  • The Eunsan gold mine, together with similar nearby prospects, is situated near the centre of the ‘Wusuyeong’ 1:50000 Scale Geological Quadrangle, an area largely underlain by a thick sequence of non-marine Cretaceous strata. The sequence, several kilometres thick, comprises basaltic and andesitic lavas and tuffs, intercalated with fluvial and lacustrine sediments, passing upwards into a further thick volcanic sequence of predominantly dacitic and rhyolitic composition.   • Epithermal deposits are an important class of hydrothermal deposits, that have recently seen an surge of exploration and research, principally as significant resources of gold and silver. Epithermal deposits form at shallow depths (surface to 1-2km) and temperatures less than 30$0^{\circ}C$ (Hayba et al., 1985), and encompass a variety of low-sulfidation (near-neutral pH, reduced fluid; LS) and high-sulfidation (acidic and oxidized fluid; HS) deposits (Sillitoe, 1993; White and Hedenquist, 1995).   • There has been a growing interest for the use of natural fibers in composite applications due to their low cost, environmental friendliness, and good mechanical properties. It was demonstrated to determine the characteristic of tensile behaviors under the variation of test temperature on sisal fiber reinforced polymer composites by RTM process. Especially, the permanganate-treated-fibers improved tensile strength by increasing the coherence with matrix. Material deformation is restricted to increment of cohesion for surface treatment of fiber and then elongation decreas.

  • The experimental forest of Cbungnam National University is located in Naryung-Ri, Eunsan-Myen, Buyeo-Gun, Chungcheongnamdo. The climax vegetations of Quercus species grown in centrual temperate zone are supposed to be destroyed before pure pine stands as a semi-climax vegetation are established on the southern aspect and along the ridges. Variability of vegetations is rather high and dominant species are such as Pinus densiflora, Quercus acutissima, Quercus variabilis, Quercus aliena, Quercus serrata, Lindera erythrocarpa, Platycarya strobilacea, and so on. There tare 203 woody plants and 128 herbal plants. According to the use of vegetations they can be classified as follows; 60 familia and 154 species for edible source, 63 familia and 143 species for medicinal, 51 familia and 140 species for forage, 32 familia and 78 species for ornamental, and 12 familia and 27 species for timber source.

Tolerance Expression of Maize Genotypes to Exserohilum turcicum in North and South Korea

  • Northern corn leaf blight caused by Exserohilum turcicum Pass is considered the most important disease infecting corn (Zea mays L.) in the Peoples' Republic of Korea (North Korea). It contributes to the food shortage in North Korea. The objectives of the current research were to study resistance expression and responses of corn crosses made between ten hybrids from North Korea and inbreeding lines ($S_{3-4}$ stage) from the Republic of Korea (South Korea). The experiments were conducted in six trials with a total of 184 crosses including two commercial hybrids in each trial. The trials were conducted at two locations in North Korea (Mirim and Eunsan) and one location in South Korea (Gunwi) under natural infestation of E. turcicum. Host plant responses were rated on a scale of 1 (highly tolerant) to 9 (highly susceptible). A total of 111 crosses (62.4%) showed significant tolerant or susceptible response variations among three locations; 42 crosses (22.8%) at two locations and 69 crosses (39.0%) at one location, respectively. At least 8 crosses of high level of tolerance and 12 crosses of high level of susceptibility showed significantly different biotic responses (P = 0.05). The results of the current study and historical reviews of E. turcicum epidemics in both North and South Korea suggest that breeding of tolerance with quantitatively inherited genes should be carried out for a sustainable corn production in North Korea.

Effects of hallux valgus angle on one-legged stance and gait parameters in young adults: a preliminary study

  • Objective: Hallux valgus (HV) is a common musculoskeletal deformity that is accompanied with pain and continues to decrease one's quality of life and ability to perform daily life activities by affecting gait and static stability. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of the angle of HV (HVA) and to compare the one-legged stance and gait parameters in young adults with less HV and severe HV. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Forty young adults were divided into two groups, where HVA ≥15° (n=20) was defined as HV, and HVA <15° (n=20) was defined as normal. For balance ability, the center of pressure (COP) path, velocity, length of axis of the COP path, deviation of the x-axis and y-axis, and percentage of foot pressure were measured, and gait, the foot rotation angle, step length, percentage of each phase of the gait cycle, time change from the heel to forefoot, and maximum pressure of the forefoot and midfoot were measured. Results: Significant differences were found in sway length and time change from heel to forefoot during walking between the normal and HV groups (p<0.05). Most parameters were not associated with the HVA, but parameters such as length of axis and time to change from heel to forefoot were significantly associated with the HVA (p<0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that most one-legged stance and gait parameters were not significantly affected by the HVA in young adults; therefore, future studies are needed in order to address other dynamic parameters and other methods of gait analysis for detecting clinically meaningful conditions.

Exploring the Moderating Effect of Big Five Personality Traits on the Relationship between Alexithymia and Depression (감정표현불능증과 우울의 관계에서 성격 5요인의 조절효과 탐색)

  • Previous studies on emotion have repeatedly suggested that alexithymia is an important predictor of depression. Therefore, this study examined whether the relationship between these two variables can be moderated by personality factors, focusing on the Big five personality traits. An online survey of 312 college students, including alexithymia, depression, and Big five personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Openness to Experience) was conducted. As the results, as expected, alexithymia predicted depression, which was in line with the existing research flow. In addition, moderation analysis revealed that agreeableness, emotional stability, and openness to experience moderated the relationship between alexithymia and depression, while extraversion and conscientiousness did not. This study has an important implication in that it discriminated which specific personality traits function as moderators in the process of increasing depression due to alexithymia.
