  • The purpose of this study was to develop instructional programs aimed at enhancing middle school students' understanding of evolutionary concepts using a step-by-step writing strategies and an applicable evaluation rubric for evolutionary concepts. To achieve this, a step-by-step writing instructional model (PEECE) was devised as a method for scientific writing, and essential evolutionary core concepts were selected considering the middle school curriculum's coverage of biological evolution. Six evolutionary core concepts-variation, inheritance of variation, differential survival and reproduction, microevolution, and macroevolution-were chosen, with each serving as the focus of a lesson in a four-lesson program following the PEECE lesson model. The program was implemented with 16 students in a co-curricular middle school class. Pre- and post-lesson evolutionary concept checklists were administered to diagnose and compare the level of evolutionary concept understanding. Additionally, students' writing materials for each evolutionary core concept were collected, scored using an evolutionary concept evaluation rubric, and thoroughly analyzed. The results indicated that the step-by-step writing strategy effectively enhanced understanding of the six evolutionary core concepts and reduced cognitive biases and misconceptions about evolution. Contrasted with the optional evolution concept test, the descriptive writing activity provided a more tangible insight into students' scientific concepts, biases, and misconceptions, facilitating teachers' assessment of understanding and feedback provision. Moreover, the jointly developed evaluation rubric offered specific scoring criteria, enabling objective assessment without subjective influence, allowing analysis and scoring of students' writing materials across evaluation areas for collecting fundamental data.

  • The purpose of this study is to review the literatures on the evolutionary perspective on education and to draw the educational implications for science education. This study addresses on several topics as follows: our common misunderstandings about the evolutionary perspective on education; children's inherent knowledge and abilities, their learning about the evolutionarily novel knowledge and abilities in school, their difficulties in academic learning, and the instructional strategies to cope with the difficulties; and the implications for science education from the evolutionary perspective. The evolutionary perspective on education has provided new insights how culturally important information is transmitted across generations in the past hunting-gathering societies and the modern societies, and how children's inherent motivational and behavioral dispositions affect their academic learning. In addition, the new perspective on education can be used to generate empirical hypotheses about children's science learning, and with the further research, could lead to useful implications and ultimately improve educational outcomes.

  • In this study, optimization design technique for control of solid-fluid coupled force (sloshing) using evolutionary method is suggested. Artificial neural networks(ANN) and genetic algorithm(GA) is employed as evolutionary optimization method. The ANN is used to analysis of the sloshing and the genetic algorithm is adopted as an optimization algorithm. In the creation of ANN learning data, the design of experiments is adopted to higher performance of the ANN learning using minimum learning data and ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) numerical method is used to obtain the sloshing analysis results. The proposed optimization technique is applied to the minimization of sloshing of the water in the tank lorry with baffles under 2 second lane change.

  • Seven transmembrane receptors (7TMRs), also known as G protein-coupled receptors, are popular targets of drug development, particularly 7TMR systems that are activated by peptide ligands. Although many pharmaceutical drugs have been discovered via conventional bulk analysis techniques the increasing availability of structural and evolutionary data are facilitating change to rational, targeted drug design. This article discusses the appeal of neuropeptide-7TMR systems as drug targets and provides an overview of concepts in the evolution of vertebrate genomes and gene families. Subsequently, methods that use evolutionary concepts and comparative analysis techniques to aid in gene discovery, gene function identification, and novel drug design are provided along with case study examples.

  • The oscillation of the fluid caused by external forces is call ed sloshing, which occurs in moving vehicles with contained liquid masses, such as trucks, railroad cars, aircraft, and liquid rocket. This sloshing effect could be a severe problem in vehicle stability and control. In this study, the optimization design technique for reduction of the sloshing using evolutionary method is suggested. Two evolutionary methods are employed, respectively the artificial neural network(ANN) and genetic algorithm. An artificial neural network is used for the analysis of sloshing and genetic algorithm is adopted as optimization algorithm. As a result of optimization design, the optimized size and location of the baffle is presented

  • The evolutionary structural optimization(ESO) method has been under continuous development since 1992. The bidirectional evolutionary structural optimization(BESO) method is made of additive and removal procedure. The BESO method is very useful to search the global optimum and to reduce the computational time. This paper presents the ranked bidirectional evolutionary structural optimization(R-BESO) method which adds elements based on a rank, and the performance indicator which can estimate a fully stressed model. The R-BESO method can obtain the optimum design using less iteration number than iteration number of the BESO.

  • In this study in order to confirm the algorithms that are suggested from paper (I) as the experimental result, as the applied results of the hydraulic servo system are very strong a non-linearity of the fluid in the computer simulation, the real-time adaptive learning control algorithms is validated. The evolutionary strategy has characteristics that are automatically. adjusted in search regions with natural competition among many individuals. The error that is generated from the dynamic system is applied to the mutation equation. Competitive individuals are reduced with automatic adjustments of the search region in accord with the error. In this paper, the individual parents and offspring can be reduced in order to apply evolutionary algorithms in real-time as the description of the paper (I). The possibility of a new approaching algorithm that is suggested from the computer simulation of the paper (I) would be proved as the verification of a real-time test and the consideration its influence from the actual experiment.

  • Recent advancement in data gathering technique improves the capability of information collecting, thus allowing the learning process between gathered data patterns and application sub-tasks. A pattern can be associated with multiple labels, demanding multi-label learning capability, resulting in significant attention to multi-label feature selection since it can improve multi-label learning accuracy. However, existing evolutionary multi-label feature selection methods suffer from ineffective search process. In this study, we propose a evolutionary search process for the task of multi-label feature selection problem. The proposed method creates large set of offspring or new feature subsets and then retains the most promising feature subset. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can identify feature subsets giving good multi-label classification accuracy much faster than conventional methods.

  • In vitro evolution is a powerful technique for the engineering of yeast strains to study cellular mechanisms associated with evolutionary adaptation; strains with desirable traits for industrial processes can also be generated. There are two distinct approaches to generate evolved strains in vitro: the sequential transfer of cells in the stationary phase into fresh medium or the continuous growth of cells in a chemostat bioreactor via the constant supply of fresh medium. In culture, evolutionary forces drive diverse adaptive mechanisms within the cell to overcome environmental or intracellular stressors. Especially, this engineering strategy has expanded to the field of human cell lines; the understanding of such adaptive mechanisms provides promising targets for the treatment of human genetic diseases and cancer. Therefore, this technology has the potential to generate numerous industrial, medical, and academic applications.
