Estrogen receptors (ERs) are steroid receptors located in the cytoplasm and on the nuclear membrane. The sequence similarities of human $ER{\alpha}$, mouse $ER{\alpha}$, rat $ER{\alpha}$, dog $ER{\alpha}$, and cat $ER{\alpha}$ are above 90%, but structures of $ER{\alpha}$ may different among species. Estrogen can be agonist and antagonist depending on its target organs. This hormone play roles in several diseases including breast cancer. There are variety of the relative binding affinity (RBA) of ER and estrogen species in comparison to $17{\beta}-estradiol$ (E2), which is a natural ligand of both $ER{\alpha}$ and $ER{\beta}$. The RBA of the estrogen species are as following: diethyl stilbestrol (DES) > hexestrol > dienestrol > $17{\beta}-estradiol$ (E2) > 17- estradiol > moxestrol > estriol (E3) >4-OH estradiol > estrone-3-sulfate. Estrogen mimetic drugs, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), have been used as hormonal therapy for ER positive breast cancer and postmenopausal osteoporosis. In the postgenomic era, in silico models have become effective tools for modern drug discovery. These provide three dimensional structures of many transmembrane receptors and enzymes, which are important targets of de novo drug development. The estimated inhibition constants (Ki) from computational model have been used as a screening procedure before in vitro and in vivo studies.

We have investigated the optical properties of Erbium (Er)-implanted GaN by photoluminescence (PL). Various doses of Er ion were implanted on GaN epilayers by ion implantation. Visible green emission lines due to inner 4f shell transitions for $Er^{3+}$ were observed from the PL spectrum of Er-implanted GaN. The emission spectrum consists of two narrow green lines at 537 and 558 nm. The green emission lines are identified as $Er^{3+}$ transitions from the $^{5}H_{11/2}$ and $^{4}S_{3/2}$ levels to the $^{4}I_{15/2}$ ground state. The stronger peaks in the case with the dose of $5{\times}10^{14}cm^{-2}$, together with the relatively higher intensity of the $Er^{3+}$ luminescence in the lower doped sample. It implies that some damage remains in the case with the dose of $1{\times}10^{16}cm^{-2}$. The peak positions of emission lines due to inner 4f shell transitions for $Er^{3+}$ do not change with increasing temperature. It indicates that $Er^{3+}$ related emission depends very little on the ambient temperature.
The electrorheological (ER) behavior of suspensions in silicone oil of phosphoric ester cellulose powder (average particle size : 18$\pm$1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) was investigated on the elevated temperature up to 10$0^{\circ}C$. For development of anhydrous ER fluids using at wide temperature range, it should be researched to how the effect of temperature on the ER activities. As a first step, the anhydrous ER suspensions mixing with the phosphoric ester cellulose particles which were made from the phosphoric ester reaction of cellulose were measured. As increasing the temperature, not only the analysis of electrical properties such as dielectric constant current density and electrical conductivity but also the rheological properties of ER fluids were studied. From the experimental results, the temperature had a large influence to the ER properties of anhydrous ER fluids. The current density, conductivity and elecoorheological effect ($\tau$$_{A}$$\tau$$_{0}$) of phosphoric ester cellulose ER fluids were proportional to the temperature with power law. And the shear stress of them was closely related with the square of dielectric constant mismatch parameter ($\beta$$^2$) under constant shear rate and electric field.d.
Phytoestrogens, especially Yak-kong or soybean-derived isoflavones have been traditionally used as a supplement of estrogen for preventing postmemopausal osteoporosis in oriental folk medicine. In our previous study, the treatment of Yak-kong and soybean increased estrogen receptor-a (ERa) expression and proliferation of MG-63 osteoblastic cells. In contrast, the increase of estrogen receptor-$\beta$ (ER$\beta$) expression in proliferating MG-63 cells with Yak-kong and soybean treatment was less pronounced, which suggested that ER$\beta$ may play a role rather in the regulation of bone cell differentiation To determine the role of ER$\beta$ in Yak-kong or soybean mediated regulation of bone cell differentiation, we established MG-63 cell lines stably expressing either ER$\beta$ or antisense ER$\beta$ RNAs. Increased expression of ER$\beta$ did not affect ERa expression and proliferation of MG-63 cells. However, increased expression of ER$\beta$ in MG-63 cells (ER$\beta$-MG63 cells) selectively enhanced Yak-kong or soybean induced expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG), a novel soluble glycoprotein which is secreted from osteoblasts and mediates the signal for osteoclast differentiation. Inhibition of ER$\beta$ expression by antisense ER$\beta$ RNAs (As-ER$\beta$-MG63) caused these cells to insensitize Yak-kong or soybean induced expression of OPG but increased MG-63 cell proliferation. Furthermore, the comparable effects between Yak-kong and the combined treatment of genistein and daidzein at $0.5{\times}l0^{-8}$ M, which is a concentration of these two isoflavones similar to Yak-kong at 0.001 mg/mL, on OPG expression in ER$\beta$-MG63 cell demonstrate that the enhanced expression of OPG with Yak-kong treatment is mediated by the synergistic effect of low leveled isoflavones in the extracts. Together, coupled with low level of ER expression in osteoclasts, our data demonstrate that ER$\beta$ in osteoblasts plays an important role in Yak-kong and soybean mediated inhibition of osteoclast differentiation indirectly by enhancing the expression of OPG.

A Jopock (Jpk), a trans-acting factor associating with the position-specific regulatory element of murine Hoxa-7, has shown to have a toxicity to both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells when overexpressed. Since Jpk protein harbors a transmembrane domain and a putative endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-retention signal at the N-terminus, a subcellular localization of the protein was analyzed after fusing it into the green fluorescent protein (GFP): Both N-term (Jpk-EGFP) and C-term tagged-Jpk (EGFP-Jpk) showed to be localized in the ER when analyzed under the fluorescence microscopy after staining the cells with ER- and MitoTracker. Since ER stress triggers the ER-stress mediated apoptosis to eliminate the damaged cells, we analyzed the expression pattern of Jpk under ER-stress condition. When MCF7 cells were treated with the ER-stress inducer such as DTT and EGTA, the expression of Jpk was upregulated at the transcriptional level like that of Grp78, a molecular chaperone well known to be overexpressed under ER-stress condition. In the presence of high concentration of ER-sterss inducer (10 mM), about 70 (DTT) to $95\%$ (EGTA) of cells died stronly expressing ($10\~12$ fold) Jpk. Whereas at the low concentration ($0.001\~1.0\;mM$) of the inducer, the expression of Jpk was increased about 2.5 (EGTA) to 5 fold (DTT), which is rather similar to those of ER chaperone protein Grp78. These results altogether indicate that the ER-stress upregulated the expression of Jpk and the excess stress induces the ER-stress induced apoptosis and the concomitant expression of Jpk.

Electro-Rheological (ER) fluids belong to a class of colloidal suspensions whose global characteristics can be controlled by the imposition of an appropriate external electrical field upon the fluid domain. The ER fluids for smart hydraulic system are a class of colloidal dispersion which exhibit large reversible changes in their rheological behavior when subjected to external electrical fields. This paper presents experimental results on mechanical properties of an ER fluids subjected to electrical fatigues. As a first step, ER fluid is made of methyl cellulose(MC) ingredient choosing 25% of particle weight-concentration. Following the construction of test for mechanical properties of ER fluid, the shear stress, dynamic yield stress and current density of the ER fluids are experimentally distilled as a function of electric field cycles. The mechanical properties test of operated ER fluids are distilled and compared with those of unused ER fluids.
Submicron-sized $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ upconversion phosphor particles were synthesized by spray pyrolysis, and their luminescent properties were characterized by changing the concentration of $Er^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$. $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ showed an intense green and red emission due to the $^4S_{3/2}$ or $^2H_{11/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$ and $^4F_{9/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$ transition of $Er^{3+}$ ions, respectively. In terms of the emission intensity, the optimal concentrations of Er and Yb were 1.0 % and 2.0%, respectively, and the concentration quenching was found to occur via the dipole-dipole interaction. Upconversion mechanism was discussed by using the dependency of emission intensities on pumping powers and considering the dominant depletion processes of intermediate energy levels for the red and green emission with changing the $Er^{3+}$ concentration. An energy transfer from $Yb^{3+}$ to $Er^{3+}$ in $CeO_2$ host was mainly involved in ground-state absorption (GSA), and non-radiative relaxation from $^4I_{11/2}$ to $^4I_{13/2}$ of $Er^{3+}$ was accelerated by the $Yb^{3+}$ co-doping. As a result, the $Yb^{3+}$ co-doping led to greatly enhance the upconversion intensity with increasing ratios of the red to green emission. Finally, it is revealed that the upconversion emission is achieved by two photon processes in which the linear decay dominates the depletion of intermediate energy levels for green and red emissions for $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphor.

The fast evolution in the fold of optical communication systems demands powerful optical information treatment. These functions can be performed by integrated optical systems. A key component of such systems is erbium doped waveguide amplifier(EDWA). The intra 4f radiative transition of Er at 1.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ is particularly interesting because this wavelength is standard in optical telecommunications. The fabrication of waveguide amplifier for integrated optics using sol-gel process has received an increasing attention. Potential advantage of lower cost by less capital equipment and easy processing makes this process an attractive alternatives to conventional technologies like flame hydrolysis deposition, ion exchange and chemical vapor deposition, etc. In addition, sol-gel process has been found to be extremely suitable for the control of composition and refractive index related directly with optical properties. The main drawback of such an amplifier with respect to the EDWA is the need for a much higher Er3+ concentration to compensate for the smaller interaction length. However, the high doping of Er might be resulted in the non-radiative relaxation by clustering of Er ions End co-operative upconversion. In order to solve this problem, we investigate the possibility of avoiding short Er-Er distances by encapsulation of Er3+ ions in hosts such as organic-inorganic hybrid materials. For inorganic-organic hybrid sols, methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS), zirconyl chloride octahydrate and erbium(III) chloride hexahydrate were used as starting materials, followed by conventional sol-gel process. It was observed by TEM that nano sols having core/shell toplology were formed, depending on the mole ratio of Zr/Er. The surface roughness for the coatings on Si substrate was investigated by AFM as a function of Zr/Er ratio. The local environment and vibrational Properties of Er3+ ions were studied using Near-IR, FT-IR, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Nano hybrid coatings derived from polymer and Er doped encapsulation Eave the good luminescence at 1.55$\mu\textrm{m}$.

As electrorheological fluid(ER fluid) has a characteristic that apparent viscosity varies when electric field applied, so rheological characteristic(yield stress & viscosity) changes in proportion to the electric field applied and the response time is very short within a few miliseconds . In case of using ER fluid for journal bearing as lubricant, it is estimated that it's possible to realize very effective journal bearing system that is not complicate and has a very quick response time. It is necessary to examine the influence of rheological characteristic that varies with electric field applied on bearing characteristic to apply ER fluid to journal bearing, however there are few studies for about that. As for the journal bearing, it comes under high shear flow mode that has shear rate range of $10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ because rotational speed is very high and clearance is small. But most of the studies for about ER fluid issued until now is about the range of $10\~10^2s^{-1}$. So, there are a lot of difficulties to understand the characteristic offish shear flow mode and furthermore it is restricted to make an experiment for about the characteristic of ER fluid because of the limitation of experimental equipment. The equipment was prepared to make an experiment lot high shear flow mode that has the range of $10^3\~10^4s^{-1}$ using ER fluid that is composed of silicon oil with dispersed particle of starch. Using the above system, the fluid characteristic of ER fluid was studied.

ZnO co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$ single crystal thin films have been grown on $LiNbO_3$ (001) substrate by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method. The melts of ZnO co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$ was fixed $Er_2O_3$, concentration (1 mol%) and different ZnO concentrations 3 and 5 mol%. The crystallinity of ZnO co-doped Er :$LiNbO_3$ films became better than the $LiNbO_3$ substrate. At ZnO 5 mol% concentration, the surface of ZnO co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$ film is affected by compressive stress along both the perpendicular and the parallel direction. Also the surface of ZnO 3 mol% co-doped Er:$LiNbO_3$film is smoother than the original $LiNbO_3$ substrate surface.
