In this work, we propose a multi-hypothesis error concealment algorithm, which replaces a lost block with a weighted superposition of more than two reference blocks in previous frames. Three methods are developed to find the set of reference blocks and determine the weighting coefficients. These methods are implemented based on H.26L standard, and their performances are evaluated. It is shown that the proposed multi-hypothesis algorithm provides up to 1.5㏈ better PSNR performance than the conventional single-hypothesis concealment algorithm.
In network delivery of compressed video, packets may be lost if the channel is unreliable like Internet. Such losses tend to of cur in burst like continuous bit-stream error. In this paper, we propose an effective error-concealment approach to which an error resilient video encoding approach is applied against burst errors and which reduces a complexity of error concealment at the decoder using data hiding. To improve the performance of error concealment, a temporal and spatial error resilient video encoding approach at encoder is developed to be robust against burst errors. For spatial area of error concealment, block shuffling scheme is introduced to isolate erroneous blocks caused by packet losses. For temporal area of error concealment, we embed parity bits in content data for motion vectors between intra frames or continuous inter frames and recovery loss packet with it at decoder after transmission While error concealment is performed on error blocks of video data at decoder, it is computationally costly to interpolate error video block using neighboring information. So, in this paper, a set of feature are extracted at the encoder and embedded imperceptibly into the original media. If some part of the media data is damaged during transmission, the embedded features can be extracted and used for recovery of lost data with bi-direction interpolation. The use of data hiding leads to reduced complexity at the decoder. Experimental results suggest that our approach can achieve a reasonable quality for packet loss up to 30% over a wide range of video materials.
This paper presents unequal error protection and error concealment techniques far robust H.263 video transmission over mobile channels. The proposed error protection scheme has three major features. First, it has the capability of preventing the loss of synchronization information in H.263 video stream as much as possible that the H.263 decoder can resynchronize at the next decoding point, if errors are occurred. Secondly, it employs an unequal error protection scheme to support variable coding rates using rate compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes, dividing the encoded stream into two classes. Finally, a macroblock-interleaving scheme is employed in order to minimize the corruption of consecutive macroblocks due to burst errors, which can make a proper condition for error concealment. In addition, to minimize the spatial error propagations due to the variable length codes, a fast resynchronization scheme at the group of block layer is developed for recovering subsequent error-free macroblocks following the damaged macroblock. futhermore, error concealment techniques based on both side match criterion and overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) are employed at the source decoder so that it can not only recover the lost macroblock more accurately, but also reduce blocking artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can be an effective error protection scheme since proper video quality can be maintained under various channel bit error rates.
Error concealment plays an important role in combating transmission errors. Methods of error concealment which produce better quality are generally of higher complexity, thus making some of the more sophisticated algorithms is not suitable for real-time applications. In this paper, we develop temporal and spatial error resilient video encoding and data hiding approach to facilitate the error concealment at the decoder. Block interleaving scheme is introduced to isolate erroneous blocks caused by packet losses for spatial area of error resilience. For temporal area of error resilience, data hiding is applied to the transmission of parity bits to protect motion vectors. To do error concealment quickly, a set of edge features extracted from a block is embedded imperceptibly using data hiding into the host media and transmitted to decoder. If some part of the media data is damaged during transmission, the embedded features are used for concealment of lost data at decoder. This method decreases a complexity of error concealment by reducing the estimation process of lost data from neighbor blocks. The proposed data hiding method of parity bits and block features is not influence much to the complexity of standard encoder. Experimental results show that proposed method conceals properly and effectively burst errors occurred on transmission channel like Internet.

In this paper, an informed watermarking algorithm is proposed that aids in concealing packet loss errors in video communications. This watermark-based error concealment (WEC) method embeds a low resolution version of the video frame inside itself as watermark data. At the receiver, the extracted watermark is used as a reference for error concealment. The proposed DCT-based algorithm employs informed watermarking techniques in order to minimize the distortion of host frames. At the encoder, a predictive feedback loop is employed which helps to adjust the strength of the data embedding. Furthermore, the distortion of the DCT coefficients introduced in the embedding can be removed to a considerable extent, by employing bit-sign adaptivity. Simulation results on standard video sequences show that the proposed informed WEC scheme has an advantage of 3$\sim$4 dB in PSNR over non-informed WEC and that even a non-informed WEC is still superior to conventional error concealment techniques.

In this paper, we propose a new selective temporal error concealment algerian best suited for H.264/AVC. The proposed algorithm performs selective temporal error concealment depending on whether the lost block is at background or foreground. It the corrupted macroblock is decided as at background, then the simple temporal replacement is performed. Also we propose replacing a lost block at foreground with the selective average of respectively estimated blocks from the multiple reference frames. This paper supposes error-corrupted H.264/AVC video bitstreams over CDMA2000 (or UMTS) air interface. It is shown that under Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) coding of H.264/AVC, the proposed algorithm provides PSNR gain up to 1.18dB compared to built-in algorithm in the K264/AVC test model. In addition, the proposed error concealment method has average PSNR improvement of 0.33dB compared with that under N-slice coding mode. The proposed algorithm also provides better subjective video quality than other conventional error concealment algorithms.

Most video services are transmitted in wireless networks. In a network environment, a packet of video is likely to be lost during transmission. For this reason, numerous error concealment (EC) algorithms have been proposed to combat channel errors. On the other hand, most existing algorithms cannot conceal the whole missing frame effectively. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a new Adaptive Prediction Unit-based Motion Vector Extrapolation (APMVE) algorithm to restore the entire missing frame encoded by High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). In each missing HEVC frame, it uses the prediction unit (PU) information of the previous frame to adaptively decide the size of a basic unit for error concealment and to provide a more accurate estimation for the motion vector in that basic unit than can be achieved by any other conventional method. The simulation results showed that it is highly effective and significantly outperforms other existing frame recovery methods in terms of both objective and subjective quality.
This paper proposes a spatio-temporal correlation algorithm that takes advantage of the spatial and temporal correlations in video streams for error concealment. The spatio-temporal correlation algorithm sets the neighborhood area of the damaged part as a reference window, then finds the area that best matches the reference window in the previous frame. The best-matched area in the previous frame replaces the damaged part in the current frame. The results of ten variations of the proposed algorithm are compared with conventional error concealment methods. These methods include the ones applicable to P-frames as well as I-frames. The comparison results show that the proposed algorithm is very efficient for l-frame error concealment with a large motion between frames.

The error concealment is very useful technique for real-time communication, such as video conference. In this paper. we propose the error concealment technique to minimize discontinuity of block boundary in consideration of the fact that human visual system is sensitive to discontinuity. The error concealment for each loss block is performed by extended block matching method based on gradient difference. In the simulation result, performance improvement for the proposed technique is on the average 1.32㏈ in comparison with the conventional technique.
In this paper, a new error concealment algorithm is proposed for the H.264 standard. The algorithm consists of two processes. The first process uses a fuzzy logic method to select the size type of lost blocks. The motion vector of a lost block is calculated from the current frame, if the motion vectors of the neighboring blocks surrounding the lost block are discontinuous. Otherwise, the size type of the lost block can be determined from the preceding frame. The second process is an error concealment algorithm via a proposed adapted multiple-reference-frames selection for finding the lost motion vector. The adapted multiple-reference-frames selection is based on the motion estimation analysis of H.264 coding so that the number of searched frames can be reduced. Therefore the most accurate mode of the lost block can be determined with much less computation time in the selection of the lost motion vector. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves from 0.5 to 4.52 dB improvement when compared to the method in VM 9.0.
