  • We examine semantic properties of Korean plural expressions and how they are related to genericity and definiteness. First of all, Korean plural expressions provide a strong evidence for the plurality theory which discerns between the two sorts of plural individuals such as sum and group. Sum and group are clearly distinguished by morphological markers in Korean i.e., 'tul-plurals and ${\phi}$-plurals correspond to sum and group interpretations respectively. Second, the treatment of Korean bare singulars(=${\phi}$-plurals) as group accounts for why Korean generic NPs prefer bare singulars to bare plurals. Generic NPs refer to kind, and kind is a special group derived from supremum, therefore both generic NPs and bare singulars refer to group, and generic NPs are realized as bare singulars rather than bare plurals in Korean. Finally, in Korean, plurality and definiteness have little effect on each other although some connection between them has often been reported in the literature.

  • By taking a bottom-up "library in the life of the user" perspective rather than a top-down "user in the life of the library" perspective, this paper uses anecdotal evidence from the past and near present to examine the multiple roles the U.S. public library plays and has played as public space in the everyday lives of its patrons. By harnessing "public sphere" theory discussed in Jurgen Habermas's THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC SPHERE (1989) and by the examining the rich literatures on civic life and institutions that have evolved from it, the author argues that Library and Information Studies discourse has to expand its scope to include research and analysis of "library as place" from a user's perspective if it hopes to develop a deeper understanding of what the public library does for means to members of the communities in which they reside.

  • This study investigates the factors determining accounting method for R&D costs (capitalizevs. expense) in Korea. Using agency theory and other economic factors, probit and regression model have been developed to distinguish between firms choosing different accounting alternatives for R&D costs. The results are consistent to debt contract, R&D burden and regulation hypotheses both in probit and regression analysis. The size variable has opposite sign in univariate t-test and probit analysis, which may be due to the differences of political environment between Korea and the US. Generally, the results are consistent to those of previous research. The evidence suggests that larger firms with higher leverage and larger burden of R&D costs are more likely to capitalize R&D costs, while regulated firms are more likely to expense R&D costs.

  • The purpose of the present paper is to review the content of the Consumer Education Programs, is to establish a hypothetical model regarding the contents of the consumer Education programs, and is also to analyze the contents of the Consumer Education Programs seen from the various angles of the value of our home life. For this, we have researched literatures and habe made the hypothetical model for the desirable contents of the consumer education programs, and also have conducted a case study together with and analysis bearing the actual evidence. Form what we have studied regarding the results of the research, conclusions that can be derived are as follows; First, the contents of the consumer education programs of Korea are not sufficient to improve the quality of the environments of our houses, family life, and decision making. Secondly, the contents of the consumer education do not meet the societal and economic changes. Third, since the contents of the consumer program of Korea emphasize the theory-oriented discussion, they are not suitable to educate the consumers who are really in need of consumer education.

  • The Korea urbanization has been accelerated without regard to regional traits and the environment. Most of rural areas have been overurbanized with proper and long term plan. Especially the case of Yongin-community which is located 50km south of Seoul reveals a typical wrong urbanization policy. Evidence of such wrong policy is proved by this study for last three decades(1970-2000) in political economic approach with special reference to the Manuel Castells' theory. The study concludes that urbanization with no proper development plan is mostly vulnerable and wasteful. And the environment is once spoiled, it is almost impossible to recover, so it is necessary for us long term and proper plan before development.

  • This paper gives a thorough investigation into Mandarin sentence-final particles (henceforth SFPs). First I induce core grammatical functions and semantic interpretations of SFPs. Based on Rizzi's (1997) Split CP hypothesis, I make some modifications to accommodate Mandarin SFPs and map them onto separate functional heads within a proper hierarchy. I also examine some empirical evidence of head directionality and tentatively assume Mandarin C is head-initial. To explain the surface head-final order, in light of Chomsky's (2001) Phase Theory and Hsieh's (2005) revised Spell-out hypothesis, I pose a CP complement to Spec movement. Following Moro's (2000) idea, I further claim the motivation behind is to seek for antisymetry.

  • Anecdotal reports indicate that maladaptive patterns of Internet use constitute behavioral addiction. Internet addiction is characterized by unrestrained and awfully controlled engrossment or behaviors regarding internet access that lead to impairment, stress, dimensionally measured depression, indicators of social separation and anguish. By reviewing and analyzing approximately 100 articles we present evidence that are able to provide an overview of the main themes and proclivity covered by existing and relevant studies. The vital detection of this research unveils that many factors related to social, demographic, lifestyle changes related constructs have a bearing on the phenomenon of internet addiction strongly. This study not only reached certain conclusions for both theory and practice, but also defined future lines of research according to the gaps detected by the study's results. The main findings from this literature, though not conclusive, but will help the researcher and policymakers to obtain a better understanding and description of the problem faced by the youth and necessary to develop some remedies to lessen the addiction phenomenon.

  • This studies aims to examine the factors that affect continuous usage reliability of social commerce users that has been really active recently based on using EDT (Expectation Disconfirmation Theory) and extended ECM (Expected confirmation Model). With a statistical analysis, this paper suggests a conceptual model, based on the empirical evidence from this study. The result reveal that perceived usage easiness has a positive effect on meeting the expected confirmation and satisfaction. As perceived quality, social influence and price appeared to reflect a positive effect on fulfilling expected confirmation. This implies that users consider perceived usage easiness, perceived quality, social influence and price important in using social commerce persistently and that as their expected confirmation fulfillment and satisfaction increase that leads to further rise in their future intended continuous usage.

  • It has been postulated that acetylcholine exhibits both nicotine and muscarinic activity because of its ability to present two patterns of essential atoms to the receptors. These two patterns arise from the ability of the molecule to exist in more than one preferred conformation. The molecule S(+)-acetyl-${\beta}$-methylacetylcholine exhibits only muscarinic activity. Calculations using molecular orbital theory predict that this molecule prefers only the muscarinic conformation. This is offered as an explanation for the exclusive role of the molecule and as evidence supporting the twoconformation, two-activities hypothesis.

  • This paper discusses the economics of skyscraper construction in Manhattan since 1990. First the paper reviews the economic theory of skyscraper height. Next it documents the frequency and heights of skyscraper construction in the last 25 years. Then the paper reviews the relative movements of office rents, condominium prices, and construction costs. Statistical results suggest that the resurgence of Manhattan's skyscraper construction is being driving by the rise in the average price of apartments, and is not being driven by rising office rents or falling construction costs. Statistical evidence shows that the height premium has not been rising over the last decade. Developers have been purchasing air rights (and bidding up the prices) in order to satisfy the demand for supertall buildings. In the next five to ten years, Manhattan is likely to see over thirty 200-meter or taller buildings, as compared to only four since 2010.
