The prestress force effect on the fundamental frequency and deflection shape of Prestressed Concrete I (PCI) beams was studied in this paper. Currently, due to the conflicts among existing theories, the analytical solution for properly considering the structural behavior of these prestressed members is not clear. A series of experiments were conducted on a large-scale PCI beam of high strength concrete with an eccentric straight unbonded tendon. Specifically, the simply supported PCI beam was subjected to free vibration and three-point bending tests with different prestress forces. Subsequently, the experimental data were compared with analytical results based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. It was proved that the fundamental frequency of PCI beams is unaffected by the increasing applied prestress force, if the variation of the initial elastic modulus of concrete with time is considered. Vice versa, the relationship between the deflection shape and prestress force is well described by the magnification factor formula of the compression-softening theory assuming the secant elastic modulus.
This article presents a unified mathematical model to investigate free and forced vibration responses of perforated thin and thick beams. Analytical models of the equivalent geometrical and material characteristics for regularly squared perforated beam are developed. Because of the shear deformation regime increasing in perforated structures, the investigation of dynamical behaviors of these structures becomes more complicated and effects of rotary inertia and shear deformation should be considered. So, both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories are proposed for thin and short (thick) beams, respectively. Mathematical closed forms for the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors as well as the forced vibration time response are derived. The validity of the developed analytical procedure is verified by comparing the obtained results with both analytical and numerical analyses and good agreement is detected. Numerical studies are presented to illustrate effects of beam slenderness ratio, filling ratio, as well as the number of holes on the dynamic behavior of perforated beams. The obtained results and concluding remarks are helpful in mechanical design and industrial applications of large devices and small systems (MEMS) based on perforated structure.

A three dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of deep, tapered rods and beams with circular cross section. Unlike conventional rod and beam theories, which are mathematically one-dimensional (1-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components u/sup r/, u/sub θ/ and u/sub z/, in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in , and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the rods and beams are formulated, the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the rods and beams. Novel numerical results are tabulated for nine different tapered rods and beams with linear, quadratic, and cubic variations of radial thickness in the axial direction using the 3D theory. Comparisons are also made with results for linearly tapered beams from 1-D classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory.

Weight optimization was performed for a rotorcraft shaft system using one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli beam elements. Torsion, shaft support stiffness such as bearings, flange mass are all considered. To guarantee structural dynamic stability, eigenvalue analysis was performed to avoid critical speed and tooth mesh excitation form the gearbox. The weight optimization was performed by adjusting the thickness and radius while the length of the shaft was fixed, and the optimization process was divided into two stages. In the first, the weight is optimized with the torsional strength constraint. In the second, the difference between the primary mode of shaft and the critical speed is maximized so that the primary mode of the shaft can avoid the critical speed while the constraint on the torsional strength of the shaft is satisfied according to the standard for shaft system stability (AMC P 706-201, 1974). The proposed method was verified by comparing the results of the optimal design using the given one-dimensional beam elements with the stress results of the 3D finite element and the actual manufactured shaft.

A long and light-weight forearm of the vertical 2 DOF robot manipulator with a heavy payload driven by parallel drive mechanism is modelled as a Euler-Bernoulli beam with a tip mass subjected to a high speed rotation. Governing equation is obtained by Hamilton's principle and represented as state variable form using the perturbed variables which describe the perturbed errors at the manipulator's final configuration. Digitial optimal control and observer theory are used to suppress the forearm vibration and control the positions of the joint angles with measured/estimated state feedback. Computer simulations and experimental results are obtained and compared each other.
In the current paper, the nonlinear resonance response of functionally graded graphene platelet reinforced (FG-GPLRC) beams by considering different boundary conditions is investigated using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Four different graphene platelets (GPLs) distributions including UD and FG-O, FG-X, and FG-A are considered and the effective material parameters are calculated by Halpin-Tsai model. The nonlinear vibration equations are derived by Euler-Lagrange principle. Then the perturbation method is used to discretize the motion equations, and the loadings and displacement are all expanded, so as to obtain the first to third order perturbation equations, and then the asymptotic solution of the equations can be obtained. Then the nonlinear amplitude-frequency response is obtained with the help of the modified Lindstedt-Poincare method (Chen and Cheung 1996). Finally, the influences of the distribution types of GPLs, total GPLs layers, GPLs weight fraction, elastic foundations and boundary conditions on the resonance problems are comprehensively studied. Results show that the distribution types of GPLs, total GPLs layers, GPLs weight fraction, elastic foundations and boundary conditions have a significant effect on the nonlinear resonance response of FG-GPLRC beams.
Flexible behaviors in new aerospace structures can lead to a degradation of their control and guidance system and undesired performance. The objectives of the current work are to analyze the vibration resulting from the propulsion force on a Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) launch vehicle (LV). This is modeled as a follower force on a free-free Euler-Bernoulli beam consisting of two concentrated masses at the two free ends. Once the effects on the oscillation of the actuators are studied, a solution to reduce these oscillations will also be developed. To pursue this goal, the stability of the beam model is studied using Ritz method. It is determined that the transverse and rotary inertia of the concentrated masses cause a change in the critical follower force. A new dynamic model and an adaptive control system for an SSTO LV have been developed that allow the aerospace structure to run on its maximum bearable propulsion force with the optimum effects on the oscillation of its actuators. Simulation results show that such a control model provides an effective way to reduce the undesirable oscillations of the actuators.
This article presented a nanoscale modified continuum model to investigate the free vibration of functionally graded (FG) porous nanobeam by using finite element method. The main novelty of this manuscript is presenting effects of four different porosity models on vibration behaviors of nonlocal nanobeam structure including size effect, that not be discussed before The proposed porosity models are, uniform porosity distribution, symmetric with mid-plane, bottom surface distribution and top surface distribution. The nano-scale effect is included in modified model by using the differential nonlocal continuum theory of Eringen that adding the length scale into the constitutive equations as a material parameter constant. The graded material is distributed through the beam thickness by a generalized power law function. The beam is simply supported, and it is assumed to be thin. Therefore, the kinematic assumptions of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory are held. The mathematical model is solved numerically using the finite element method. Results demonstrate effects of porosity type, material gradation, and nanoscale parameters on the free vibration of nanobeam. The proposed model is effective in vibration analysis of NEMS structure manufactured by porous functionally graded materials.
The beam structure with breathing cracks subjected to harmonic excitations was modeled by FEM based on Euler-Bernoulli theory, and a piecewise dynamical system was deduced. The precise integration method (PIM) was employed to propose an algorithm for analyzing the dynamic responses of the deduced system. This system was first divided into linear sub-systems, between which there are switching points resulted from the breathing cracks. The inhomogeneous terms due to the external excitations were tackled by introducing auxiliary variables to express the harmonic functions, hence the sub-systems are homogeneous. The PIM was then applied to solve the homogeneous sub-systems one by one. During the procedures, a predictor-corrector algorithm was presented to determine the switching points accurately. The presented method can provide solutions with an accuracy to a magnitude of $10^{-12}$ compared with exact solutions obtained by the theories of ordinary differential equations. The PIM results are much more accurate than Newmark ones with the same time step. Moreover, it is found that the PIM can maintain a high level of accuracy even when the time step increases within a relatively wide range.

In this article, a novel simple higher-order shear deformation theory for bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) beams is proposed. The beauty of this theory relies on its 2-unknowns displacement field as the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, which is even less than the Timoshenko beam theory. A shear correction factor is, therefore, not needed. Equations of motion are obtained via Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and free vibration analysis are given for simply supported beams. Efficacy of the proposed model is shown through illustrative examples for bending and dynamic of FG beams. The numerical results obtained are compared with those of other higher-order shear deformation beam theory results. The results obtained are found to be accurate.
