  • Objectives : To evaluate the effects of a strengthening exercise program on the physical activity, activities of daily living(ADL), social behavior and functional performance of the elderly in a home for the aged. Methods : We administered a survey questionnaire that consisted of questions to establish general characteristics, health habits and status, physical activity, ADL, and social behavior. Additionally, a physical fitness and functional performance examination was peformed on subjects who were 65 years old or older. Study subjects numbered 33 in the experimental group and 35 in the control group. For intervention, we used a strengthening exercise program of the upper and lower limbs for 12 weeks(5 times/week) using dumbbells and lead-packed weights. Results : After the strengthening exercise program, the scores of physical activity and social behavior were significantly higher than the control group and the before exercise measurements. Moreover, the variables of functional performance were significantly higher than in the control group or the before exercise records. Conclusion : These results Indicate that a strengthening exercise program can improve the score of physical activity, ADL and social behavior, as well as decrease the time(sec) of functional performance of the elderly in a home for the aged.

  • The Purpose of this study was to identify the process of change, decisional balance and self-efficacy corresponding to the stages of change in exercise behavior based on the Transtheoretical Model(TTM) in obese adolescents. A random sample of 517 obese adolescents was recruited in Pusan. The data were collected from June 15 to 30, 2004. The research instruments were Stages of Change for Exercise Behavior, Process of Change, Decisional Balance, and Self-Efficacy. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and ANOVA using SPSS WIN 10.0 program. The results of this study were as follows 1. The subjects were distributed in each stage of exercise behavior: There were 255 subjects($49.3\%$) in the contemplation stage, 131 subjects($25.3\%$) in the preparation stage, 52 subjects($10.1\%$) in the maintenance stage, 41 subjects($7.9\%$) in the action stage, and 38 subjects($7.4\%$) in the precontemplation stage. 2. Analysis of variance showed that cognitive process (F=13.57, p=.000), behavioral process(F=17.23, p=.000), decisional balance pros(F=11.95, p=.000), and self efficacy(F=12.52, p=.000) were significantly associated with the stages of exercise behavior change, but decisional balance cons(F=2.87, p=.023) was not significantly associated with the stages of exercise behavior change. This study can provide useful information for developing effective exercise behavior program considering obese adolescents' stages of change according t'.t the TTM.

  • We studied the effects of behavior modification and aerobic exercise on body weight, degree of obesity, % body fat, triceps skinfold thickness, blood pressure and eating behavior among overweight middle school girls. 15 girls participated in the behavior modification program by joining 60-90 minute group session weekly. The aerobic exercise program was given to 13 girls 3 times per week with 60 minutes each time. The data were obtained before treatment, after 4 and 8 weeks after treatment. In analyzing the data, repeated measures ANOVA were adopted. The results were as follows ; 1. For the changes of body weight between 2 groups, body weight of behavior modification groups decreased significantly than these of aerobic exercise group at 4 and 8 weeks after treatment, 2. For the changes of degree of obesity between 2 groups, there were no significant differences over time, 3. The analysis of change of % body fat did not reveal significant differences between 2 groups over time, 4. The changes of triceps skinfold thickness were significant differences between 2 groups over time, 5. For the changes of systolic blood pressure between 2 groups, there were significant differences over time. At 4 weeks after treatment, systolic blood pressure of behavior modification group decreased significantly than these of aerobic exercise group. 6. The changes of diastolic blood pressure were significant differences between 2 groups over time.

  • This study explored the eating attitudes, dieting habits, weight perception and exercise behavior of Korean women. Self-reported questionnaires were administered to 724 Korean college students. Compared to males, female students felt themselves overweight and dissatisfied with their body and desired to lose weight although both groups were within the range of the national standard. Female students dieted more, while males exercised more. Eighteen percent of females showed disturbed eating behavior. The score for disturbed eating behavior was highly related to weight perception in the female students. These results suggest that Korean college women have a high prevalence of eating disturbances without having actual weight problems. A majority of the women desired to lose weight which may be due to the misperception of their body weight and fatness. However, they did not adopt appropriate strategies such as doing regular exercise to reduce their body weight.

For this purpose, 275 out of 300 copies of survey aimed at students in four universities located in Gyeong-gi province were used. PAWS 18.0 program was used for analysis to present descriptive statistics. Principal component analysis and rotation of Max Berry were used among exploratory factor analysis to check factor extraction and internal consistency. Cronbach's alpha was used for checking reliability. Multiple regression analysis was used to clarify the relationship between enjoyment factor, class satisfaction, and exercise continuation behavior of cultural physical education. These are the following conclusions. First, instructional behavior, grade in physical education, environment, and exercise ability among the enjoyment factors in cultural physical education class have a significant effect on persistence of exercise. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The experimental group participated in the exercise program for 60 minutes per day, three times a week for 12 weeks. Data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: After the program, there were significant differences in perceived barriers to exercise, exercise self-efficacy, exercise social support, exercise behavior, physical fitness, perceived health status, and depression between two groups. However, no significant difference was observed in the perceived benefits to exercise between two groups. Conclusion: The exercise program of this study was useful to enhance exercise self-efficacy, exercise social support, exercise behavior, physical fitness, and perceived health status and to reduce the perceived barriers to exercise and depression of women of old-old age.
