SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) drives require the accurate position information of the rotor. These informations are generally provided by a tacho generator or digital shaft-position encoder These speed sensors lower the system reliability and require special attention to noise. This paper describes a new approach to estimating SRM speed from measured terminal voltages and currents for speed sensorless control. The described method is based on the sliding mode observer. The rotor speed and position observers are estimated by the adaptation law using the real and estimated currents. However, the conventional adaptive sliding mode observer based on the variable structure control theory has some disadvantages that the estimated values including the high-frequency chattering and the steady state error generated due to the infinite feedback gain chosen and the discontinuous control input. To reduce the chattering and steady state error, an integrator is also inserted in the sliding mode observer strategy. The described adaptive sliding mode observer decreases the vibration to the switching hyper-plane of the sliding mode by adding integrator. The described methodology incorporates the Lyapunov algorithm to drive the rotor speed and the stator resistance such that it can overcome the problem of sensitivity in the face of SRM parameter variation. Also, without any mechanical information. The rotor speed of SRM is obtained form adaptive scheme. The described method is verified through the simulation and experiment.

In the moving target problem, the velocity information of the moving target is very important as well as the high accuracy position information. To solve this problem, active researches are being conducted recently with combine the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) and Frequency Delay of Arrival(FDOA) measurements. However, since the FDOA measurement is utilizing the Doppler effect due to the relative velocity between the target source and the receiver sensor, it may be difficult to use the FDOA measurement if the moving target speed is not sufficiently fast. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the position and the velocities of the target by using only the TDOA measurements for the low speed moving target in the indoor environment with sensor network. First, the target position and heading angle are obtained from the estimated positions of two attached transmitters on the target. Then, the target angular and linear velocities are also estimated. In addtion, we apply the Instrumental Variable (IV) technique to compensate the estimation error of the estimated target velocity. In simulation, the performance of the proposed algorithm is verified.

This paper proposed a novel high performance sensorless control scheme for IPMSM based on an extended nonlinear state observer. The gain-matrix of the observer has been derived by using state linearization method. Steady state errors in estimated rotor position and speed due to parameter inaccuracy have been analyzed, and an equivalent flux error is defined to represent the overall effect of parameter errors contributing to the wrong convergence of the estimated rotor speed as well as rotor position. Then, an online compensation strategy was proposed to limit the estimation errors in rotor position and speed. The effectiveness of the extended nonlinear state observer is validated through simulation and experimental test.

In this paper, for the accurate estimation of the position and orientation of the UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle), an AHRS (Attitude Heading Reference System) was developed using the IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensor which provides information on acceleration and orientation in the object coordinate and the initial alignment algorithm and the E-KF (extended Kalman Filter). The initial position and orientation of the UUV are estimated using the initial alignment algorithm with 3-axis acceleration and geomagnetic information of the IMU sensor. The position and orientation of the UUV are estimated using the AHRS composed of 3-axis acceleration, velocity, and geomagnetic information and the E-KF. For the performance test of the orientation estimation of the AHRS, a testbed using IMU sensor(ADIS16405) and DSP28335 coded with an E-KF algorithm was developed and its performance was verified through tests.

This paper proposes a sensorless vector control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) using a reduced order observer. This method introduce the auxiliary control inputs that can eliminate the nonlinear term in the electrical equations and realize the linearization of the motor model. The rotor speed estimate with the observer that needs only the q-axis current. The rotor position calculate using the estimated rotor speed. The speed and position control implement with the estimated value. The validity of the proposed scheme is confirmed by various response characteristics.

This paper proposes a novel current-sensorless maximum torque per ampere control for a surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with low-resolution position sensor. A direct axis current is estimated from the mathematical model of the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the phase angle between direct and quadrature axis voltage commands is controlled to adjust the estimated direct axis current to zero, thus a maximum torque per ampere control can be achieved. The proposed method is suitable for low cost applications with slow dynamic response characteristics.

An inertial navigation system for pedestrian position tracking is proposed, where the position is computed using inertial sensors mounted on shoes. Inertial navigation system(INS) errors increase with time due to inertial sensor errors, and therefore it needs to reset errors frequently. During normal walking, there is an almost periodic zero velocity instance when a foot touches the floor. Using this fact, estimation errors are reduced and this method is called the zero velocity updating algorithm. When implementing this zero velocity updating algorithm, it is important to know when is the zero velocity interval. The gait states are modeled as a Markov process and each state is estimated using the hidden Markov model smoother. With this gait estimation, the zero or nearly zero velocity interval is more accurately estimated, which helps to reduce the position estimation error.
This paper presents a satellite relative navigation strategy for formation flying, which chooses an appropriate navigation algorithm according to the operating environment. Not only global positioning system (GPS) measurements, but laser measurements can also be utilized to determine the relative positions of satellites. Laser data is used solely or together with GPS measurements. Numerical simulations were conducted to compare the relative navigation algorithm using only laser data and laser data combined with GPS data. If an accurate direction of laser pointing is estimated, the relative position of satellites can be determined using only laser measurements. If not, the combined algorithm has better performance, and is irrelevant to the precision of the relative angle data between two satellites in spherical coordinates. Within 10 km relative distance between satellites, relative navigation using double difference GPS data makes more precise relative position estimation results. If the simulation results are applied to the relative navigation strategy, the proper algorithm can be chosen, and the relative position of satellites can be estimated precisely in changing mission environments.
Image scaling is used for a variety of real-life applications. In order to evaluate the performance of transform functions, the image quality are compared together before and after processing. For the objective evaluation of the transform functions, the exact criterion of image quality is required, and various aspects approaches are practically performed. However, few researches have been conducted on image quality measurement considering the position of pixels that are skipped or newly generated in the process of the image scaling. Therefore this paper focuses on the objective image quality measurement for positions of skipped or estimated pixels in the image scaling. The proposed method generated new image quality measure considering the positional changes using a conventional measure and evaluated sensitivity about positional changes. Through this experiments, it is observed that conventional image quality measurement is definitely affected by positional changes of a skipped and estimated pixels. It is also confirmed that the proposed method is an objective criterion to represent image quality for positional changes of skipped or estimated pixels. The proposed method can be used as a criterion to evaluate the performance of image restoration or enhancement functions.

An real-time active beacon localization system for mobile robots is developed and implemented. This system permits the estimation of robot positions when detecting light sources by PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) sensor which are placed sparsely over the robots work space as beacons(or landmarks). An LSE(Least Square Estimation) method is introduced to calibrate the internal parameters of a model for the beacon and robot position. The proposed system has two operational modes of position estimation. One is the initial position calculation by the detection of two or more light sources positions of which are known. The other is the continuous position compensation that calculates the position and heading of the robot using the IEKF(Iterated Extended Kalman Filter) applied to the beacon and dead-reckoning data. Practical experiments show that the estimated position obtained by this system is precise enough to be useful for the navigation of robots.
