  • Stomach contents of hairtail, Trichiurus lepturus collected in the Nakdong River Estuary were examined quantitatively. T. lepturus was a carnivore which consumed mainly fishes, crustaceans (such as copepods, euphausiids and shrimps) and chaetognaths. Its diets included small quantities of small squids. T. lepturus showed ontogenetic progression of three feeding stages : an initial feeding stage was a planktivorous stage in which copepods were the major food item, followed by a mixed feeding stage in which euphausiids, mysids, shrimps, chaetognaths and fishes were the major food items, and finally a piscivorous stage in which fishes were the major food item. Especially anchovies were heavily selected by large T. lepturus.

  • Diel changes in feeding activity of juvenile Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii were investigated throughout the analysis of stomach contents of 301 fishes collected from the southeastern coast of Korea. Fish samples were collected every 3 hour over a 24 h period in summer using small bottom trawl. The ratio of empty stomach, stomach fullness, stomach contents index (SCI) and stomach fullness index (IF) of juvenile C. pallasii were varied markedly with day/night changes. The ratio of empty stomach tended be higher during nighttime, while the other values were higher at daytime, with showing peak before sunset. During daytime, the stomach contents mainly were made up of copepods and euphausiids, while the diets at midnight were composed of nearly digested and unidentifiable items.

  • We analyzed the diet composition of smallmouth argentine Argentina kagoshimae, which were collected via bottom trawl in the South Sea during February, April, August, and October 2021. Their size range was 8.1-21.4 cm total length. A. kagoshimae are mesopelagic carnivores, mainly consuming benthopelagic Euphausiacea and Caridea crustaceans. Polychaetes were the second largest prey component in their diet, which also included small quantities of copepods, amphipods, and arrow worms. Stomach content compositions substantially differed among body size levels in A. kagoshimae. The results of non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination and permutational multivariate analysis of variance of dietary data revealed no significant dietary differences. The results of a graphical analysis of the diet composition showed that A. kagoshimae are specialized feeders characterized by strong individual feeding specialization.

  • The feeding habits of sandfish, Arctoscopus japonicus were studied by examining the stomach contents of 2,115 specimens collected between April 2003 and March 2004 in the East Sea of Korea. The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 9.8 to 22.9 cm. The main prey items of A. japonicus were amphipods, mysids, cephalopods and fishes. They showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Individuals of small size (9~16 cm, SL) fed mainly on small prey organisms such as mysids and amphipods. However, more cephalopods and fishes were consumed with increasing fish size (16~23 cm, SL).

  • The feeding habits of john dory, $Zeus$ $faber$, were studied using 462 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Geomun-do, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 7.8 to 40.2cm in standard length (SL). $Z.$ $faber$ was a piscivore that consumes mainly teleosts such as $Trichiurus$ $lepturus$, $Scomber$ $japonicus$, $Callanthias$ $japonicus$ and $Trachurus$ $japonicus$. Of the fish species $T.$ $lepturus$ was the most preferred prey. Its diet also includes cephalopods, shrimps and euphausia. Smaller individuals (<15 cm SL) fed mainly on fishes and cephalopods. The proportion of cephalopods decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fishes gradually increased. Fishes accounted for almost stomach contents of larger individuals (more than 15 cm SL).

  • This study was conducted to develop functional soybean paste with krill (Euphausiacea) as compared to a conventional soybean paste (S1). Soybean containing 10%, 20% and 30% (w/w) krill (S2~S4, respectively) was prepared and quality characteristics (moisture, crude fat, crude protein, ash, reducing sugar, pH, titratable acidity, total acidity and buffering power) were assessed during fermentation for 150 days. As well, antioxidative activities of krill soybean paste were compared to those of control soybean paste based on total phenolic compound content and free radical scavenging activity, including the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) scavenging activity and the thiobarbituric acid value (TBA value). The moisture content of all samples decreased to 41.91~53.47% during fermentation, while the crude fat increased to 1.98~5.21% with increasing addition of krill. Additionally, crude protein increased slightly to 8.24~14.08% with increasing addition of krill after 120 days of fermentation. Ash content was 15.96~18.92%. The reducing sugar content of S2, S3 and S4 was higher than those of S1 with increasing length of fermentation. S2, S3, and S4 displayed progressive decreases in pH and progressive increases in titratable acidity compared to S1. The total acidity of all samples was increased, while the buffering power was decreased with increasing fermentation. Especially, the buffering power of S1 was lower than that of S2, S3 and S4. DPPH radical scavenging activity of lipophilic extracts from S2, S3 and S4 was slightly higher than those of S1. However, the radical scavenging activity of hydrophilic extracts from all samples had similar tendencies, regardless of the krill content or fermentation period. Total phenolics increased with increasing fermentation time and TBA value increased with increasing fermentation time and krill content.

  • The feeding habits of jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus, collected from the Nakdong River estuary from February 1987 to January 1988 were studied. Jack mackerel(4~15cm SL) was a planktivore which fed mainly on copepods, amphipods and mysids. Its diets included small quantities of decapods, euphausiids, polychaetes, chaetognaths and fish larvae. Paracalanus parvus. Acartia clausi and Calanus sinicus were the three most abundant copepod species found in the stomach contents of jack mackerel. Jack mackerel showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals of the fish(4~7cm SL) preyed heavily on copepods. However, the portion of copepods in stomach contents decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease was compensated by an increased consumption of amphipods and mysids.

  • The feeding habits of juvenile and young Seriola quinqueradiata, which were collected by a hand net and set net in coastal waters of the South Sea during the period from June to August 2014 and 2015, were analyzed. The size range of juveniles was 4.9-10.9 cm FL, and that of young S. quinqueradiata was 11.0-20.4 cm FL. Important prey items in the diets of juveniles were euphausiacea and copepoda, dominated by the Euphausia sp., Paracalanus sp. and Calanus sinicus while the diets of the young consisted mainly of pisces, dominated by Engraulis japonicus, Trachurus japonicus. Stomach content compositions differed significantly among body size levels in both the juveniles and young (ANOSIM, P<0.05). With increasing size, the mN/ST constantly decreased while the mW/ST constantly increased (one-way ANOVA). Graphical analysis of the diet composition showed that juvenile S. quinqueradiata are generalized feeders, young is a specialized feeders characterized by strong individual feeding specialization.
