercise and physical activity programs to improve the quality of life by improving the cognitive function and decreasing depression of the elderly.

Effect of Exercise on Mental Health in Female Elementary School Teachers (초등학교 여교사의 운동실천정도가 정신건강에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise on mental health in female elementary school teachers. Methods: The subjects were 1,861 female elementary school teachers in Seoul. Data were collected through an online survey from November 16 to December 7, 2008. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, one way ANOVA and Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, using IBM SPSS 20.0 program. Results: Not many female elementary school teachers were engaging in exercise. Even though their perception of stress and degree of depression were high, the rate of suicidal thoughts were low. The perception of stress was lower in the female teachers who engaged in walking or high-intensity workout than those who did not. The teachers who walked or stretched for exercise showed a lower rate of depression than those who did not and the teachers who walked for exercise displayed a lower rate of suicidal thoughts. Conclusion: Exercise programs should be provided for female elementary school teachers to reduce their stress, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

A Study on the Participation Motives, Successful Aging, Health Behavior and Depression in Women after Menopause (폐경 후 여성의 참여 동기 및 성공적 노화, 건강행위, 우울감에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the participants' motivation, successful aging level, health behavior and depression level, and to find out the correlation in order to develop a self-management program that helps women successfully age after menopause and lower depression. The study data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, and one-way ANOVA for 252 postmenopausal women. The results of the study showed that the difference in the level of exercise participation motivation and successful aging according to general characteristics showed statistically significant differences according to health level, exercise type, exercise help, residence, etc. The level of health behavior and depression differed significantly according to age, health level, type of exercise, and exercise period, etc. In addition, the level of depression was significantly different according to cohabitation family. The correlation analysis result showed that the correlation coefficient between exercise participation motivation, successful aging, and health behavior was significant at the level of .001, and between depression and health behavior at the level of correlation coefficient of .05. We conclude that it is very important to develop a self-managed exercise program for postmenopausal women, as it will help successful aging and reduce depression.

The Impact of The Cervical Exercise Training on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Patient's Cervical Pain Levels and Depression Factor (경부운동훈련이 외상 후 스트레스 장애 환자의 경부통증 수준, 우울 요인에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: This study investigates the impact of the cervical musculoskeletal intervention on post-traumatic stress disorder patient's cervical pain levels and depression factor. Methods: Thrty neck pain patients diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder were enrolled. Neck exercise training using a sling system was applied to the experimental group and self-neck movement exercise, modification of the McKenzie exercise, was applied to the control group. Both groups were checked every week whether they performed or not. Both groups performed their exercise for 35 minutes for a time and 3 times per week. Total period of the intervention was 6 weeks. To compare the effects of interventions, threshold of cervical tenderness and depression level were measured before and after the each intervention and also measured at follow-up. Results: Painthreshold of left trapezius showed a significant difference between two groups at three points. It increased 19.71% in the experimental group after the intervention compared to before the intervention. At follow-up it also increased 20.06% in the experimental group. Pain threshold of right trapezius showed a significant difference at three points. It increased 18.35% in the experimental group after the intervention compared to before the intervention. At follow-up it also increased 15.93% in the experimental group. According to the result interaction between groups and measurement time in both side of trapezius was valid. Depression level showed significant difference in the experimental group between three points. It decreased 18.07% after the intervention compared to before the intervention and decreased 15.21% at follow-up. According to the result interaction between groups and measurement time in depression level was valid. Conclusions: This study has important implications as the therapeutic strategy, high potent of improving symptoms, shows effect to a subject who has psychological problem such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Effects of Exercise Program on Cognitive Function, Depression, and Life Satisfaction in Elderly (12주간 운동 프로그램이 노인의 인지기능, 불안 및 생활 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this research was to examine conduction of 12 week exercise program for the aged of sanatorium on their cognitive function, depression, uneasiness, and living satisfaction. The subject of this research was 60 aged persons of H sanatorium in H-si and mental status examination and survey on depression criterion, uneasiness measurement, and living satisfaction of the aged were conducted. To examine the effects of the program, paired t-test was conducted. As a result, there were significant differences after 12-week exercise program in all factors such as cognitive function, depression, uneasiness and living satisfaction of the subjects. In conclusion, regular exercise program may positive effects on mental status cognitive status, depression, uneasiness, and living satisfaction of the aged. Therefore proper exercise form and program are necessary to the aged in long term care facilities.

The Effects of Lebed Method Exercise on Nurses' Depression, Anxiety, and Stress (레베드 요법(Lebed Therapy)이 간호사의 우울, 불안과 스트레스에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of Lebed method exercise (LME) on nurses' depression, anxiety and stress. The LME is a therapeutic exercise and movement program developed by Sherry Lebed Davis and expected to lessen the stress level of nurses and enhance the nursing job's satisfaction and efficiency. This study was utilized a non equivalent control group pre-post test design. Method: The subjects were 36 nurses in total; 18 in experimental group and 18 in control group. The data were collected from March to August, 2008. For the experimental group, 8 hour-long lectures on stress management and LME were given for 12 weeks. For the control group, only lectures on stress management was given. Depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and heart rate variability were measured on the subjects in both groups as pre- and post tests. The data were analyzed by Kolmogrov-Smirov test and P-P plot, t-test and $x^2-test$ using the SPSS program. Results: As proposed in the hypothesis, the subjects in the experimental group experienced less depression (t=2.286, p=.029), less anxiety (t=3.319, p=.002) and less perceived stress(t=2.862, p=.007) than those in the control group. Conclusion: The LME is considered an effective exercise to improve depression, anxiety, and to lessen stress for the nurses. The LME program has potential to be one of the effective stress management interventions for nurses in the future.

The Effect of walking exercise on the improvement of housewives' Self-esteem, Stress, Depression in terms of convergence (주부의 걷기운동 참여가 융복합차원에서 자아존중감과 스트레스 및 우울증개선에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of walking exercise on the improvement of housewives' Self-esteem, Stress, or Depression. Among 35-45 year-old housewives 24 subjects were divided into experimental and control groups of 12. Total of 45 experiments on walking exercise program were conducted three times a week, for 15 weeks, lasted over 30 min to 10,000 steps. The result is as follows. About the improvement of Self-esteem, Stress, Depression, there was significant difference of not only the main effect between the groups but also the main effect between prior and post. And there was significant difference of the interaction effects between groups and periods. From the results, we can know walking exercise have a positive effect on the improvement of Self-esteem, Stress, or Depression for housewives of no sustained exercise. As regular physical activity, regarding convergence, is good for emotional development, we suggest housewives may have to join in physical activities consistently.

Pre-post Comparisons on Physical Symptoms, Balance, Muscle Strength, Physical Functioning, and Depression in Women with Osteoarthritis after 12-week Tai Chi Exercise (타이치 운동교실 참여 후 골관절염 여성환자의 통증, 체력, 신체기능 및 우울의 변화)

  • Objective. The 12 forms of Sun-style Tai Chi exercise has been developed specifically for arthritis patients in order to reduce their symptoms and to improve physical functioning. This quasi-experimental study examined the changes in pain, balance, muscle strength and physical functioning in women with osteoarthritis at the completion of the 12 week Tai Chi exercise program. Methods. The patients with osteoarthritis who signed the consent form were screened by their primary physician according to the inclusion criteria and invited to the study. Total of 66 osteoarthritis women with an average age of 63 years were participated in the Tai Chi exercise. At the completion of 12 weeks, 34 patients completed both pretest and posttest measures with 48% of overall dropout rate. Outcome measures were physical symptoms, balance, muscle strength, physical functioning, and depression. Paired t-test was utilized to examine differences between pre and post-measures. Results. After participating in the Tai Chi exercise program, the women with osteoarthritis showed significant improvements in their physical fitness measures, and consequently in their physical functioning. In physical fitness test, there were significant improvements in balance, flexibility, muscle strengths of knee, grip, and back muscles after the Tai Chi exercise. However, No significant differences were found in pain and stiffness of their knee joints and depression measure. Conclusion. The 12 forms of Tai Chi exercise has been found safely applicable to the older women with osteoarthritis for 12 weeks, and effective in improving balance, flexibility, and muscle strengths, and consequently lessening difficulties of performing their activities of daily life.
