Although a critical section reaches its flexural strength in reinforced concrete structures, the structure does not always fail because moment redistribution occurs during the formation of plastic hinges. Inelastic deformation in a plastic hinge region results in plastic rotation. A plastic hinge mainly depends on material characteristics. In this study, a plastic hinge length and plastic rotation are evaluated using the flexural curvature distribution which is derived from the material models given in Eurocode 2. The influence on plastic capacity the limit values of the material model used, that is, ultimate strain of concrete and steel and hardening ratio of steel(k), are investigated. As results, it is appeared that a large ultimate strain of concrete and steel is resulting in large plastic capactiy and also as a hardening ratio of steel increases, the plastic rotation increases significantly. Therefore, a careful attention would be paid to determine the limit values of material characteristics in the RC structures.

One way to achieve sustainable construction is to reduce concrete consumption by use of more sustainable and higher strength concrete. Modern building codes do not cover the use of ultra-high strength concrete (UHSC) in the design of composite structures. Against such background, this paper investigates experimentally the mechanical properties of steel fibre-reinforced UHSC and then the structural behaviors of UHSC encased steel (CES) members under both concentric and eccentric compressions as well as pure bending. The effects of steel-fibre dosage and spacing of stirrups were studied, and the applicability of Eurocode 4 design approach was checked. The test results revealed that the strength of steel stirrups could not be fully utilized to provide confinement to the UHSC. The bond strength between UHSC and steel section was improved by adding the steel fibres into the UHSC. Reducing the spacing of stirrups or increasing the dosage of steel fibres was beneficial to prevent premature spalling of the concrete cover thus mobilize the steel section strength to achieve higher compressive capacity. Closer spacing of stirrups and adding 0.5% steel fibres in UHSC enhanced the post-peak ductility of CES columns. It is concluded that the code-specified reduction factors applied to the concrete strength and moment resistance can account for the loss of load capacity due to the premature spalling of concrete cover and partial yielding of the encased steel section.
Considerable part of reinforced concrete building has suffered from destructive earthquakes in Turkey. This situation makes necessary to determine nonlinear behavior and seismic performance of existing RC buildings. Inelastic response of buildings to static and dynamic actions should be determined by considering both flexural plastic hinges and brittle shear hinges. However, shear capacities of members are generally neglected due to time saving issues and convergence problems and only flexural response of buildings are considered in performance assessment studies. On the other hand, recent earthquakes showed that the performance of older buildings is mostly controlled by shear capacities of members rather than flexure. Demand estimation is as important as capacity estimation for the reliable performance prediction in existing RC buildings. Demand estimation methods based on strength reduction factor (R), ductility (${\mu}$), and period (T) parameters ($R-{\mu}-T$) and damping dependent demand formulations are widely discussed and studied by various researchers. Adopted form of $R-{\mu}-T$ based demand estimation method presented in Eurocode 8 and Turkish Earthquake Code-2007 and damping based Capacity Spectrum Method presented in ATC-40 document are the typical examples of these two different approaches. In this study, eight different existing RC buildings, constructed before and after Turkish Earthquake Code-1998, are selected. Capacity curves of selected buildings are obtained with and without considering the brittle shear capacities of members. Seismic drift demands occurred in buildings are determined by using both $R-{\mu}-T$ and damping based estimation methods. Results have shown that not only capacity estimation methods but also demand estimation approaches affect the performance of buildings notably. It is concluded that including or excluding the shear capacity of members in nonlinear modeling of existing buildings significantly affects the strength and deformation capacities and hence the performance of buildings.
Geotechnical characteristic values for reliability-based design were analyzed using domestic marine clays. Analysis results indicate that there were close to mean values in oder of Student/Ovesen, Schneider and EN 1990's approach. However, it was found that the EN 1990's approach is inappropriate far estimating geotechnical characteristic value due to low reliability of estimation results. Four approaches had a trend of evaluating characteristic value conservatively with increasing of soil variability. Also, stability and settlement of breakwater subjected to nominal stress with unimproved soft grounds were computed to investigate the effects of estimated characteristic values. In case of using the Schneider's approach, the ratio of allowable bearing capacity/acting loads suggested 65% of that obtained from using the arithmetic mean approach, and showed underestimated value of 13.6% of the settlement obtained from the latter. The comparison of case designs using a representative value from arithmetic mean approach with the proposed approaches, using characteristic value showed that the former was mostly overestimated.

Casting Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) on an orthotropic steel deck and forming a composite action by connectors could improve the steel deck fatigue performance. This study presents the mechanical performance of a proposed post-combination connection between UHPC and steel, which had a low constraint effect on UHPC shrinkage. A total of 10 push-out tests were conducted for static and fatigue performance investigations. And the test results were compared with evaluation methods in codes to verify the latter's applicability. Meanwhile, nonlinear simulation and parametric works with material damage plasticity models were also conducted for the static and fatigue failure mechanism understanding. The static and fatigue test results both showed that fractures at stud roots and surrounding local UHPC crushes were the main failure appearances. Compared with normally arranged studs, group arrangement could result in reductions of static stud shear stiffness, strength, and fatigue lives, which were about 18%, 12%, and 27%, respectively. Compared with the test results, stud shear capacity and fatigue lives evaluations based on the codes of AASHTO, Eurocode 4, JSCE and JTG D64 could be applicable in general while the safety redundancies tended to be smaller or even insufficient for group studs. The analysis results showed that arranging studs in groups caused obviously uneven strain distributions. The severer stress concentration and larger strain ranges caused the static and fatigue performance degradations of group studs. The research outcome provides a very important basis for establishing a design method of connections in the novel post-combination steel-UHPC composite deck.

When steel fabricators erect structural members in field, temporary tightening of fastener should be useful. However, if bolt holes are not aligned by production error or natural condition, additional effort andpain should be provided to align bolt holes. It lead to longer period than times of construction (a primarily day of construction) and more cost than originally cost. This problem will be overcomed by oversize or slotted holes. Early, AISC and Eurocode have included provision for design process such oversize or slotted holes. But, domestic design method is not refered about oversize and slotted holes. Meanwhile, domestic design method and construction environment are variance with Europe and the United States of America. Therefore, a suitable design method for oversize and slotted holes in domestic real condition is needed. In this study, we evaluated behavior of the joints and decided the friction coefficient on oversize and slotted holes of friction joints with high strength bolts.
Initial damage to a stud due to corrosion, fatigue, unexpected overloading, a weld defect or other factors could degrade the shear capacity of the stud. Based on typical push-out tests, a FEM model and theoretical formulations were proposed in this study. Six specimens with the same geometric dimensions were tested to investigate the effect of the damage degree and location on the static behavior and shear capacity of stud shear connectors. The test results indicated that a reduction of up to 36.6% and 62.9% of the section area of the shank could result in a dropping rate of 7.9% and 57.2%, respectively, compared to the standard specimen shear capacity. Numerical analysis was performed to simulate the push-out test and validated against test results. A parametrical study was performed to further investigate the damage degree and location on the shear capacity of studs based on the proposed numerical model. It was demonstrated that the shear capacity was not sensitive to the damage degree when the damage section was located at 0.5d, where d is the shank diameter, from the stud root, even if the stud had a significant reduction in area. Finally, a theoretical formula with a reduction factor K was proposed to consider the reduction of the shear capacity due to the presence of initial damage. Calculating K was accomplished in two ways: a linear relationship and a square relationship with the damage degree corresponding to the shear capacity dominated by the section area and the nominal diameter of the damaged stud. This coefficient was applied using Eurocode 4, AASHTO LRFD (2014) and GB50017-2003 (2003) and compared with the test results found in the literature. It was found that the proposed method produced good predictions of the shear capacity of stud shear connectors with initial damage.
Shear studs with a diameter of 19mm or 22mm are typically used in steel-concrete composite bridge. For the simplification of details in steel bridges, the convenience of removing concrete slab, and the efficient distribution of shear pockets for precast decks, large studs can be an excellent alternative. Through push-out tests on large stud shear connectors that transcend the limitation of current design codes, static behavior was investigated and comparisons with design equations performed. The shear stiffness of the connectors in elastic range and trilinear load-slip curves were proposed after shear tests on 25mm, 27mm, and 30mm studs. The ultimate slip capacity and ultimate strength of large studs were also evaluated, with the test results revealing conservative values for the design shear strength in Eurocode-4. For 30mm stud shear connectors, the welding quality and bearing capacity of concrete slab should be improved.

The structural design of the steel eccentrically braced frame (EBF) was developed and analyzed in this study through multiobjective optimization (MOO). For the optimal design, NSGA-II which is one of the genetic algorithms was utilized. The amount of structure and interfloor displacement were selected as the objective functions of the MOO. The constraints include strength ratio and rotation angle of the link, which are required by structural standards and have forms of the penalty function such that the values of the objective functions increase drastically when a condition is violated. The regulations in the code provision for the EBF system are based on the concept of capacity design, that is, only the link members are allowed to yield, whereas the remaining members are intended to withstand the member forces within their elastic ranges. However, although the pareto front obtained from MOO satisfies the regulations in the code provision, the actual nonlinear behavior shows that the plastic deformation is concentrated in the link member of a certain story, resulting in the formation of a soft story, which violates the capacity design concept in the design code. To address this problem, another constraint based on the Eurocode was added to ensure that the maximum values of the shear overstrength factors of all links did not exceed 1.25 times the minimum values. When this constraint was added, it was observed that the resulting pareto front complied with both the design regulations and capacity design concept. Ratios of the link length to beam span ranged from 10% to 14%, which was within the category of shear links. The overall design is dominated by the constraint on the link's overstrength factor ratio. Design characteristics required by the design code, such as interstory drift and member strength ratios, were conservatively compared to the allowable values.

This paper presents an experimental investigation on the structural performance of precast ribbed panel specimens and bridge deck specimens fabricated from the panels. The panel specimens are developed for permanent deck forms of railway bridges (PSC girder). The decks of railway bridges have short lengths compared with highway bridges. Therefore, precast panels for railway bridges are different from those of highway bridges. The precast panels have ribs designed for crack control at the bottom of the sections. Two kinds of specimens were examined: one with 400-mm width and one with 1200-mm width. Three specimens of each type were fabricated, and a total of 12 specimens were tested. In this test, the ultimate load, strain of the reinforcement and concrete, crack width, deformation, and slip were measured. The structural performance of the specimens was assessed using the Korea railway bridge design code and Eurocode. All specimens met the current design criteria for structural strength and serviceability.
