The previously developed two dimensional model was modified in order to predict more accurately the degree of microsegregation and eutectic fraction on in weld metal whose solidification rate is very fast. The model employed the same assumptions with previous model but considered of a tip undercooling. The previously predicted microsegregation and eutectic fraction has the discrepancies between simulated and examined results in the weld metal solidification. The experiments for the weld metal solidification of 2024 A1 and Fe-Ni alloy were carried out in order to examine the reasonability and feasibility of this modified model. The concentration profile of the solute and eutectic fraction predicted by the simulation agreed well with those found from experimental works. According to the results, it was believed that the dendrite tip undercooling considered in the modified model be reasonable for predicting the degree of microsegregation more accurately in weld metla solidification. In the GTA welds, degree of dendrite-tip undercooling increases with increasing solidification rage(welding speed). This serves to increase the concentration of dendrite core and thus result in reducing the degree of segregation. And solid state diffusion(back diffusion) during solidification is very low in the weld metal solidification so that little additional homogenization of solute occurs during solidification. With consideration of tip undercooling this modified model can predict exactly degree of microsegregation and eutectic fraction from slow solidification(casting) to fast solidification(welding).
A micro-macroscopic analysis on the conduction-controlled directional casting of Al-Cu alloys is performed, in which emphases are placed on the microstructural features. In order to facilitate the solution procedure, an iterative micro-macroscopic coupling algorithm is developed. The predicted results show that the effect of finite back diffusion on the transient solidification process in comparison with the lever rule depends essentially on the initial concentration of an alloy. In the final casting, the eutectic fraction is distributed in an increasing-decreasing-increasing pattern, each mode of which is named the chill, interior and end zones. This nonuniformity per se suffices to justify the necessity of this work because it originates from the combined effects of finite back diffusion and cooling path-dependent nature of the eutectic formation. As the cooling rate is enhanced, not only the influence depths of boundaries narrow, but also the eutectic fractions in the chill and interior zones increase. In addition, it is revealed for the first time that the micro segregation band is formed in response to a sudden change in cooling rate during the directional casting. An increasing change creates an overshooting band in the eutectic fraction distribution, and vice versa.
It was known that the excellent wear resistance of hyper eutectic aluminum alloy is based on the primary Si particles which are distributed in the base metal. When the primary Si volume fraction increases, the smaller size have excellent wear resistance characteristics. However, this trend always does not match. There is no investigation result based on the materials and methods for real using parts. In this study, using the automotive parts manufacturer currently in use hyper eutectic Al alloy tensile test specimen type sample was fabricated by 350Ton high pressure die-casting machine. Then, fluidity, tensile, impact and wear resistance properties were evaluated. If the casting quality, primary Si size, fraction and distribution are similar, mechanical properties and wear resistance are equivalent.
The effect of carbon addition on the general corrosion behavior of high-chromium cast iron (HCCI) was studied by a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) or electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), or electrochemical polarization techniques in 0.1 mol dm-3 H2SO4 + 0.05 mol dm-3 HCl at room temperature. The addition of 2.1-2.8 wt% carbon to HCCI increased the fraction of eutectic austenite and eutectic carbide phases, while that of HCCI decreased the fraction of the primary austenitic phase. Potentiostatic polarization of the HCCI at -0.35 VSSCE or 0.0 VSSCE resulted in preferential general corrosion of the primary austenitic or eutectic austenitic phases, respectively. The decrease in corrosion current density and the shift in noble corrosion potential direction with increasing carbon content in the HCCI indicated that the fraction and the chemical composition of austenitic (primary and eutectic) and carbide phases were strongly related to the general corrosion behavior of the HCCI.
While high-temperature ceramic composites consisting of carbides, borides, and nitrides, the so-called ultra-high-temperature ceramics (UHTCs), have been commonly produced through solid-state sintering, melt-solidification is an alternative method for their manufacture. As many UHTCs are binary or ternary eutectic systems, they can be melted and solidified at a relatively low temperature via a eutectic reaction. The microstructure of the eutectic composites is typically rod-like or lamellar, as determined by the volume fraction of the second phase. Directional solidification can help fabricate more sophisticated UHTCs with highly aligned textures. This review describes the fabrication of UHTCs through the eutectic reaction and explains their mechanical properties. The use of melt-solidification has been limited to small specimens; however, the recently developed laser technology can melt large-sized UHTCs, suggesting their potential for practical applications. An example of laser melt-solidification of a eutectic ceramic composite is demonstrated.
Due to excellent abrasion resistance the high-chrome white irons are widely used in mining and mineral industries. Minor variation of carbon content in 28% chrome white iron resulted in difference in primarily solidified microstructure. Sub-eutectic (hypoeutectic) composition led to formation of primarily solidified dendrites. Formation of primarily solidified dendrites which were supersaturated with carbon and chrome also caused precipitation of fine secondary carbides that are different from relatively large plate type $M_7C_3$ carbides in the eutectic structure. Small portion of primarily solidified dendrite expected to contribute significantly to the improvement of abrasion resistance of the white iron because the dendrites provided mechanical support to carbides. The relative fraction of primary dendrite increased with reduction of carbon content from the eutectic composition. The increased fraction of primary dendrite increased hardness value of the white irons.
In the present study, the effect of variation in alloying elements on the carbide formation behavior during casting and homogenization treatment of M2 high speed steels was investigated. M2 high speed steels of various compositions were produced by vacuum induction melting. Contents of C, Cr, W, Mo, and V were varied from the basic composition of 0.8C, 0.3Si, 0.2Mn, 4.0Cr, 6.0W, 5.0Mo, and 2.0V in weight percent. Homogenization treatment at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hr followed by furnace cooling was performed on the ingots. Area fraction and chemical compositions of eutectic carbide in as-cast and homogenized ingots were analyzed. Area fraction of eutectic carbide appeared to be higher in the ingots with higher contents of alloying elements the area fraction of eutectic carbide also appeared to be higher on the surface regions than in the center regions of ingots. As a result of the homogenization treatment, $M_2C$ carbide, which was the primary eutectic carbide in the as-cast ingots, decomposed into thermodynamically stable carbides, MC and $M_6C$. The latter carbide was found to be the main one after homogenization. Fine carbides uniformly distributed in the matrix was found to be MC type carbide and coarsened by homogenization.
Microstructural characteristics of directionally solidified René 80 superalloy are investigated with optical microscope and scanning electron microscope; solidification velocity is found to change from 25 to 200 μm/s under the condition of constant thermal gradient (G) and constant alloy composition (Co). Based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, γ phase (1,322 ℃), MC carbide (1,278 ℃), γ/γ' eutectic phase (1,202 ℃), and γ' precipitate (1,136 ℃) are formed sequentially during cooling process. The size of the MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phases gradually decrease with increasing solidification velocity, whereas the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are nearly constant as a function of solidification velocity. It is estimated that the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are determined not by the solidification velocity but by the alloy composition. Microstructural characteristics of René 80 superalloy after solid solution heat-treatment and primary aging heat-treatment are such that the size and the area fraction of γ' precipitate are nearly constant with solidification velocity and the area fraction of γ/γ' eutectic phase decreases from 1.7 % to 0.955 %, which is also constant regardless of the solidification velocity. However, the size of carbide solely decreases with increasing solidification velocity, which influences the tensile properties at room temperature.
An analytical solution is presented for the conduction-dominated solidification of a binary mixture in a semi-infinite medium. The present approach differs from that of other solution by these four characteristics. (1) Solid fraction is determined from the phase diagram, (2) thermophysical properties in mushy zone are weighted according to the local solid fraction, (3) non-equilibrium solidification can be simulated and (4) the cooling condition of under-eutectic temperature can be simulated. Up to now, almost all analyses are based on the assumption of constant properties in mushy zone and solid fraction linearly with temperature or length. The validation for these assumptions, however, shows that serious error is found except some special cases. The influence of microscopic model on the macroscopic temperature profile is very small and can be ignored. But the solid fraction and average solid concentration which directly influence the quality of materials are drastically changed by the microscopic models. An approximate solution using the method of weighted residuals is also introduced and shows good agreement with the analytical solution. All calculations are performed for NH$_{4}$Cl-H$_{2}$O and Al-Cu system.
The effects of thickness, silicon and manganese contents on the mechanical properties of 3.3 wt%C-0.1 wt%S thin-section gray cast iron plates were investigated. The eutectic cell counts and volume fraction of pearlite in the matrix decreased with increased thickness and therefore the strength and hardness decreased with it. Even though the eutectic cell count increased with increased silicon content, the volume fraction of pearlite decreased and the strength and hardness decreased with it. The pearlite was refined more with increased manganese content and therefore the strength and hardness increased with it.
