  • Various desorption methods were investigated for an activated carbon and zeolite 13X packed bed after benzene adsorption. Desorption experiments using hot steam, purge gas, and evacuation were performed. As a result, the desorption with hot steam showed the best performance. Hot steam makes the temperature in the adsorption column increase and gives arise to the desorption. Drying process should be accompanied to increase the efficiency because steam vapor prevents the adsorption later. The vacuum desorption showed poor performance and it reveals that temperature swing operation is more effective than pressure swing operation. In the purge gas desorption, good performance was achieved using evacuation.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate the change of pressure differential and smoke propagation characteristics in the elevator lobby with the resident's evacuation scenarios using fire modelling technique. The results showed absolute pressures in the fire room and elevator lobby can significantly increase to cause fire door to the stairway unclosed once it is open. This is due to constant pressure differentials, the increasing reference pressure of fire lobby and pressure leak from elevator lobby to fire lobby. Smoke exhaust mechanism was needed to prevent the continuous pressure rise in the living room. Over 200 Pa was expected upon closing the door during pressurization, which provide difficulties in opening the door for next refugee. Opening both fire door and entrance door may induce smoke flow from fire room to elevator lobby and stairway.

  • In order to manage traffic operations efficiently, it is required to establish evacuation strategies, including path, disaster prevention, and signal control. This is because the delayed response of operators would cause dreadful loss of our community. Therefore, it is very important to do the research related to traffic disaster prevention system. In this paper, we select the City of Cheongju as a study area since lots of damage resulting from natural disaster such as storm and flood have been frequently taken place. In addition, this paper suggest traffic disaster prevention measures and analyzed its effect on signal operation to achieve high level of traffic efficiency. As a result, traffic flow is similar to normal condition when we applied developed signal operation method. It is also demonstrated if disaster information is spread out as fast as it can be, and signal operation is managed properly in case by case, we conclude that user safety has to be secured.

  • In the event of an earthquake, non-structural components require seismic performance to ensure evacuation routes and to protect lives from falling non-structural components. Accordingly, the seismic design code proposes horizontal force for the design and evaluation of non-structural components. Ground motion observed on each floor is affected by a building's eigen vibration mode. Therefore, the earthquake damage of non-structural components is determined by the characteristics of the non-structural component system and the vibration characteristics of the building. Floor response spectra in the seismic design code are estimated through time history analysis using seismic waves. However, it is difficult to use floor response spectra as a design criterion because of user-specific uncertainties of time history analysis. In addition, considering the response characteristics of high-rise buildings to long-period ground motions, the safety factor of the proposed horizontal force may be low. Therefore, this study carried out the horizontal force review proposed in the seismic design code through dynamic analysis and evaluated the floor response of seismic waves considering buildings and predominant periods of seismic waves.

  • The subway station is not only an effective means to solve urban traffic problems, but also a kind of representative city shelters with a variety of functions such as urban beauty and disaster prevention. At the same time, the subway station as public facilities need activate the urban functions and through the effective design schemes for a variety of the facade of underground entrance to improve users' awareness and reliability for the subway station as a city shelters. This study is conducted to purpose the design direction considering design and disaster preventing characteristics of the underground subway station entrance. In addition, it will provide a basic reference for the subway station in the renovation and construction. The study is composed of literature reviews and field survey. The literature reviews through papers and documents related to the city shelters, the components and characteristics of city shelters, and components and characteristics of facade design of underground entrance at subway station. Before the field survey through the online surveys with evacuation capabilities and screening only the subway station. And field survey is conducted on the site with careful observation and confirmation. Last cluster analysis were applied to the finally selected samples by the SPSS Win18.0

  • Diamond core drills are applied to drill difficult-to-cut materials. This paper proposes basic understanding of ceramic drilling mechanics and characteristics of main factors affecting tool life, tool wear, cutting force, and chipping thickness. In contrast to conventional drilling, the core drilling process make deep grooves on the workpiece. One difficulty of it is the evacuation of chips from the drilled groove. As the drilling depth increases, an increased amount of chips tend to cluster together and clog the groove. Eventually severe wear develops and diamond grits are separated from the drill body. To relieve the clogging problem and to evacuate chips from the groove easily, the helical drilling process is applied for the core drilling process. To analyze drilling characteristics and derive optimal drilling conditions, tool life, tool wear, cutting force, and chipping thickness are quantified through the monitoring system and the Taguchi method. Mathematical models for the tool life and chipping thickness are derived from the response surface method. Optimal drilling database has been constructed through the experimental models.

  • In order to reduce flood damage with debris flow, it is necessary to build up comprehensive flood control, including structural and non-structural countermeasures. In this paper, the decision making factors of individual refuge activities which are major non-structural activities to save peoples, lives against flood have been estimated based on questionnaire survey. Furthermore, in order to effective debris flow countermeasures, its simulation has carried out and it will useful for minimizing their damages.

  • Steam ejector systems are widely used for the evacuation systems because of their high working confidence and simlicity. And recently these are used as the thermo-compressors in various energy saving systems. In this practical experiment, we have obtained the results as follows : (1) The velocity coefficient of the motive steam nozzle was 0.92-0.98. (2) The optimal area ratio was 0.00625 at pressure ratio 5.2 and expansion ratio 101.3. (3) The performance and efficiency of the steam ejector were mainly affected by the axial position of nozzle. (4) The good performance of the domestic manufactured steam ejector was confirmed in comparison with the foreign one. And by experimental results, we have carried out the improvement of Computer Aided Design Program of steam ejector which will be helpful for systematic research into the steam ejector.

  • Recently, South Korea is reaching aged society through ageing society. Accordingly, facility related to aged is increased consistently because of effort to improve the welfare of the elderly through elderly long term care insurance in 2008. however, the number of fires in the elderly facilities is increasing rapidly too. It is becoming bigger and higher and the characteristics of person who is unable to afford are mostly having difficult evacuation. so fire safety guildelines are urgently needed but korea research is insufficient. In this study, we propose a fire scenario through investigation of fire causes for fire safety guideline development of elderly facility, and describe to the fire safety countermeasure.
