  • The pipelines are apt to erosion or corrosion because of the high-speed flow of water and steam with high temperatures or high pressures. This study was carried out a finite element analysis (FEA) and an experimental for the fracture behavior of T-joint pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion and corrosion of the metal. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.963 and an eroded length of l=25 mm, 50 mm, and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using FEA, which accurately simulates failure behaviors. In regards to the relationship between pressure and eroded, the criterion that indicates what can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from FEA. The FEA results were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.

  • This study on the effects of local wall-thinned location on the fracture behavior of pipes was carried out, and the results were compared with the analytical results. Local wall-thinning for the bending test was machined with various sizes on the outside of pipes, in order to simulate the metal loss, due to erosion/corrosion. In addition, we had carried out FE analysis for the pipes with local wall thinning on the inside, and its results were comparatively studied with that of the outside. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors of inner or outer wall thinning. Fracture types, obtained from the experiments and analyses, could be classified into ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation, depending on the thinned length and thinned ratio. Based on the results, the fracture behaviors of pipes with the outer wall thinning can be applied to estimate the fracture behaviors of pipes with the inner wall thinning.

  • In 2015, a fin tube (Cu-Ni 70/30 alloy) of package type heat exchanger for navy vessel was perforated through the wall which led to refrigerant leakage. This failure occurred after only one year since its installation. In this study, cause of the failure was determined based on available documents, metallographic studies and computational fluid dynamics simulation conducted on this fin tube. The results showed that dimensional gap between inserted plastic tube and inside wall of fin tube is the cause of the swirling turbulent stream of sea water. As a result of combination of swirling turbulence and continuing collision of hard solid particles in sea water, erosion corrosion has begun at the end of inserted plastic tube area. Crevice corrosion followed later in the crevice between the outer wall of plastic tube and inner wall of fin tube. It was found that other remaining tubes also showed the same corrosion phenomena. Thorough inspection and prompt replacement will have to be accomplished for the fin tubes of the same model heat exchanger.

  • In this study, the material used in the hot dip galvanizing equipment was poorly corrosion-resistant, so it was performed to solve the cost and time problems caused by equipment replacement. The theoretical calculation was performed using the DV-Xα method(Discrete Variational Local-density approximation method). The alloy (STS4XX series) of the equipment currently used has a martensite phase. Therefore, the theoretical calculation was performed by applying P4 / mmm, which is a tetragonal structure. The new alloy was chosen by designing theoretical values close to existing materials. Considering elements that contribute to corrosion, most have high prices. Therefore, the design was completed by adjusting the content using only the components of the reference material in the theoretical design. The final design alloys were chosen as D6 and D9. Designed D6 and D9 were dissolved and prepared using an induction furnace. After the heat treatment process was completed, the corrosion rate of the alloys was confirmed by using the potentiodynamic polarization test. The surface of the prepared alloys were processed horizontally and then polished to # 1200 using sand paper to perform potentiodynamic polarization test. Domestic products: 4.735 mpy (mils / year), D6: 0.9166 mpy, D9: 0.3372 mpy, alloys designed than domestic products had a lower corrosion rate. Therefore, the designed alloy was expected to have better erosion resistance.

  • Most of sewage in our country has been made by concrete, and currently they shows gradual deterioration. One of serious problems happened in the sewage is a corrosion of sewage itself. Namely, biochemical corrosion is the most important one. Deterioration phenomenon in concrete used in sewage is occurred by environment condition of sewage, such as erosion by the acid, erosion by sulfate, corrosion by carbonation and so on several factors. However, at present, investigation data on durability of Kangnung city sewage is not sufficient. In addition, the prediction of repair time and selection of rehabilitation method is also not easy. Accordingly, in this research, investigation on durability of sewages located in Kangnung city was carried out. It will also supply the basic data for repair and rehabilitation.

  • The grooving corrosion is caused mainly by the different microstructures between the matrix and weld which is formed during the rapid heating and cooling cycle in welding. By this localized corrosion reaction of pipes, it evolves economic problems such as the early damage of industrial facilities and pipe lines of apartment, and water pollution. So lots of researches were carried out already about grooving corrosion mechanism of ERW carbon steel pipe but there is seldom study for water hammer happened by fluid phenomenon and corrosion rate by flow velocity. In this study, the analysis based on hydrodynamic and fracture mechanics was carried out. ANSYS, FLUENT and STAR-CD were used for confirmation of flow phenomenon and stress on the pipe. As the results, fatigue failure is able to be happened by water hammer and grooving corrosion rate is increased cause by turbulent. Grooving corrosion is happened on the pipe, then friction loss of fluid is occurred from corroded part. Erosion can be happened enough in corroded region of microscopic size that wear "V" form. Also pipe is able to be damaged by water hammer effects because of corroded region is general acting as a notch effects. Corrosion depth was more than half of total thickness, it can be damaged from water hammer pressure.

  • One of the useful technologies for light-weightening of components required in the automobile and machine industry is to use high strength materials. To improve material properties, the carbonizing treatment, nitrifying treatment, and shot-peening method are representatively applied. However, the shot-peening method is generally used to remove surface defect on steel and to improve the fatigue strength of the surface. Benefits of shot-peening are increasing resistance against fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, fretting, galling, erosion and closing of pores. In this paper, the effect of shot-peening on the corrosion of SUP-9 steel immersed in a 3.5% NaCl solution and corrosion characteristics from heat treatment during the shot peening process has been investigated. The immersion test was performed on four kinds of specimens. Corrosion potential, the polarization curve, residual stress etc. Were analyzed from the experimental results.

  • The demand for stainless steel is continuously increasing with the development in offshore industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance characteristics. However, it suffers cavitation-erosion in application of high rotating fluid and the damage accelerates in combination with electrochemical corrosion because of Cl-ion in sea water. This paper investigated the complex damage behavior for 431 stainless steel, that is one of martensite stainless steels, through the hybrid test in sea water. Various experiments were carried out, including potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization experiment and Tafel analysis. Surface morphology was observed and damage depth was analyzed by SEM and 3D microscope after each experiment, respectively. The results revealed that more active potential was observed under cavitation condition than static condition due to breakdown of passive film and activation of charge transfer, and that higher corrosion current density was obtained under cavitation condition due to synergistic effect of corrosion and erosion.
