  • In this paper, an optimal design method to have a good performance is researched. The parameters which are senstive to the performance are examined and determined by using evolutionary computations and commercial CAD program to have a good performance. Design method simulated is compared with conventional procedure.

  • We introduce a series of studies on turbulent skin friction drag reduction in wall-turbulence. First, an identity equation relating the skin friction drag and the Reynolds shear stress (the FIK identity) is introduced. Based on the implication of the FIK identity, a new analytical suboptimal feedback control law requiring the streamwise wall-shear stress only is introduced and direct numerical simulation (DNS) results of turbulent pipe flow with that control is reported. We also introduce DNS of an anisotropic compliant surface and parameter optimization using an evolutionary optimization technique.

  • In this paper, we propose a new neural network based on the DNA coding method. The initial population of the structure information and the weights for the neural network is generated, and then the descendants are chose with the Elitist selection by the genetic algorithm. The evolutionary technique and the suitable fitness measure are used to find a neural network with the fractal number of layers. which represents a good approximation to the given function.

  • Wheel impact due to the joint discontinuity is a major source of uncomfortable vibration in the railway vehicles. Since the impact signal is measured using sensors attached to the bogie and its energy content is small compared to the other vibrations from the machineries such as motors and gear systems, the seperation of the impact signal is generally difficult. In this study a technique using an evolutionary spectrum is proposed in order to estimate the impact signal due to the rail joint discontinuity.

A pilot study on the formation and evolution of the Intracluster light: Preliminary results of the Coma cluster

  • Galaxy clusters are the most massive gravitationally bound systems and thus probably the most recent objects to form. One of promising routes to understand the assembly history of galaxy clusters is to measure observable quantities of components in clusters that are sensitive to the evolutionary state of the cluster. Recent deep observations on the nearby clusters show distinct diffuse intracluster light (ICL), that the light from stars are not bound any individual cluster galaxy, however until now this component has not been well studied due to its faint nature, with typical brightness of ~100 times fainter than the sky background. As shown in galaxy cluster simulation studies, the ICL abundance increases during various dynamical exchanges of galaxies such as the disruption of dwarf galaxies, major mergers between galaxies and the tidal stripping of galaxies. Thus, the ICL is an effective tool to measure the evolutionary stage of galaxy clusters. Moreover, the investigation of the ICL evolution mechanism will allow us understand the galaxy evolution process therein. In this pilot study, we target the Coma cluster, where the existing ICL studies are limited only in the central region. With large and uniform deep optical images from the Subaru telescope, available only recently (Okabe et al. 2014), we are developing a robust ICL measurement technique, extracting the ICL surface brightness and color profiles, which will allow us to study the origin of the ICL and its connection to the evolutionary history of the Coma cluster. For the next phase, we plan to utilize the plenty of spectroscopy data from the MMT telescope to compare ICL properties with the star formation history of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCG), and discuss the ICL formation mechanism of the Coma cluster by comparing the distribution of cluster galaxies with the distribution of diffuse light inside the Coma cluster.

  • 최근 들어 확률 분포를 개체군으로부터 추정하여 보다 효율적으로 최적화를 해결하려는 연구가 진행되고 있다. 특히 복잡한 문제의 해결을 위해서 혼합 분포가 사용되고 있다. 그러나 이 경우 몇 개의 성분으로 혼합 분포를 나타낼 것인가를 결정하기 어려운 문제가 있으며, 각 분포에 의하여 표현되는 이전 세대의 우수한 부분 해들을 잘 결합하지 못하는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 변분 베이지안 혼합 인자 분석(variational Bayesian mixtures of factor analyzers) 기법을 사용한 개체군의 분포 추정을 통해 실수 공간에서의 최적화 문제를 해결하는 방법을 제안한다. 이 기법은 혼합 분포의 개수 추정을 자동화하며, 잠재 변수(latent variable)를 사용하여 각 분포가 표현하는 세부 개체군 내에 포함된 부분 해들의 혼합을 효율적으로 수행할 수 있다. 잘 알려진 함수 최적화 문제들에 대해 다른 분포 추정 진화 알고리즘과 비교하여 제안하는 방법의 우수성을 검증하였다. 또한 시스템 생물학에서 다루고 있는 생화학 네트워크의 동적 모델링을 위한 매개변수 추정도 성공적으로 수행하였다.

Application of portable digital radiography for dental investigations of ancient Egyptian mummies during archaeological excavations: Evaluation and discussion of the advantages and limitations of different approaches and projections

  • Purpose: In the age of X-ray computed tomography (CT) and digital volume tomography (DVT), with their outstanding post-processing capabilities, indications for planar radiography for the study of the dentition of ancient Egyptian mummies may easily be overlooked. In this article, the advantages and limitations of different approaches and projections are discussed for planar oral and maxillofacial radiography using portable digital X-ray equipment during archaeological excavations. Furthermore, recommendations are provided regarding projections and sample positioning in this context. Materials and Methods: A total of 55 specimens, including 19 skeletonized mandibles, 14 skeletonized skulls, 18 separate mummified heads, and 4 partially preserved mummies were imaged using portable digital X-ray equipment in the course of archaeological excavations led by the University of Basel in the Valley of the Kings between 2009 and 2012. Images were evaluated by 2 authors with regard to the visibility of diagnostically relevant dental structures using a 4-point grading system(Likert scale). Results: Overall, the visibility of diagnostically relevant dental structures was rated highest by both authors on X-ray images acquired using a dental detector. The tube-shift technique in the lateral projections of mandibular dentition achieved the second-best rating, and lateral projections achieved the third-best rating. Conclusion: Conventional planar digital X-ray imaging, due to its ubiquity, remains an excellent method-and often the only practicable one-for examining the skulls and teeth of ancient Egyptian mummies under field conditions. Radiographic images of excellent diagnostic quality can be obtained, if an appropriate methodology regarding the selected projections and sample placement is followed.

소행성 탐사선의 발사시기 산출 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Method of Calculating the Launch Period of the Asteroid Exploration Mission)

  • 지구접근 소행성을 목적지로 하는 우주탐사선의 발사 시기를 결정하는 방법에 대하여 기본적인 연구를 수행하였다. 향후, 지구 궤도에 접근하는 소행성을 대상으로 하는 탐사선 임무가 국내에서 진행될 경우에 발사시기를 결정하기 위해서는 전역최적화(global optimization)기법을 적용하여 적절한 해를 구하여야 한다. 이를 위해서는 먼저 각 소행성들의 정확한 궤도 정보가 필요하고. 지구의 공전궤도 정보, 탐사선의 주엔진 성능 정보, 중력보조 기동의 횟수, 최대 비행시간 제한 등의 사전 시나리오가 논의되어야 한다. 또한 최적화의 기준이 우선 결정되어야 한다. 본 논고에서는 이러한 전제 조건과 정보를 바탕으로 PyKEP, EMTG(Evolutionary Mission Trajectory Generator) 등의 오픈소스 경로탐색 프로그램을 사용하여 소행성 탐사선의 발사 시기를 찾는 방안을 연구하였다.
