  • A regenerative evaporative cooler has been fabricated and tested for the evaluation of cooling performance. The regenerative evaporative cooler is a kind of indirect evaporative cooler comprised of multiple pairs of dry and wet channels. The air flowing through the dry channels is cooled without any change in the humidity and at the outlet of the dry channel a part of air is redirected to the wet channel where the evaporative cooling takes place. The regenerative evaporative cooler fabricated in this study consists of the multiple pairs of finned channels in counterflow arrangement. The fins and heat transfer plates were made of aluminum and brazed for good thermal connection. Thin porous layer coating was applied to the internal surface of the wet channel to improve surface wettability. The regenerative evaporative cooler was placed in a climate chamber and tested at various operation condition. The cooling performance is found greatly influenced by the evaporation water flow rate. To improve the cooling performance, the evaporation water flow rate needs to be minimized as far as the even distribution of the evaporation water is secured. At the inlet condition of $32^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH, the outlet temperature was measured at $22^{\circ}C$ which is well below the inlet wet-bulb temperature of $23.7^{\circ}C$.

  • Effects of Ga contents of CIGS absorber layer on the performance of thin films solar cells were investigated. As Ga content increased, the grain size of CIGS films decreased presumably because Ga diffusion during 2nd stage of co-evaporation process is more difficult than In diffusion. Performances of corresponding solar cell show systematic dependence on Ga content in which open circuit voltage increases and short circuit current and fill factor decrease as Ga contents increases. At a optimal condition of Ga/(In+Ga)=0.27, the solar cell shows a conversion efficiency of 15.6% with $V_{OC}$ of 0.625 V, $J_{SC}$ of 35.03 mA/$cm^2$ and FF of 71.3%.

  • The goal of this research is to develop and apply the generalized regression neural networks model (GRNNM) embedding genetic algorithm (GA) for pan evaporation, which is missed or ungaged and for the alfalfa reference evapotranspiration, which is not measured in South Korea. The GRNNM-GA is evaluated using the training, the testing, and reproduction performance respectively for the estimation of the PE and the alfalfa reference evapotranspiration. Since the observed data of the alfalfa reference evapotranspiration using lysimeter have not been measured for a long time in South Korea, the PM method is used to assume and estimate the observed alfalfa reference evapotranspiration. From this research, we evaluate the impact of the limited climatical variables on the accuracy of the GRNNM-GA. We should, furthermore, construct the credible data of the PE and the alfalfa reference evapotranspiration and suggest the reference data for irrigation and drainage networks system in South Korea.

  • Thermal analysis has been performed to design a high-performance $LH_2$ vessel with about 1% per day evaporation loss. Analysis includes the combined insulations of MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation) and VCS (Vapor-Cooled Shield) under high vacuum. Combined insulation of MLI and VCS shows the existence of optimal location of VCS to minimize evaporation loss. Comparison of parallel-type DVCS (Double Vapor-Cooled Shield) and serial-type DVCS is also made to show the effectiveness of the system. The results indicate that the serial-type DVCS vessel is better than the parallel-type DVCS vessel with respect to overall evaporation loss. The combined insulation of SVCS (Single Vapor-Cooled Shield) with a partial MLI can give a similar performance characteristics compared to that with MLI and DVCS.

  • This paper reviews recent progress in research and development (R&D) of reactive co-evaporation for high performance REBCO coated conductors in Korea. Two types of reactive co-evaporation methods were developed for the deposition of SmBCO and GdBCO superconducting layers respectively on the IBAD (Ion Beam Assisted Deposition)-MgO template in the Korean coated conductor project. Batch type reactive co-evaporation equipment and its processing were developed for SmBCO coated conductors at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in conjunction with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and a very high critical current exceeding 1,000 A/cm at 77 K in the self field was achieved through the optimization of deposition parameters. Reel-to-reel type reactive co-evaporation processing with a high conversion rate was also developed, while long length GdBCO coated conductors have been routinely produced by SuNAM Co. The minimum critical current of 422 A/cm-w at 77 K in self field was confirmed for 1 km-long GdBCO tape.

  • This study analyzed the change of gas turbine performance with air temperature decrease by the evaporation cooling system in summer season. Gas turbine performance was tested on the condition that ambient temperature is $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. As a result, Air temperature at the compressor inlet was decreased by $4.12^{\circ}C$ after the installation of evaporation cooling system. Decreased air temperature followed by increased air density affected gas turbine performance, Which increased compressor pressure ratio by 0.27, improved compressor efficiency of 0.29 %p, improved gas turbine enthalpy drop efficiency of 0.31 %p, improved the gas turbine efficiency by 0.44 %p, improved electric power output by 4,489 kW. On the other side, the influence of the humidity increase and flow resistance increase was negligible.

  • Falling-film evaporation experiments for aqueous solution of lithium bromide (LiBr) were performed on a horizontal smooth 19.05-mm-dia copper tube. Average heat transfer coefficients were obtained with varied film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. Heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing system pressure and decreasing concentration. For degrees of wall superheat, the heat transfer coefficient did not't show the distinct trend. For this experimental ranges, heat transfer coefficients showed maximum values at an optimal film Reynolds number. The results of this work were compared with pool boiling data reported previously, and it was shown that the heat transfer performance is superior to the pool boiling.

  • In this study, thin film evaporation of water on low-fin tubes were experimentally investigated. Five low-fin tubes with different fin spacing and fin height were tested. Test range covered 0.146kg/ms $\leq$$\Gamma$$\leq$0.219kg/ms and 10㎾/$\m^2$$\leq$q $\leq$70㎾/$\m^2$. Saturation temperature was loot. Compared with the plain tube, low fin tubes enhanced the water film evaporation from 60% to 100%. Tubes with fin spacing smaller than 2mm and fin height higher than 1mm performed better than tubes with other fin configuration. However, when fin spacing was too small at high film flow or fin height was too high at low film flow, the performance decreased. The heat transfer coefficient slightly increased as the flow rate increased. Correlations are developed based on present data.

  • Vapor compression refrigerators have much critical variables such as the controls of temperature and pressure switches, control durations and operating hours of electronic valves. This study compares and analyzes the data which is obtained from system controlling of the evaporation temperatures which are generally used in automatic pump down operating systems. Through this study, the automatic evaporation control operation system will be more ideal for the system to keep the proper temperature distribution depending on the purpose of evaporation side. The automatic pump down control operation is more appropriate for the system to aim at the effective use of evaporation side without using the temperature difference. And this test will be proved that the changes at the low pressure side didn't have significant impacts on the high pressure side.

  • Most merchant ships are supplied with the only essential fresh water from a port for economical cargo transportation and the reduction of a nevigation expense. And the deficient fresh water for a voyage is produced by fresh water generator with the various exhaust energy generated in the engine room on a voyage. At present, an evaporation type fresh water generator are extensively used on ship because the operating cost of it is lower than that of a reverse osmosis pressure type. This study introduce a development results on the large evaporation type fresh water generator enable to be used for large merchant ships. It is accomplished the performance test using the developed large fresh water generator.
