In this paper a new equivalent static analysis method of dynamic behavior during progressive collapse is presented. The proposed analysis method uses the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the dynamic behavior influence caused by the deletion of elements during progressive collapse analysis. The proposed analysis method improves the efficiency of progressive collapse analysis haying the iterative characteristic because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix is roused in the reanalysis. By comparing the results obtained by this analysis method with those of GSA code analysis and time history analysis, it is shown that the results obtained by this analysis method more closely approach to those of time history analysis than by GSA code analysis.
Most buildings feature core walls (and shear walls) that are placed eccentrically within the building to fulfil architectural requirements. Contemporary earthquake design standards require three dimensional (3D) dynamic analysis to be undertaken to analyse the imposed seismic actions on this type of buildings. A static method of analysis is always appealing to design practitioners because results from the analysis can always be evaluated independently by manual calculation techniques for quality control purposes. However, the equivalent static analysis method (also known as the lateral load method) which involves application of an equivalent static load at a certain distance from the center of mass of the buildings can generate results that contradict with results from dynamic analysis. In this paper the Generalised Force Method of analysis has been introduced for multi-storey buildings. Algebraic expressions have been derived to provide estimates for the edge displacement ratio taking into account the effects of dynamic torsional actions. The Generalised Force Method which is based on static principles has been shown to be able to make accurate estimates of torsional actions in seismic conditions. The method is illustrated by examples of two multi-storey buildings. Importantly, the black box syndrome of a 3D dynamic analysis of the building can be circumvented.

Most of the structure of the real world is influenced under dynamic loads. However, when structure analysis and the structural optimization is performed, it is assumed that the static load acts on structure. When considering the actual load of dynamic loads in order to take into account a variety of loads, computational resources and time becomes a big burden in terms of cost. However, considering only the simple static load condition is not preferable for structural safety. For this reason, a lot of studies have been conducted trying to compensate this trouble by applying weight factor or replacing dynamic load with the equivalent static load. In this study, structural optimization techniques for structures under dynamic loads is proposed by applying the equivalent static load. From previous study, after determining the positions of equivalent static load based on primary degrees of freedom, the equivalent static load is calculated through the optimization process. In this process, the equivalent static load optimization of previous research is complemented by adding constraints to avoid excessively large load extraction. In numerical examples, dynamic load is applied to the truss structure and the plate. Then, the reliability of the proposed optimization technique is verified by carrying out size optimization with the equivalent static load.

The joined-wing is a new concept of the airplane wing. The fore-wing and the aft-wing are joined together in a joined-wing. The range and loiter are longer than those of a conventional wing. The joined-wing can lead to increased aerodynamic performance and reduction of the structural weight. In this research, dynamic response optimization of a joined-wing is carried out by using equivalent static loads. Equivalent static loads are made to generate the same displacement field as the one from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic analysis. The gust loads are considered as critical loading conditions and they dynamically act on the structure of the aircraft. It is difficult to identify the exact gust load profile. Therefore, the dynamic loads are assumed to be (1-cosine) function. Static response optimization is performed for the two cases. One uses the same design variable definition as dynamic response optimization. The other uses the thicknesses of all elements as design variables. The results are compared.
This study presents a dynamic response analysis of operational and parked wind turbines in order to gain better understanding of the roles of wind loads on turbine blades and tower in the generation of turbine response. The results show that the wind load on the tower has a negligible effect on the blade responses of both operational and parked turbines. Its effect on the tower response is also negligible for operational turbine, but is significant for parked turbine. The tower extreme responses due to the wind loads on blades and tower of parked turbine can be estimated separately and then combined for the estimation of total tower extreme response. In current wind turbine design practice, the tower extreme response due to the wind loads on blades is often represented as a static response under an equivalent static load in terms of a concentrated force and a moment at the tower top. This study presents an improved equivalent static load model with additional distributed inertial force on tower, and introduces the square-root-of-sum-square combination rule, which is shown to provide a better prediction of tower extreme response.

The seismic responses of small-scale spatial frames such as school gymnasiums are usually evaluated using static analysis, although time-history analysis should be carried out to fully incorporate the dynamic responses of the structures against seismic motions. In this study, advanced static analysis procedures arc presented for school gymnasiums that will improve the performance evaluation against seismic motions. The seismic loads are approximated by equivalent static loads corresponding to the two performance levels; i.e., Levels 1 and 2 defined by the Japanese building standard. The importance of utilizing the eigenmode in the load pattern is discussed. Simple static analysis procedures are presented for evaluation of maximum vertical acceleration. It is shown that the static analysis for Level 2 input significantly underestimates the responses by dynamic analysis; however, the inelastic responses for Level 2 are shown to be successfully evaluated using the equivalent linearization that is similar to the $^{\circ}$Dmethod based on calculation of limit strength$^{\circ}{\pm}$ for building frames in Japan.

This paper presents a quasi-static optimization technique for elastic structures under dynamic loads. An equivalent static load (ESL) set is defined as a static load set which generates the same displacement field as that from a dynamic load at a certain time. Multiple ESL sets calculated at every time step are employed to represent the various states of the structure under the dynamic load. They can cover every critical state that might happen at an arbitrary time. Continuous characteristics of dynamic load are simulated by multiple discontinuous ones of static loads. The calculated sets of ESLs are applied as a multiple loading condition in the optimization process. A design cycle is defined as a circulated process between an analysis domain and a design domain. Design cycles are repeated until a design converges. The analysis domain gives a loading condition necessary for the design domain. The design domain gives a new updated design to be verified by the analysis domain in the next design cycle. This iterative process is quite similar to that of the multidisciplinary optimization technique. Even though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, the proposed technique makes it possible to optimize the structures under dynamic loads. It has also applicability, flexibility, and reliability.

The key factor of quality in precision metal forming is to meet the requirements of parts size and shape. Particular problem of unflatness occurs frequently. This study focuses on figuring out the cause of unflatness. To predict the amount of unflatness after ejection from tool, equivalent temperature method is used. This method, temperature equivalent to the final stress value is calculated, and it is applied as the boundary condition of the linear static analysis. The final of formed part is used as the geometry model of the static analysis.
The residual displacement ratio (RDRs) response spectra have been generally used as an important means to evaluate the post-earthquake repairability, and the ratios of residual to maximum inelastic displacement are considered to be more appropriate for development of the spectra. This methodology, however, assumes that the expected residual displacement can be computed as the product of the RDRs and maximum inelastic displacement, without considering the correlation between these two variables, which inevitably introduces potential systematic error. For providing an adequately accurate estimate of residual displacement, while accounting for the collapse resistance performance prior to the repairability evaluation, a probability-based procedure to estimate the residual displacement demands using the nonlinear static analysis (NSA) is developed for single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. To this end, the energy-based equivalent damping ratio used for NSA is revised to obtain the maximum displacement coincident with the nonlinear time history analysis (NTHA) results in the mean sense. Then, the possible systematic error resulted from RDRs spectra methodology is examined based on the NTHA results of SDOF systems. Finally, the statistical relation between the residual displacement and the NSA-based maximum displacement is established. The results indicate that the energy-based equivalent damping ratio will underestimate the damping for short period ranges, and overestimate the damping for longer period ranges. The RDRs spectra methodology generally leads to the results being non-conservative, depending on post-yield stiffness. The proposed approach emphasizes that the repairability evaluation should be based on the premise of no collapse, which matches with the current performance-based seismic assessment procedure.

An optimization method is proposed for the simultaneous design of structural and control systems using the equivalent static loads. In the past researches, the control parameters of such feedback gains are obtained to improve some performance in the steady-state. However, the actuators which have position and velocity feedback gains should be designed to exhibit a good performance in the time domain. In other words, the system analysis should be conducted for the transient-state in dynamic manner. In this research, a new equivalent static loads method is presented to treat the control variables as the design variables. The equivalent static loads (ESLs) set is defined as a static load set which generates the same displacement field as that from dynamic loads at a certain time. The calculated sets of ESLs are applied as multiple loading conditions in the optimization process. Several examples are solved to validate the proposed method.
