  • This study was performed to understand the morphological and ecological characteristics of Peridinium bipes var. occultatum Lindem., which is the organism responsible for freshwater red tides in Sangsa dam and Miryang dam reservoirs. The samples were collected from April to July 2004 when the freshwater red tides occurred. In the study, we were able to differentiate P. bipes var. occultatum from P. bipes, a closely related species, by its smaller antapical horn size. In Miryang dam reservoir the red tide occurred only within the area of the upstream, but it was well developed in all of the water area in Sangsa dam reservoir. In 2004 average LTSI (Lake Trophic Status Index; Yang and Dickman, 1993) of Miryang dam reservoir was 3.53 of mesotrophic state and Sangsa dam reservoir was 8.59 of eutrophic state. It was determined, through culture experiments under various conditions that vitamins, trace elements, phosphorus and nitrogen were important contributing factors to the growth of P. bipes var. occultatum. A rapid toxic effect of P. bipes var. occultatum on aquatic organisms such of Daphnia magna and Oryzias latipes was not identified in this study.

  • In order to solve water quality problem of domestic dam reservoir, many projects have been performed in a point of view to restoration of water quality. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of release from sediment on water quality and release characteristics. Daecheong dam reservoir was investigated for two years, from 1998 to 1999. The nutrient release rates of Daecheong reservoir is less than foreign eutrophic reservoir at anoxic condition. For the evaluation of the effect of nutrient release on water quality, internal and external loading was calculated at Daecheong reservoir. As total phosphorus loading from sediment is calculated 9.3 ton/yr and inflow loading from Daecheong reservoir watershed 118 ton/yr, internal loading shows the portion of 7.88% to external loading. At this study, because sampling point was choosed at the point where much sediment is accumulated, experimental result is more than average release rates. Because Daecheong reservoir shows complete thermal stratification and anoxic condition below 30m from water surface in summer seasons, released phosphorus from sediment can not transfer to epilimnion and eventually resettles. Therefore sediment has insignificant impacts on water quality on Daecheong dam reservoir.

  • This review paper summarizes the theory, application, and potential drawbacks of diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) probe which is a widely used in-situ passive sampling technique for monitoring inorganic contaminants in aquatic environments. The DGT probe employs a series of layers including a filter membrane, a diffusive hydrogel, and an ionic exchange resin gel in a plastic unit. The filter side is exposed to an aquatic environment after which dissolved inorganic contaminants, such as heavy metals and nuclides, diffuse through the hydrogel and are accumulated in the resin gel. After retrieval, the contaminants in the resin gel are extracted by strong acid or base and the concentrations are determined by analytical instruments. Then aqueous concentrations of the inorganic contaminants can be estimated from a mathematical equation. The DGT has also been used to monitor nutrients, such as ${PO_4}^{3-}$, in lakes, streams, and estuaries, which might be helpful in assessing eutrophic potential in aquatic environments. DGT is a robust in-situ passive sampling techniques for investigating bioavailability, toxicity, and speciation of inorganic contaminants in aquatic environments, and can be an effective monitoring tool for risk assessment.

  • We compared the structure of fish community and condition of major fish species in Lake Chungpyung and Lake Paldang, which are relatively shallow, meso-eutrophic, cascading dam reservoirs on the North Han River. Two lakes have wide littoral zone in the lakeside providing similarly good habitat for fishes, whereas fishery and water recreational activities such as motorboating, water skiing are allowed in Lake Chungpyung but are prohibited in Lake Paldang. The average lengths of large size fishes in Lake Chungpyung are shorter than those of same species in Lake Paldang, resulting in the slight distortion of generation distribution of those species in Lake Chungpyung, possibly owing to the active fishery such as fixed shore net fishing, gill net fishing and angling. Meanwhile the condition of fishes represented by the length-weight relationship of fish species did not show the significant differences between two lakes and showed normal condition. To evaluate the impact of physical disturbance such as loud noise and turbulent wave from water recreational activities to fishes precisely, further studies including physiological responses to stress an spawing activity should be needed.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a method of controlling redtide microbes which grow abundantly and form harmful algal bloom in eutrophic waterbody with yellow loess and hydrogen peroxide. In the laboratory test, hydrogen peroxide was applied to single species of C. polykrikoides and multispecies of redtide microbes. The seawater was evaluated by the pre-test analysis including chlorophyll-a, luminance and transmittance. The test results showed that both single and mixed species of redtide microbes could be controlled with the dose of 30mg $H_2O_2/L$. Residual hydrogen peroxide was completely decomposed with the addition of powdered yellow loess at 2g/L~10g/L. However, the decomposition rate of residual hydrogen peroxide for sintered granular yellow loess was relatively low compared to the use of powdered one. With the addition of dissolved oxygen concentration was increased at a rate of 0.013 mg DO/mg $H_2O_2$, which is a little lower than the one predicted theoretically. No evidence for any detrimental effects on Artemia, a type of brine shrimps, was shown up to the concentration of 100mg $H_2O_2/L$.

  • A freshwater lake water quality management system(FLAQUM) was developed to help regional manager for the water quality of a rural basin. The integrated user interface system FLAQUM written in Visual Basic, includes three subsystems such as a database management system, basin pollutant loads simulation model using SWMM model and freshwater lake water quality simulation model using WASP5 model. Pollutant load simulation model was applied to simulate the discharge and pollutant loading from the watershed, and freshwater lake water quality model was applied to analyze the changes in water quality with respect to watershed pollutant loads, and this model could be used in planning to control watershed pollutant source for water quality management. Database management system was constructed fur all input and output data processing, and it can be used to analyze statistical characteristics using constructed data. Results are displayed both graph and text for convenience of user. The results of FLAQUM application to Boryeong freshwater lake showed that the lake was in eutrophic condition. The major contribution of pollution comes from tributary No.1 and No.4, which have a large number of livestock farms. Therefore, water quality management must be focused on appropriate management of the livestock farming in the two breanchs.

  • Up to now, there have been done much efforts in regard to nitrate reductase activity (NRA) of dicotyledonous herbs and important crop monocotyledons, but few to wild plants having canopy structure such as Carex. The objective of the present study are to determine: a) the optimum in vivo NR assay conditions for leaf samples of Carex species, b) changes of NRA according to section within leaf and leaf ages, c) diurnal variations. Optimized assay media of each Carex species were determined. NRA of C. rostrata adapted to oligotrophic habitats is readily saturated at lower substrate concentration than those of C. distans and C. gracilis, adapted to meso- and eutrophic habitats, respectively. All Carex species investigated have higher NRA in leaves than in roots. NRA of all species showed maximal values at the middle section of each leaf and in the youngest fully expanded leaves. Compared to C. gracilis, NR in leaves of C. distans was adapted readily to the light period. On the whole, Carex showed rather delayed diurnal variation. Even if the in vivo nitrate reductase assay based on nitrite estimation does not give an accurate estimation of total nitrate reduced, it still serves as a useful tool to find out relative differences in varying environmental conditions. Additionally, in vivo RNA measurements are helpful to understand nitrate reduction and basic nitrogen metabolism of Carex species having different canopy structure.

  • In order to determine the factors causing Microcystis spp. bloom in the lower Nakdong River (Mulgum), we prepared wide ranges of pH, nutrient(N, P) concentration and the light through an enclosure experiment far 10days (pH gradient. 6.5, 7.5, 8.5, 9.5; gradient of N, P: ${\frac{1}{2}}DW+{\frac{1}{2}}River$ Water (RW), RW only; four different levels of nutrient addition/day; light: 100, 85, 60, 30, 15% of full sun light). From three days, the difference of Microcystis density in each enclosures was observed. The high density of Microcystis was maintained in the treatments over pH 9.5 and 85% of full sun light. However, in all nutrient treatments, relatively lower cell density than that of pH and light treatments was observed. These results suggested that pH and light input may play more important roles than nutrients in the early development of Microcystis bloom in the eutrophic lower Nakdong River.

  • The limiting nutrient of eutrophication in freshwater bodies in Korea was examined and the phosphorus concentration standard for sewage treatment effluent was discussed. The weight ratio of N/P in 13 major reservoirs showed the range of 18 to 163, which implies phosphorus is more limited than nitrogen for algal growth. In the correlation analysis phosphorus showed higher correlation with chlorophyll-a concentration than with nitrogen. In the algal bioassay phosphorus spike test enhanced algal growth in all 25 samples of five reservoirs, while nitrogen was found to co-limit only in four samples. It confirms that phosphorus is the only limiting nutrient for eutrophication in Korean reservoirs. As many reservoirs are eutrophic in Korea, phosphorus control is critical for the management of water quality. The phosphorus standard of sewage treatment effluent in Korea was compared with other countries, and it can be concluded that phosphorus standard is too high to be effective in eutrophication control and a lower phosphorus standard is essential for the water quality improvement.

  • For the test organism of algal growth potential (AGP), the diatom in the genus Stephanodiscus which cause blooms in the Nakdong River was used instead of generally used strains of Selenastrum, Microcystis, or Anabaena. AGP results indicated that all the samples in the Nakdong River except for that from the Nakdan Bridge site were eutrophic state. Furthermore, the sample from Kumho River site was hypertrophic state. In the main stream Nakdong River, the value of AGP was lowest at the upstream Nakdan Bridge site and was highest at Koryoung Bridge site which is just downstream of Kumho River confluent point indicating the seriousness of pollution contributed by the Kumho River to the Nakdong River. Changes in the concentration of nutrients before and after the AGP tests and inter-relationship among the nutrients indicated that the growth of the Stephanodiscus in the AGP tests were mostly affected by the nitrate, silicate and phosphate. The limiting nutrient was identified by the nutrient addition experiments and the results showed that phosphate was the limiting nutrient for the growth of Stephanodiscus in the tested samples.
