Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTS) are rare, but potentially aggressive tumors. GISTS are generally found in the stomach or small intestine and less commonly in the colon, rectum, or an intra-abdominal sites but have rarely been documented in the esophagus. GISTS were definded as the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract for which there is incomplete understanding of their lineage, while their relationship with differenciated. We reported a very rare case of GISTS of lower esophagus in a 60-year-old woman with relevant literature review.
A 56 years old woman referred to our hospital with dysphagia and epigastric soreness. Gastroendoscopy revealed huge submucosal tumor with ulceration extending from distal esophagus to lesser curvature of stomach. Subsequent computed tomography(CT) demonstrated soft tissue mass encircling distal esophagus, and 18F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated intense $^{18}F-FDG$ accumulation in it. Finally this case was diagnosed as esophageal leiomyoma based on pathologic evaluation of the surgical specimen.

Rupture of the esophagus after blunt trauma is a rare event. But any type of esophageal rupture has the high morbidity and mortality rate. In these situations, the sign and symptom of the esophageal rupture is subtle and nonspecific; therefore, the physicians are usually not suspicious. Delaying in diagnosis prevents proper treatment (surgical or non-surgical) before significant complications occurred. We report a case of a cervical esophageal perforation with primary repair and drainage after blunt trauma.
Postemetic rupture of the esophagus is an intrathoracic catastrophe which is universally fatal if untreated immediately. We have experienced one case of Boerhaave`s syndrome at the Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery Yonsei University College of Medicine. He was 56 years old male who complained severe chest-pain, dyspnea with sudden vomiting after alcohol. Esophagogram showed barium leakage through rupture site on lower esophagus into left thoracic cavity. He had taken repair of the rupture site of lower esophagus and wrapping it with the body of the stomach wall because of relatively clean rupture margin even though 48 hours following the rupture. He has been uneventful in post-operative courses & he discharged with good conditions.
Between 1994 to 1998, 7 patients had taken emergency operations by iatrogenic esophageal perforation. To evaluate patterns of injury, clinical presentation, and treatment options for patients, we reviewed all the 7 patients who had gotten transmural injury to the esophagus during dilatations or stenting procedures at our hospital. The primary diagnosis of the patients were as followings , two were achalagia and remaining five were corrosive esophageal strictures. Chest pain, fever, tachycardia were the early signs after esophageal perforation. The sites of perforation were thoracic esophagus in all cases and all of them underwent operation within 8 hours of initial injury. There were no postoperative mortality. Complications were developed three cases: stricture of anastomotic site, mediastinitis due to graft failure of colon and pleural empyema.
Foreign body in esophagus is not uncommon in the field of otolaryngology. There are many reports about it with recent advanced development of esophagobronchology. The authors have recently experienced an interesting case of foreign body retained in second constrictor portion of esophagus, which had been perforated the anterior wall of esophagus and then pierce the trachea.
Foreign bodies in the esophagus are frequently seen in the otolaryngologic field and there are numerous reports of them. Also the kinds of these foreign bodies are valiable and almost all things arround us are likely to be foreign bodies. Authors have recently experienced three cases of rare and interesting foreign bodies in the esophagus. Foreign bodies were removed by endoscopy and all of these were sharp square shaped hard plastic package which enclosing tablet of medicine. This is the report of clinical findings on these cases along with literature review.
Primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus(PMME) is an extremely rare tumor with only scattered case reports. The treatment of choice is surgical resection. However, the prognosis is poor. Recently we experienced one case of primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus in a 60-year-old male patient. Esophagectomy and intrathoracic esophagogastrostomy were perfomed. The patient was discharged without specific complications.

Neurogenic tumors are the most prevalent tumors of the mediastinum, and schwannomas are the most common type of neurogenic tumor. Primary neurogenic neoplasm of the esophagus is uncommon and malignant schwannoma of the esophagus is extremely rare. We report a case of a 27-year-old female presenting with dysphagia and palpitations who was found to have a lobulated tumor in the mediastinum that was compressing the esophageal lumen. The tumor was successfully treated surgically without recurrence. The final diagnosis, on histopathological examination of the specimen, was malignant schwannoma.
Double primary cancer is a rare disease in which two cancers occur in an individual independently. As prolonged survival of patients with malignant tumors is expected in the future due to advances in methods of treatment, the chance of double primary cancer will be increased. We experienced one case of double primary cancer which was developed in esophagus and chest wall. A 72 year-old male visited our hospital complaining of epigastric discomfort and right chest wall mass. We studied esophagus, chest wall, and other organs including gastrointestinal tract by various methods to exclude the cancer of other sites and could diagnose squamous cell carcinoma of mid-esophagus and adenocarcinoma of chest wall. The patient underwent esophagogastrostomy following esophagectomy and wide-resection of chest wall tumor. The postoperative course was uneventful.
