BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Energy production and the rebuilding and repair of muscle tissue by physical activity require folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ as a cofactor. Thus, this study investigated the effects of regular moderate exercise training and durations of acute aerobic exercise on plasma folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ concentrations in moderate exercise trained rats. MATERIALS/METHODS: Fifty rats underwent non-exercise training (NT, n = 25) and regular exercise training (ET, n = 25) for 5 weeks. The ET group performed moderate exercise on a treadmill for 30 min/day, 5 days/week. At the end of week 5, each group was subdivided into 4 groups: non-exercise and 3 exercise groups. The non-exercise group (E0) was sacrificed without exercising and the 3 exercise groups were sacrificed immediately after exercising on a treadmill for 0.5 h (E0.5), 1 h (E1), and 2 h (E2). Blood samples were collected and plasma folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ were analyzed. RESULTS: After exercise training, plasma folate level was significantly lower and vitamin $B_{12}$ concentration was significantly higher in the ET group compared with the NT group (P < 0.05). No significant associations were observed between plasma folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ concentrations. In both the NT and ET groups, plasma folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ were not significantly changed by increasing duration of aerobic exercise. Plasma folate concentration of E0.5 was significantly lower in the ET group compared with that in the NT group. Significantly higher vitamin $B_{12}$ concentrations were observed in the E0 and E0.5 groups of the ET group compared to those of the NT group. CONCLUSION: Regular moderate exercise training decreased plasma folate and increased plasma vitamin $B_{12}$ levels. However, no significant changes in plasma folate and vitamin $B_{12}$ concentrations were observed by increasing duration of acute aerobic exercise.
This study was designed to find out the effects of aerobic exercise on lipid and Ca metabolism in seven healthy college women, aged 20 to 22 years. Metabolic studies were conducted before and after a 10-weeks exercise period, during which subjects participated in the planned aerobic dance program every day except Sunday. The initial mean time engaged in the exercise was 28 minutes and it was gradually increased up to 45 minutes around the middle point of the exercise period. During both of metabolic study periods, the subjects ate experimental diets which supplied about 120g of protein and 600mg of Ca daily and during the rest of the experimental period they ate their usual diets. The use of alcoholic beverages and drugs were prohibited. The results were summarized as follows. 1) The effect of exercise on lipid metabolism. (1) Mean body weight decreased significantly after exercise(p<0.01) and it did not show a significant decline in skinfold thickness and total body fat contents. (2) Serum total cholesterol level decreased significantly after exercise(p<0.05) and TG level also tended to be lower than that of pre-exercise period. Exercise did not exert any influence on the level of serum HDL-cholesterol in this study. (3) Exercise did not alter total lipid content in feces and apparent lipid absorption rate. 2) The effect of exercise on Ca and P metabolism. (1) After exercise, focal Ca excretion was slightly reduced, however, urinary Ca excretion was not significantly changed. In the results, a slight increase was shown in body Ca retention after exercise. (2) Exercise tended to increase urinary P excretion, but neither P balance nor fecal excretion was significantly changed after exercise. (3) Bone mineral content was not affected by exercise. In summary, aerobic exercise decreased total cholesterol and TG level in serum and tended to increase body Ca retention. With the results, it can be concluded that the additional physical activities beyond the normal daily life in college women might prevent some degenerative diseases-suchas atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.
This study was conducted to identify the effects of intake of beta-blocker and aerobic exercise on heart rate recovery (HRR) and exercise capacity after maximal exercise in acute coronary syndrome patients (ACS). Subjects were divided into 4 groups; Beta-blocker-Exercise group (n=10), Beta-blocker group (n=10), Exercise group (n=10), Control group (n=10). Symptom-limited grade exercise test were conducted on subjects pre- and post- 6 week study, to measure maximal heart rate, heart rate at 1 minute and 2 minutes at the recovery stage, maximal oxygen uptake and maximal exercise time. Study resulted in significant improvements in heart rate recovery for BB-Ex group ($17.40{\pm}5.58$ bpm to $26.10{\pm}6.66$ bpm), maximal oxygen uptake for BB-Ex group ($30.46{\pm}8.63$ to $36.33{\pm}8.10$) and Ex group ($29.04{\pm}4.93$ to $34.31{\pm}5.19$), and total exercise time for BB-Ex group ($906.30{\pm}158.57$ to $1018.50{\pm}151.21$), BB group ($805.70{\pm}182.94$ to $897.50{\pm}160.16$) and Ex group ($870.00{\pm}145.63$ to $961.90{\pm}107.29$). Therefore it showed the biggest improvement for heart rate recovery and exercise capacity in acute coronary syndrome patients when both Beta-blocker and aerobic exercise were in effect.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the effect of resistance exercise and balance exercise on proprioception and WOMAC index of patients with degenerative knee osteoarthritis. A total of 40 subjects participated in this study. The subjects were diagnosed with degenerative knee osteoarthritis and all were more than 60 years old. They were divided into three groups. Group I(n=8) was trained with resistance exercise, Group II(n=6) was trained with balance exercise and Group III(n=6) was trained with range of motion as a control. The results of this study were as follows. It was significantly indicated that the resistance exercise group and balance exercise group elicited error-reduction on proprioception goal-angle (p<.05). There was a statistically significant difference on proprioception between resistance exercise group and control(range of motion) group. There was a statistically significant reduction on WOMAC index between resistance exercise group and balance exercise group (p<.05) and on the WOMAC index between resistance exercise group and range of motion group(p<.05). In conclusion, resistance exercise and balance exercise are effective on degenerative knee osteoarthritis and resistance exercise is the most effective for improving proprioception and WOMAC index. More research on the intervention according to the degree of degenerative knee osteoarthritis is needed.

Purpose: This study examined the effects of pre-eccentric exercise to the quadriceps for the prevention of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and recovery of muscular function, depending on the training intensities. Methods: Subjects were divided into one of three groups that control group, a low intensity eccentric exercise group (LIEE group) and a high intensity eccentric exercise group (HIEE group). Subjects who underwent pre-eccentric exercise undertook exercise at an intensity of 25% and 75% of maximal voluntary contractions, respectively. After undertaking pre-eccentric exercise for eight weeks, eccentric exercise was applied again to induce DOMS. Measurements were conducted to examine pain and muscular function changes before, immediately after, after the induction of DOMS, and at the first, third, fifth and seventh days after the induction of DOMS. Results: Subjects who underwent pre-eccentric exercise showed a significant difference from the control group for the changes in the visual analogue scale (VAS) pain threshold, pressure pain threshold and muscle thickness by isometric contraction from measuring DOMS, and in particular, pain threshold by isometric contraction had remarkable effect in the LIEE group of subjects. For the change of the root mean square values using mechanomyography (MMG) as the measurement of muscular function recovery, subjects who had undertaken pre-eccentric exercise group showed a significant difference as compared to the control group. Conclusion: Pre-eccentric exercise was very effective in preventing and recovering delayed onset muscle soreness and was helpful to prevent and recover from decreased muscular function. The difference based on the intensity of exercise was not great, but it was more effective in the low intensity eccentric exercise group of subjects. Therefore, it can be considered that pre-eccentric exercise has a high application value as a physical therapy intervention for prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries.
This study was performed to explore the effects of aqua-exercise program on back pain, flexibility. time of exercise and self-efficacy in the women with chronic back pain. The design of this study was a equivalent pre-post test experiment. The subjects consisted of 31 women living in seoul. They underwent tests of back pain. flexibility. time of exercise and self-efficacy as baseline data before aqua-exercise program. The aquatic exercise was based on the Back hab and was consists of 60minutes session, 2 times a week for 5 weeks. Data were analyzed with percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and pearson correlation coefficient using SAS program. The results were as follows. 1. The back pain has significantly decreased after aqua-exercise program. 2. The dorsal flexibility has significantly increased after aqua-exercise program. 3. The time of exercise has significantly increased after aqua-exercise program. 3. The Self-efficacy has significantly increased after aqua-exercise program. The findings showed the aqua-exercise program could be effective in decreasing the back pain and effective in increasing the flexibility, time of exercise and self-efficacy. It can be suggested the aqua-exercise is effective in the health promotion of the women with chronic back pain.
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the physical exercise needs, exercise commitment and exercise addiction based on the degree of participation by health club members and furthermore to verify the suitability of the structural model of variables based on these relationships. The subjects for this study include adults aged over 20 years old who exercised for over 3 months in 2014 Random sampling of data from subjects at their convenient time and place known as the convenience sampling method was used to analyze a total of 151 surveys. The collected data was statistically processed using SPSS 18.0. The results of the analysis reached the following conclusions. Firstly, depending on the degree of participation of the health club member, a significant variation was perceived between physical exercise needs, exercise commitment and addiction. Secondly, physical exercise needs had a significant influence on exercise commitment. Thirdly, physical exercise needs had a significant influence on exercise addiction. Finally, exercise commitment had a significant influence on exercise addiction.
The purpose of this study was to analyze relations among the stages of exercise change, exercise self-schema, and temptation of quitting exercise to figure out changes to the exercise behavior according to a psychological process. For this purpose, the study used total 297 questionnaires from adults using a public sports center. Collected data was treated with the SPSS 18.0 program, being put to the test through exploratory factor analysis, MANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and discriminant analysis. The findings were as follows: first, there were differences in exercise self-schema according to the stages of exercise change; second, there were differences in the temptation of quitting exercise between coaches and burnout according to the stages of exercise change; third, behavioral self-schema and burnout were major factors to distinguish the stages of exercise change; and finally, exercise self-schema had negative effects on burnout, and cognitive-emotional self-schema had negative effects on affect.

Background: This study compared the effects of trunk stabilization exercise and hip joint exercises on the range of motion of the lumbar spine, pain severity, and severity of disability in patients with chronic lower back pain. Methods: A total of 30 participants were enrolled and divided into group 1 (n=10), group 2 (n=10), and group 3 (n=10) were performed by each group thrice a week for a total of 8 weeks. Group 1 performed warm-up exercise (15 min), trunk stabilization exercise (25 min), finish-up exercise (15mins). Group 2 performed warm-up exercise (15 min), hip exercise (25 mins, finish-up exercise (15mins). Group 3 warm-up exercise (15 min), trunk stabilization and hip exercise (25 min), Finish-up exercise (15 min). Participants were assessed for the range of motion of the lumbar spine, pain severity (visual analog scale score; VAS), and severity of disability (Oswestry disability index score; ODI) before and after the interventions. Results: All three groups showed a significant increase in the range of motion of the lumbar spine, but there was no significant difference among the groups. Moreover, the severity of pain and ODI were significantly decreased in all groups; however, the intergroup differences were non-significant. Conclusion: The results from this study confirmed the effectiveness of trunk stabilization and hip joint exercise in improving the lumbar range of motion, pain severity, and chronic lower back pain in patients. Thus, trunk and pelvic stabilization exercises and hip joint exercise can be used as clinical practices to treat and prevent chronic lower back pain.

Background: In this study, the abductor hallucis activity and medial longitudinal arch angle were compared by performing four exercises, namely the short foot exercise, the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension, the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 1kt on the sole, and the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 2kg on the sole. Methods: Four short foot exercises as described above were performed by 20 healthy adult males and females. The abductor hallucis activity and medial longitudinal arch angle were measured and analyzed by surface electromyography and the Kinovea software program. Results: The short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension, short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 1kg on the sole, and the short foot exercise with 2nd~5th toe extension with a load of 2kg on the sole showed significantly higher abductor hallucis activity than the short foot exercise alone. Among these, the short foot exercise with the 2nd~5th toe extension was the most effective. All exercises showed a significantly decreased medial longitudinal arch angle post-exercise than pre-exercise, and the short foot exercise with the 2nd~5th toe extension showed a significantly decreased medial longitudinal arch angle compared to the other three exercises. Conclusion: It is believed that the short foot exercise with the 2nd~5th toe extension can be proposed as an effective exercise that can replace the short foot exercise alone.
