The purpose of this study was to evaluate the method for quantitative assessment of bone mass from aluminum-equivalent value of hydroxyapatite by using digital imaging system consisted of Power Macintosh 7200/120, 15-inch color monitor, and GT-9000 scanner with transparency unit. After aluminum-equivalent image made from correlation between aluminum thickness and grey scale, the accuracy of conversion to mass from aluminum-equivalent value was evaluated. Measured bone mass was compared with converted bone mass from aluminum-equivalent value of hydroxyapatite block by correlation formula between aluminum-equivalent value of hydroxyapatite block and hydroxyapatite mass. The results of this study were as follow; 1. Correlation between aluminum thickness and grey level for obtaining aluminum-equivalent image was high positively associated(r²=0.99). Converted masses from aluminum-equivalent value were very similar to measured masses. There was, statistically, no significant difference(P<0.05) between them 2. Correlation between hydroxyapatite aluminum-equivalent and hydroxyapatite mass was shown to linear relation (r²=0.95). 3. Converted masses from aluminum-equivalent value of 3 dry mandible segments were similar to measured masses. The difference between the exposure directions was not significantly different(P<0.05).
The progress of periodontal disease and the wound healing process after treatment result in alveolar bone bone change. So, detection of it is very important in the diagnosis and the radiograph of periodontal disease. Various effects have been made to assess the subtle alveolar bone change and digital subtraction radiography (DSR) has been reported to be the best method in evaluating it qualitatively and quantitatively. The present study was performed to estimate the detectable alveolar bone change qualitatively with digital subtraction radiography. For the in vitro study, 10 intraoral standard radiographs were taken from porcine dry mandible which a rectangular cortical bone chip of 0.1mm to 1.0mm thickness with 0.1mm increment was attached on the buccal surface. The radiographs without and with bone plates were reviewed at the same time by 10 observers and requested to detect the presence of cortical bone plates. Digital Subtraction radiograph was reviewed subsequently by using the DSR system(digital converter-256 grey-levels,DT 2851,Data Translation Co., U.S.A;IBM 386 ; CCD camera, FOTOVIX, Tamrom Co., Japan). The detectable thickness of cortical bone plate was O.4mm on the intraoral radiograph and 0.2mm on the subtaction images. For the human study, radiographs were taken from patients by using intraoral film holding device and aluminum reference wedge before and 3 month after bone graft and 1 week after osteoplasty. The grey level change was estimated in the subtraction images and calculated to aluminum equivalent thickness. The grey level of the grafted site was higher that that of healthy controls. Average grey levels of change on healthy controls were O.48mm aluminum equivalent. However, the amount of changes in grafted sites were 1.87mm aluminum thickness equivalent and in the site of osteoplasty were -1.49mm aluminum thickness equivalent. In conclusion, digital subtraction radiography was more effective in detecting as subtle change of alveolar bone than intraoral standard radiography. With the aid of quantitative analysis of digital subtraction radiography, alveolar bone resorption of apposition can be estimated during diagnosis and treatment of periodontally diseased patients.

The purpose of this study was to propose the utility which was evaluated the digital image processing and clinical application of the videodensitomery. The experiments were performed with IBM-PC/16bit-AT compatible, video camera(CCdtr55, Sony Co., Japan), an color monitor(MultiSync 3D, NEC, Japan) providing the resolution of 512×480 and 64 levels of gray. Sylvia Image Capture Board for the ADC(analog to digital converter) was used, composed of digitized image from digital signal and the radiographic density was measured by 256 level of gray. The periapical radiograph(Ektaspeed EP-21, Kodak Co., U. S. A) which was radiographed dried human mandible by exposure condition of 70 kVp and 48 impulses, was used for primary X-ray detector. And them evaluated for digitzed image by low and high pass filtering, correlations between aluminum equivalent values and the thickness of aluminum step wedge, aluminum equivalent values of sound enamel, dentin, and alveolar bone, the range of diffuse density for gray level ranging from 0 to 255. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The edge between aluminum steps of digitized image were somewhat blurred by low pass filtering, but edge enhancement could be resulted by high pass filtering. Expecially, edge enhancement between distal root of lower left 2nd molar and alveolar lamina dura was observed. 2. The correlation between aluminum equivalent values and the thickness of aluminum step wedge was intimated, yielding the coefficient of correlation r=0.9997(p<0.00l), the regression line was described by Y=0.9699X+0.456, and coefficient of variation amounting to 1.5%. 3. The aluminum equivalent values of sound enamel, dentin, and alvolar bone were 15.41㎜, 12.48㎜, 10.35㎜, respectively. 4. The range of diffuse density for gray level ranging from 0 to 255 was wider enough than that of photodenstiometer to be within the range of 1-4.9.
A 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick niobium filter and its quantitatively determined aluminum equivalent filter were evaluated for effects on entrance skin dose, image quality, and x-ray tube loading for three different tube voltages in radiology. There was no significant difference in the reducion in entrance skin dose and increase in tube loading between two filters while keeping radiographic contrast on the film. For the clinical use of the aluminum equivalent filter as an alternative to the niobium filter in radiology, aluminum equivalent filter thickness at the mid energy range of radiology, 90 kVp, was measured and the filter was applied to the other kVp values, 73 and 125 kVps, to evaluate the effect on the entrance skin dose and tube loading. There was no significant difference between two filter cases at the selected kVp. The aluminum filter with equivalent thickness can be used as an inexpensive alternative to the niobium filter.
The aim of this study was to establish reproducible method for measurements of radiopacity and to investigate the level of radiopacity of root canal sealers. The experiments were performed in two parts. In the first part, densitometric readings were performed using an aluminum step wedge as a reference at variable voltages and exposure times. Then standard curves for the aluminum step wedge were compared to comprehend the effect of voltage and exposure time. In the second part, on the basis of these results, appropriate conditions for exposure were adopted for standardized measurements of radiopacity. Under standardized set of conditions, densitometric measurements of ten root canal sealers and one gutta-percha point were performed and the levels of radiopacity referable to an equivalent thickness of aluminum were compared. The following results were obtained : 1. At 50 and 60 kVp, increasing the exposure time caused a decrease in the slope of the standard curve for the aluminum step wedge. However, at 70 kVp increasing the exposure time causing a parallel shift of the standard curve to the right. 2. At constant exposure time, increasing the voltage caused a decrease in the slope of the standard curve. 3. The radiopacity of root canal sealers and a gutta-percha point varied between 2.43 mm Al and 9.20 mm Al equivalent. 4. All the root canal sealers had radiopacities more than dentin, and the radiopacity of the gutta-percha point was approximately 5 times as much as that of dentin in terms of equivalent thickness of aluminum. 5. The AH26 had radiopacity more than the gutta-percha point, and the radiopacities of ZOE, Vitapex, Canals, Kerr PCS, Nogenol were similar to that of the gutta-percha point, and Tubliseal, Apatite II, Apatite III, Silapex were less radiopaque than the gutta-percha point.
The activation products of aluminum and argon are key radionuclides for operational and environmental radiological safety during the normal operation of open-tank-in-pool type research reactors using aluminum-clad fuels. Their activities measured in the primary coolant and pool surface water of HANARO have been consistent. We estimated their sources from the measured activities and then compared these values with their production rates obtained by a core calculation. For each aluminum activation product, an equivalent aluminum thickness (EAT) in which its production rate is identical to its release rate into the coolant is determined. For the argon activation calculation, the saturated argon concentration in the water at the temperature of the pool surface is assumed. The EATs are 5680, 266 and 1.2 nm, respectively, for Na-24, Mg-27 and Al-28, which are much larger than the flight lengths of the respective recoil nuclides. These values coincide with the water solubility levels and with the half-lives. The EAT for Na-24 is similar to the average oxide layer thickness (OLT) of fuel cladding as well; hence, the majority of them in the oxide layer may be released to the coolant. However, while the average OLT clearly increases with the fuel burn-up during an operation cycle, its effect on the pool-top radiation is not distinguishable. The source of Ar-41 is in good agreement with the calculated reaction rate of Ar-40 dissolved in the coolant.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze affecting ratios of strength safety in carbon fiber layer thickness of a composite fuel tank for FEV vehicles. To investigate affecting ratios by FEM modeling, the equivalent von Mises stress has been computed on the aluminum liner and carbon fiber layers of composite fuel tanks in hoop and helical directions respectively. According to the FEM results, the affecting ratios of an aluminum liner on the equivalent stress are 77.5% in hoop direction, 18.11% in $70^{\circ}C$ winded helical direction and 4.39% in $12^{\circ}C$ winded helical direction. These trends on the strength safety of carbon fiber layers have been shown as those of an aluminum liner even though the layer thickness ratio of $12^{\circ}C$ inclined carbon fiber is very high of 42% compared with that of hoop layer thickness. Thus, the computed results show that the strength safety of a carbon fiber fuel tank is more influenced by the winding angle rather than the fiber thickness of carbon fiber layers.
Purpose : To evaluate the bone densities measured on copper-equivalent image of cross sectional view of mandibular edentulous premolar area obtained by multifuctional panoramic x-ray machine, PM 2002 CC with transversal slicing system. Materials and Methods: Panoramic cross sectional views with 8 mm focal layer of aluminum step and blocks, of hydroxyapatite (RA) step, 6 HA blocks and copper step wedge having 0.03 mm thickness of each step, and of 3 bone blocks cutted by 8 mm thickness mesiodistally and a dry mandible with copper step wedge were taken by using transversal slicing system in PM 2002 Cc. All reference-equivalent images were made and analyzed by NIH image program. Results: The average copper-equivalent value of cancellous bone of bone blocks on the panoramic cross sectional view was 0.026 ± 0.020 mm Cu. The calculated average bone density was 0.38g/cm². There was no significant difference (P>0.1) between the bone densities on intraoral digital view and on the panoramic digital cross sectional view. Conclusion: The copper-equivalent image of panoramic digital cross sectional view obtained by PM 2002 CC with very thin copper step wedge was supposed to be useful to measure the bone density of cancellous bone of mandible at the premolar edentulous area.

Aluminum alloys have been used with various thicknesses suitable for light weight of structure. It is known that the thickness effect of material is an important factor affecting fatigue crack propagation under constant fatigue stress condition. In this work, we presented the behavior of fatigue crack propagation in thin plate compared to thick plate Al 2024-T3 alloy with referred thickness effect in a correlative equation determined by the shape factor and the loading factor. We chose two factors that are used in the correlative equation with considering that the experiments were carried out under a constant fatigue stress condition. The thickness ratio of thin plate compared to thick plate and the equivalent effective stress intensity factor ratio depending on thickness were chosen as shape and loading factors. A correlative equation is utilized to determine the equivalent effective stress intensity factor range of thin plate and identify the degree of increasing phenomenon of fatigue life in thin plate compared to thick plate.

The carbon fiber has low x-ray absorption property and high stiffness. This is the reason why many CT(Computed Tomography) manufacturer use carbon fiber in couch tabletop for CT scanner. In this paper, we design and make the couch tabletop made of carbon fiber composite, and verify the validity in CT scanner. In designing the couch tabletop, to determine the aluminum equivalent thickness of couch tabletop, we evaluate X-ray the transmissivity of aluminum and carbon plate in 80-120kVp X-ray energy range. And we perform structural analysis and mechanical design using determined thickness of carbon sheet. In conclusion, it was evaluated that manufactured couch tabletop satisfies X-ray transmissivity and mechanical requirements in CT scanner.
