Excessive vibration in rotating machinery is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing such difficulties as fatigue of machinery components and failure of supporting bearings. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuated vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to provide vibration control perform beyond that provided by their passive counters. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress rotating machinery displacements. In cases where vibration results in bearing failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic bearing loads which would be even more harmful to bearings). This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in rotating machinery. One method minimizes shaft displacements while the other minimizes dynamic bearing reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical rotating machinery system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase bearing loads, while bearing load minimization, on the other hand, decreases bearing loads.
Recently, hearing loss patients have been increasing to excessive use of various multimedia devices. One of the hearing rehabilitation systems, bone conduction hearing aid can be used to conductive deafness patients efficiently. However, the conventional bone conduction hearing systems has some problems such as skin diseases, repulsion of patients, and vibration power reduction by skin damping. In this paper, to overcome the conventional problems, we proposed power improvement method by curved beam diaphragm. The proposed method is skin attachment system which is non-implantable, and then the power of transducer is improved by the proposed method. In order to improve the vibration power of diaphragm, variable that has correlation with displacement are extracted, the diaphragm designed by extracted variable. To verify efficient of the proposed method, experiment conducted by finite element analysis. As a result of, the proposed method confirmed improved power to compare with the conventional method and proposed method.
Introduction : Patients with temporomandibular disorder may have various ear-related symptoms. If an excessive load is applied to the ear area due to the skeletal shape of the mandibular condyle or malposition of the disc, an auditory problems may occur. Case report : The patient was referred to our clinic due to the suspicion of temporomandibular disorder from the local otorhinolaryngology clinic. A few days ago, his right ear could not be heard. MRI showed that the left TMJ disc was anterior displacement with reduction, the right TMJ disc was anteromedial displacement without reduction. Also Right mandibular condyle showed sclerotic bone change, subchondral cyst and was compressing the frontal wall of the ear on MRI view. Right TMJ arthroplasty was done under the diagnosis of right TMJ osteoarthritis and osteochondroma. Postoperative intermaxillary fixation was done with SAS screw and elastics for 2 weeks. One month after the operation, hearing and TMJ discomfort were recovered without any complications. Conclusions As seen in this case, hearing loss due to benign tumor-like lesions of the temporomandibular joint should be treated surgically to restore the TMJ function and hearing.
In near-fault earthquake prone areas, the velocity pulse-like seismic waves often results in excessive horizontal displacement for structures, which may result in severe structural failure during large or near-fault earthquakes. The recently developed isolator-gap damper (IGD) systems provide a solution for the large horizontal displacement of long period base-isolated structures. However, the hysteresis characteristics of the IGD system are significantly different from the traditional hysteretic behavior. At present, the hysteretic behavior is difficult to be reflected in the structural analysis and performance evaluation especially under random earthquake excitations for lacking of effective analysis models which prevent the application of this kind of IGD system. In this paper, we propose a mathematical hysteretic model for the IGD system that presents its nonlinear hysteretic characteristics. The equivalent linearization is conducted on this nonlinear model, which requires the variances of the IGD responses. The covariance matrix for the responses of the structure and the IGD system is obtained for random earthquake excitations represented by the Kanai-Tajimi spectrum by solving the Lyapunov equation. The responses obtained by the equivalent linearization are verified in comparison with the nonlinear responses by the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) analysis for random earthquake excitations.
The stiffness evaluation of cracked base metal is of great guidance to fatigue crack reinforcement. By carrying out fatigue tests and numerical simulation of typical cracking details in steel box girder, the strain-degradation law of cracked base metal was analyzed and the relationship between base metal stress and its displacement (stiffness) was explored. The feasibility of evaluating the stress of cracked base metal based on the stress field at the crack tip was verified. The results demonstrate that the stiffness of cracked base metal shows the fast-to-slow degradation trend with fatigue cracking and the base metal at 50mm or more behind the crack tip basically lose its bearing capacity. Drilling will further accelerate stiffness degradation with the increase of hole diameters. The base metal stress has a negative linear relation with its displacement (stiffness), The stress of cracked base metal is also related to stress intensity factor and its relative position (distance, included angle) to the crack tip, through which the local stiffness can be effectively evaluated. Since the stiffness is not uniformly distributed along the cracked base metal, the reinforcement patch is suggested to be designed according to the stiffness to avoid excessive reinforcement for the areas incompletely unloaded.

Ratcheting is the cyclic buildup of inelastic strain on a structure resulting from a combination of primary and secondary cyclic stress. It can lead to excessive plastic deformation, incremental collapse, or fatigue. Ratcheting has been numerically investigated on a cantilever beam, considering the current study's primary and secondary bending loads. In addition, the effect of input frequency on the onset of ratcheting has been investigated. The non-linear dynamic elastic-plastic approach has been utilized. Analogous to Yamashita's bending-bending ratchet diagram, a non-dimensional ratchet diagram with a frequency effect is proposed. The result presents that the secondary stress values fall sequentially with the increase of primary stress values. Moreover, a displacement amplification factor graph is also established to explain the effect of frequency on ratchet occurrence conditions. In terms of frequency effect, it has been observed that the lower frequency (0.25 times the natural frequency) was more detrimental for ratchet occurrence conditions than the higher frequency (2 times the natural frequency) due to the effect of dynamic displacement. Finally, the effect of material modeling of ratcheting behavior on a beam is shown using different hardening coefficients of kinematic hardening material modeling.
It is reported that factors affecting the behavior of reinforced earth retaining walls built on soft ground are not only basic physical properties but also the increase of load by the reinforced earth retaining walls, consolidation period, pore water pressure, etc. This study analyzed the behavior of reinforced earth retaining walls and soft ground using SAGE CRISP, a ground analysis program. First, we examined the effect of the replacement method, which was to prevent the excessive displacement of reinforced earth retaining walls, in improving the behavior of the walls. Second, we compared and analyzed how the behavior of ground is affected by the vertical interval of stiffeners on the back of reinforced earth retaining walls after the application of the replacement method. Lastly, we proposed the optimal replacement width and depth in the application of the replacement method. The results of this study proved that the replacement method is considerably effective in improving the behavior of reinforced earth retaining walls. In addition, the vertical interval of stiffeners on the back of reinforced earth retaining walls appeared effective in improving the horizontal displacement of the top of retaining walls but not much effective in improving the vertical displacement of the back of retaining walls. In addition, improvement in horizontal-vertical displacement resulting from the increase in replacement width was not significant and this suggests that the increase of replacement width is not necessary. With regard to an adequate replacement depth, we proposed the ratio of replacement depth to the height of retaining walls(D/H) according to the ratio of the thickness of the soft layer to the height of retaining walls(H/T).

Some elevated water tanks have failed due to torsional vibrations in past earthquakes. The overall axisymmetric structural geometry and mass distribution of such structures may leave only a small accidental eccentricity between centre of stiffness and centre of mass. Such a small accidental eccentricity is not expected to cause a torsional failure. This paper studies the possibility of amplified torsional behaviour of elevated water tanks due to such small accidental eccentricity in the elastic as well as inelastic range; using two simple idealized systems with two coupled lateral-torsional degrees of freedom. The systems are capable of retaining the characteristics of two extreme categories of water tanks namely, a) tanks on staging with less number of columns and panels and b) tanks on staging with large number of columns and panels. The study shows that the presence of a small eccentricity may lead to large displacement of the staging edge in the elastic range, if the torsional-to-lateral time period ratio $({\tau})$ of the elevated tanks lies within a critical range of 0.7< ${\tau}$ <1.25. Inelastic behaviour study reveals that such excessive displacement in some of the reinforced concrete staging elements may cause unsymmetric yielding. This may lead to progressive strength deterioration through successive yielding in same elements under cyclic loading during earthquakes. Such localized strength drop progressively develop large strength eccentricity resulting in large localized inelastic displacement and ductility demand, leading to failure. So, elevated water tanks should have ${\tau}$ outside the said critical range to avoid amplified torsional response. The tanks supported on staging with less number of columns and panels are found to have greater torsional vulnerability. Tanks located near faults seem to have torsional vulnerability for large ${\tau}$.
This paper describes reinforcement method of reinforced earth wall near the abutment. The excessive displacement of a case affected by reduction of bearing capacity due to macro-environment condition like a coast. That is, the front displacement of reinforced earth wall has been happening continuously due to strength reduction of foundation ground. The micro pile is applied to reinforcement method, in order to secure a bearing capacity and global slope stability of reinforced earth wall. The results of numerical analysis confirmed that reinforcement method based on micro pile can secure a stability of structure, while the reconstruction of reinforced earth wall is impossible by construction and macro-environment condition.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of force and moment produced by Nickel-titanium wires of different sizes at activation and deactivation according to differing vertical bracket displacement. Methods: Superelastic NiTi wires of 3 different sizes (0.014", 0.016", and 0.016" ${\times}$ 0.022") were tied with elastomeric or 0.009-inch stainless steel ligations in a twin-bracket, 0.018-inch slot. A testing machine recorded the effects of simulated activation of 5 distances from 1 to 5 mm and deactivation of 5 distances from 4 to 0 mm, in increments of 1 mm. Results: Frictional force increased the wire stiffness during loading. Ligation of 0.014-inch NiTi wire with O-ring resulted in a significant increase in the stiffness. On application of orthodontic force for 5 mm of vertical displacement of teeth, the effective displacement in the case of the 0.014", 0.016", and 0.016" ${\times}$ 0.022" NiTi wires was 2 mm, 3 mm, and 4 mm, respectively. Conclusions: Our results showed that movement of teeth with large vertical displacement was ineffective because of excessive friction. This finding might contribute to the understanding of the force system required for effective teeth movement and thereby facilitate the application of the appropriate light wire for leveling and alignment.
