In this study, we classified observed fog events in the Middle Nakdong River near Gumi and analyzed the meteorological characteristics before and after the fog formation. The observation was performed from 2013 to 2015 using visibility meter. A total of 74 fog events were observed and most of them were classified as steam fog. The duration of observed steam fogs was longer than that of typical inland fogs because the nocturnal evaporation from the water surface was enhanced by the topographical characteristics. In order to analyze the effect of evaporation from the stream on the fog duration, the evaporation was estimated using the Penman-Monteith and the Bulk aerodynamic methods. The estimated evaporation by the Bulk method was similar to the actual evaporation from the water surface. Therefore, the Bulk method is suitable for estimating the evaporation from water surface. The evaporation amount, estimated by using the Bulk method was higher on fog days than non-fog days at 06 LST and 07 LST. The added evaporation of fog days released latent heat to the atmosphere and provided energy to maintain the turbulence in the fog. This phenomenon was confirmed by the increase of wind speed, temperature and turbulent kinetic energy within the fog.

Visibility and Automatic Weather System(AWS) data near Nakdong river were analyzed to characterize fog formation during 2012-2013. The temperature was lower than its nearby city - Daegu, whereas the humidity was higher than the city. 157 fog events were observed in total during the 2 year period. About 65% of the events occurred in fall (September, October, and November) followed by winter, summer, and spring. 94 early morning fog events of longer than 30 minutes occurred when south westerly wind speed was lower than 2 m/s. During these events, the water temperature was highest followed by soil surface and air temperatures due to the advection of cold and humid air from nearby hill. The observed fog events were categorized using a fog-type classification algorithm, which used surface cooling, wind speed threshold, rate of change of air temperature and dew point temperature. As a result, frontal fog observed 6 times, radiation 4, advection 13, and evaporation 66. The evaporation fog in the study area lasted longer than other reports. It is due to the interactions of cold air drainage flow and warm surface in addition to the evaporation from the water surface. In particular, more than 60% of the evaporation fog events were accompanied with cold air flows over the wet and warm surface. Therefore, it is needed for the identification of the inland fog mechanism to evaluate the impacts of nearby topography and land cover as well as water body.
The classification of fog type and the characteristics of fog based on fog events over South Korea were investigated using a 3-year (2015~2017) visibility meter data. One-minute visibility meter data were used to identify fog with present weather codes and surface observation data. The concept of fog events was adopted for the better definition of fog properties and more objective classification through the detailed investigation of life cycle of fog. Decision tree method was used to classify the fog types and the final fog types were radiation fog, advection fog, precipitation fog, cloud base lowering fog and morning evaporation fog. We enhanced objectivity in classifying the types of fog by adding the satellite and the buoy observations to the conventional usage of AWS and ceilometer data. Radiation fog, the most common type in South Korea, frequently occurs in inland during autumn. A considerable number of advection fogs occur in island area in summer, especially in July. Precipitation fog accounts for more than a quarter of the total fog events and frequently occurs in islands and coastal areas. Cloud base lowering fog, classified using ceilometer, occurs occasionally for all areas but the occurrence rate is relatively high in east and west coastal area. Morning evaporation fog type is rarely observed in inland. The occurrence rate of thick fog with visibility less than 100 meters is amount to 21% of total fog events. Although advection fog develops into thick fog frequently, radiation fog shows the minimum visibility, in some cases.
This paper examined the impacts of dam construction on fog characteristics over surrounding areas. Juamdam which only supplies the water for use and Chungjudam which generates electricity were selected. The number of foggy days, fog occurrence and dissipation time and the differences of each lake water temperature and air temperature at Sunchun and Chungju were analyzed. After the construction of dam, the relative humidity and water vapor pressure were decreased at Sunchun and Chungju. The number of foggy days did not increase at Sunchun while largely increased at Chungju. Just because Juamdam were contained water, the water vapor pressure at surrounding areas of the weather station were largely decreased. It delayed the time of fog occurrence by bringing out the decrease of steam fog. The foggy days increased over the Chungju area due to the difference between air and cold outlet water temperature. The increase of foggy days mainly resulted from evaporation during colder seasons and from the temperature inversion over the water surface during warmer seasons.
In this paper, we analyzed the physical and thermodynamic characteristics of fog by using the integrated water vapor (IWV) from Global Positioning System (GPS) networks and the regular observation data of meteorological stations in GPS sites. The cases of a radiation and an advection fog were selected as samples, the conversions of water substance from the water vapor to cloud water in fog were detected by the Bulk Water-Continuity Model, and the pattern analysis is adapted on GPS IWV, temperature, wind and relative humidity. Under the specific hypothesis (saturation and stable), GPS IWV could detect quantitatively the phase changing between the water vapor and cloud water content with condensation/evaporation during the formation and dissipation of fog. After it reaches to the saturation, the relative humidity can be a limited indicator for fog. However, GPS IWV can detect the status change of fog even after the saturation. It has indicated that GPS IWV could be a new observing technique for the processes of the fog formation and the dissipation.
This study was carried out not only to develop CFD model for numerically simulating fog cooling system but also to verify the validity of the developed model by data measured in fag cooling greenhouse. In addition the developed model was applied to investigate the effects of spraying water temperature, spraying water amount, spraying interval and evaporation percentage on the performance of the fog cooling system. According to the simulation results, the temperature differences between the measured and predicted temperatures at each measurement point were $0.1~1.4^{\circ}C$ in case of no shading and $0.2~2.3^{\circ}C$ in close of shading. The humidity differences were 0.3~6.0% and 0.7~10.6%, respectively in the cases of no shading and shading. Because the predicted data showed a good agreement with the measured ones, the developed model is supposed to be able to predict the cooling effect of the fog cooling system. The performance of fog cooling system was greatly influenced by spraying water amount, spraying interval and evaporation percentage, but it was not influenced by spraying water temperature.

In this study, characteristics of fog at Mokpo as the west coastal area of Jeonnam were investigated, using statistical analysis of observed fog and meteorological data. Higher frequency of the fog occurrence at Mokpo was showed in spring(32%) and summer(34%) due to the seasonal high atmospheric pressure. Regional characteristics as radiation cooling, advection of fog and water vapor from surrounding sea and Yeongsan lake, and frontal fog had major effect on the coastal fog at Mokpo on the meteorological conditions of north-west/south wind and calm($0{\sim}2m/s$). Also, as the results of analyzing data of before and after the construction of Yeongsan dam, the frequency of annual mean fog days increased 41 %, specially increased 178% in autumn. The increase of fog days mainly resulted from evaporation during colder seasons and from temperature inversion during warmer seasons over the water surface of Yeongsan lake. The construction of Yeongsan dam had a little effect on the meteorological conditions concerning fog occurrence, because Yeongsan dam which only supplies the water for use do not always carry out outlet of the cold water. In addition, the sea fog at Heuksando located in offshore had not effect on the occurrence of fog at Mokpo.

A drone has recently got attention as an instrument for weather observation in lower atmosphere because it can produce the high spatiotemporal resolution weather data even though the weather phenomenon is inaccessible. Sea fog is a weather phenomenon occurred in lower atmosphere, and has observational limitations because it occurs on the sea. Therefore, goal of this study is to analyze the vertical structures about inflow, development and dispersion of sea fog using the high-resolution weather data with the meteorological sensor-equipped drone. This study observed sea fogs in the west coast of the Korean peninsula from March to October 2021 and investigated one sea fog inflowed into the coast on June 8th 2021. θe - qv diagrams (θe: equivalent potential temperature, qv: water vapor ratio) and vertical wind structures were analyzed. At inflow of sea fog, moist adiabatically stable layer was formed in 0-300 m and prevailing wind was switched from south-southwesterly to west-southwesterly under 120 m. Both changes are favorable for sea fog on the location. θe and qv plummeted in a layer 0-183 m. The inflowed sea fog developed from 183 m to 327 m by mixing with ambient atmosphere on top of sea fog. Also, strong mechanical turbulence near ground drove a vertical mixing under stable layer. At dispersion of sea fog, as θe on ground gradually increased, air condition was changed to neutral. Evaporation occurred on both bottom and top in sea fog. These results induced dissipation of sea fog.
Fog deposition onto the cool-temperate deciduous forest around Lake Mashu in northern Japan was estimated by the inferential method using the parameterizations of deposition velocity and liquid water content of fog (LWC). Two parameterizations of fog deposition velocity derived from field experiments in Europe and numerical simulations using a detailed multi-layer atmosphere-vegetation-soil model were tested. The empirical function between horizontal visibility (VIS) and LWC was applied to produce hourly LWC as an input data for the inferential method. Weekly mean LWC computed from VIS had a good correlation with LWC sampled by an active string-fog collector. By considering the enhancement of fog deposition due to the edge effect, fog deposition calculated by the inferential method using two parameterizations of deposition velocity agreed with that computed from throughfall data. The results indicated that the inferential method using the current parameterizations of deposition velocity and LWC can provide a rough estimation of water input due to fog deposition onto cool-temperature deciduous forests. Limitations of current parameterizations of deposition velocity related to wind speed, evaporation loss of rain and fog droplets intercepted by tree canopies, and leaf area index were discussed.

This study was conducted to provide a basis for raising farm income by increasing the yield and extending the cultivation period by creating an environment where crops can be cultivated normally during high temperatures in summer. The maximum cooling load of the multi-span greenhouse with a floor area of 504 ㎡ was found to be 462,609 W, and keeping the greenhouse under 32℃ without shading the greenhouse at a high temperature, it was necessary to fog spray 471.6 L of water per hour. The automatic fog cooling control device was developed to effectively control the fog device, the flow fan, and the light blocking device constituting the fog cooling system. The fog cooling system showed that the temperature of the greenhouse could be lowered by 6℃ than the outside temperature. The relative humidity of the fog-cooled greenhouse was 40-80% during the day, about 20% higher than that of the control greenhouse, and this increase in relative humidity contributed to the growth of cucumbers. The relative humidity of the fog cooling greenhouse during the day was 40-80%, which was about 20% higher than that of the control greenhouse, and this increase in relative humidity contributed to the growth of cucumbers. The yield of cucumbers in the fog-cooled greenhouse was 1.8 times higher in the single-span greenhouse and two times higher in the multi-span greenhouse compared to the control greenhouse.
