  • We study a statistical analysis about the fifth wave data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey based on linear regression models with measurement errors. The data is obtained from a national population-based complex survey. To demonstrate the availability of measurement error models, two results between the general linear regression model and measurement error model are compared based on the model selection criteria which are Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion. For our study, we use the simulation extrapolation algorithm for measurement error model and the jackknife method for the estimation of standard errors.

  • Ovarian cancer patients need a surveillance program for the detection of tumor progression after completion of treatment. The methods generally consist of history taking, physical examination, tumor marker monitoring and imaging. However, the details of recurrence detection with each method are not well defined. To clarify this issue, ovarian cancer patients who achieved complete or partial responses and developed tumor progression at the follow up time between January 2004 and December 2010 in University Hospital Chiang Mai, Thailand, were reviewed. Clinical data, CA 125 level and imaging results at the tumor progression time were recorded and analyzed. There were 144 ovarian cancer patients meeting the inclusion criteria with the mean age of 51 years and 62.5% of them were in an advanced stage. Complete response was achieved in 89 patients (61.8%) after primary treatment. The median progression free survival and overall survival were 15.5 months and 37.5 months, respectively. Abnormal symptoms presented in 49.3% of the studied patients and 59.7% developed physical examination abnormalities. In addition, CA 125 was elevated in 89.6% while in 74.3% of tumor progression was identified by CT-scan. Short treatment time period and a high level of CA 125 were significant independent prognostic factors in these patients. In conclusion, careful history taking, physical examination and monitoring of CA 125 levels are important methods for tumor progression detection in a surveillance program for epithelial ovarian cancer patients.

  • This study was performed in order to evaluate the accuracy and the usefulness of the cytology of crush preparation in central nervous system (CNS) lesions. Forty four intraoperative biopsies were performed at the time of craniotomy including 34 benign and 10 malignant lesions. Crush preparations were prepared from tiny tissue fragments of craniotomy products. All cases were stained with toluidine blue. Intraoperative diagnoses made on cytologic examination were compared with the final paraffin section diagnoses. Comparison between the results of the cytologic and histologic findings revealed an overall diagnostic accuracy of 88.6%. This study attests to the diagnostic accuracy of cytologic examination in CNS lesions. The detailed cytologic features are described and important criteria for the cytodiagnosis of CNS lesions are discussed. This review leads us to think that cytologic examination by crush preparation in CNS lesions is considered as a simple, safe and highly diagnostically accurate method.

  • This study aims to examine the acoustic characteristics of Korean sibilant, especially aspiration in Korean fricatives (plain: /s/, fortis: /s'/) and affricates (aspirated: /$ts^h$/, lenis: /ts/, and fortis: /ts'/). Duration values (closure duration, frication duration, aspiration duration), center of gravity (COG) (of the total duration, of the two portions, in 10 ms), H1-H2 values (at the vowel onset) were examined in order to investigate the phonetic feature of aspiration in frication noise. This study further discusses how to define criteria for identifying aspiration in sibilant sounds by adopting 3 visual criteria for assessing aspiration. This visually-designated aspiration onset points are further matched with the COG decline points in 10 ms windows. The result shows that all the non-fortis sounds (/s/, /$ts^h$/, /ts/) contain aspiration, causing similar values of COG and H1-H2.

  • Our Study aims to examine, from a critical perspective, recent approaches to the definition of services, Studies that deal with the question of how to characterize services offer three types of response. The first approach developed by classical economists proposes to use technical criteria (immateriality, non-separability between consumption and production, non-storage, heterogeneity) as foundation for a specific definition of services. The second, which is today most widely cited definition, that of Peter Hill proposes an institutional or a relation-oriented definition which emphasizes service triangle. Finally, the work of Gadrey, which investigates the impact of new technologies on service activities, offers a new general definition of services that is compatible with the existence of several demand rationales.

  • Piriformis syndrome is a common differential diagnosis related to sciatica. The following review provides a concise synopsis of the diagnosis, management, history, and alternatives to diagnosis of piriformis syndrome. A search of the literature for research articles related to piriformis syndrome and associated differential diagnosis of sciatica was conducted. A thorough review of the included articles found that the condition known as piriformis syndrome is over-diagnosed and that potential anatomic and biomechanical variations originating in the pelvic region might be related to the complaint of sciatica. The criteria for diagnosis are based on findings from both physical examination and radio imaging. Piriformis syndrome resembles a variety of clinical conditions; therefore, conduct of future studies should include development of a validated method for evaluation as well as clinical criteria for diagnosis of piriformis syndrome.

  • In recent years, demand for examination of bone mineral density (BMD) is increasing in Korea according aging society. Therefore, it is required to develop an efficient management program that can increase the safety and reliability of Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) that can be applied to the criteria of the World Health Organization. It is necessary to develop a management program that can design a program to improve the accuracy and precision of the results of the analysis and to improve the accuracy of diagnosis of osteoporosis by development a high quality DXA report. It is recommended to prepare the examination manuals and to establish procedures of standard operating including the program to prevent the pitfalls during the examination, the compatibility evaluation of the examination data, and the contents of the radiation safety. In addition, relevant regulations on the production of high-quality DXA reports are required and government and related agencies should introduce individual and facility recognition programs through DXA measurement and education programs and training. It is considered that efforts should be made to prepare high quality DXA report by guidelines on all aspects of BMD for preparation about aging society.

  • Background: Skin self-examination (SSE) may facilitate early diagnosis of melanoma at a potentially curable stage. Little data are available concerning the SSE frequency and knowledge about the symptoms of melanoma in non-patient populations. The aim of our study was to assess the performance of skin self-examination, recognition of potential melanoma symptoms as well as behavior related to sun exposure among web users in Poland. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among readers of a scientific portal. Invited respondents were asked to complete an online questionnaire. Finally, statistical analysis was conducted on 4,919 surveys towards potential clinical signs of melanoma and SSE performance. Results: Approximately 60% of respondents had ever performed SSE in their life. Only 18.4 % declared performance on a regular, monthly, basis. Factors promoting this activity were established to be bigger place of residence, higher education and sensitive skin phototype, higher level of knowledge concerning melanoma, safe tanning rules and, especially, past surgical excision of naevi. Declared longer use of tanning beds was linked to understanding better the importance of clinical features of melanoma. Awareness of hazardous behavior during sunbathing is associated with the attempts to change them. Conclusions: Regular SSE is not a common practice, whilst the knowledge about the clinical features of melanoma is varied. Therefore, constant pressure should be put on promotion of regular skin self-examination and teaching its proper techniques, including familiarity with the ABCD (asymmetry; border; color; diameter) rule and its extension of "EFG" (elevated, firm, progressive growth) criteria.
