  • The change in the NO emission indices (EINO) in a two-dimensional plane has been investigated, which is due to the interaction between a vortex and methane-air flames established at different equivalence ratios, by solving the field equation. After solving the field equation, the spatial distribution of G-values is obtained. The NO emission index is calculated after applying the appropriate relation between the G-values and the NO production rate or the mass fraction of methane obtained from the library of freely propagating flames created from detailed simulations. When a vortex exists in a reacting flow field, in general EINO slightly increases, whereas ElNO is lowered in the vicinity of the vortex regardless of flow direction. A change in vortex size has negligible impact on EINO$\_$T/ but increasing the vortex strength slightly increases EINO$\_$T/ in the domain of this study.

  • Measurements on the combustion characteristics of dimethyl ether(DME:$CH_3$O$CH_3$) as compared with LPC in constant volume combustion chamber have been conducted. The DME is a good alternative fuel having oxygen component in fuel. To elucidate the combustion characteristics of dimethyl ether as a fuel, the combustion pressures, combustion durations, and pollutants(NOx, $CO_2$, CO) are measured with equivalence ratios(Ø), and initial Pressures of fuel-air mixture. In the case of DME, the NOx concentration peaks in leu flame Ø = 0.85~0.9, and $CO_2$ concentration peaks at Ø=1.1, while the CO concentration abruptly rises at the condition of fuel-rich mixtures.

  • MILD combustion is a highly favored technology for solving the trade-off relation between high thermal efficiency and low pollutant emissions. The system has low NOx concentration in high temperature combustion by recirculating the combustion gas, as well as improving the thermal efficiency by making the internal temperature in a combustion furnace uniform. This study describes the combustion characteristics of a conical MILD combustor in a laboratory-scale furnace by adjusting the equivalence ratio with the fuel gas flow rate while maintaining a constant air flow rate of the furnace. The MILD regime in the furnace is well characterized and the in-furnace temperature and emissions were predicted, respectively, for the range of equivalence of 0.69 - 0.83. For the range of equivalence ratios, this study confirmed the existence of a stable flame region that has an approximately $300^{\circ}C$ temperature difference between the maximum flame temperature region and main reaction region.

  • In this study, blowoff was investigated in a ducted combustor with the bluff body when acoustic excitation was forced. To observe the flame structure, OH radical chemiluminescence was used and the image was analyzed by using POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) algorithm. Natural gas mainly composed of methane was used as fuel. Blowoff occurred when the equivalence ratio was reduced. Equivalence ratio causing blowoff was measured by changing air flow rate, excitation frequency and sound pressure. Blowoff equivalence ratio was varied depending on the experimental conditions. Vortex frequency behind the bluff body and resonance effect in combustor are the main factors that affect the blowoff equivalence ratios with the excitation.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of six steel reinforced high strength concrete T-shaped short-limb shear walls configured with T-shaped steel truss under low cyclic reversed loading. Considering different categories of ratios of wall limb height to thickness, shear/span ratios, axial compression ratios and stirrup reinforcement ratios were selected to investigate the seismic behavior (strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity, ductility and deformation characteristics) of all the specimens. Two different failure modes were observed during the tests, including the flexural-shear failure for specimens with large shear/span ratio and the shear-diagonal compressive failure for specimens with small shear/span ratio. On the basis of requirement of Chinese seismic code, the deformation performance for all the specimens could not meet the level of 'three' fortification goals. Recommendations for improving the structural deformation capacity of T-shaped steel reinforced high strength concrete short-limb shear wall were proposed. Based on the experimental observations, the mechanical analysis models for concrete cracking strength and shear strength were derived using the equivalence principle and superposition theory, respectively. As a result, the proposed method in this paper was verified by the test results, and the experimental results agreed well with the proposed model.

  • Spherically expanding flames are used to measure flame speeds, which are derived the corresponding laminar flame speeds at zero stretch. Flame speeds of n-butanol at high pressure are studied over an extensive range of equivalence ratios. The classical shadowgraph technique is used to detect the reaction zone. In analytical methodology the optimization process using least mean squares is performed to extract the laminar flame speeds. Laminar flame speeds are compared with results obtained from numerical work.

  • The NO emissions at the exhaust manifo1d were investigated with a fast NO analyzer to investigate the cycle-by-cycle variations on NO emissions level and the dependence of NO emissions on combustion. The measurement was performed with a part load condition with respect to the mixture ratios and the changes in loads at 1800rpm. The averaged values were obtained during 200 cycles. We found that there is characteristic pattern in 70 emissions from exhaust port and it was possible to set a representative value with the data sampled during specific period. As the load increased, the characteristics of NO emissions were more dependent on combustion pressures. It was also analyzed that the correlation between combustion pressures and NO emissions for different equivalence ratios tends to increase as the mixture goes leaner, Furthermore, this correlation for the lean mixture near the lean limit seemed to be kept.

  • A short reaction mechanism for premixed $CH_4/CHF_3/Air$ flames was developed with a reduction method of the combined application of simulation error minimization (SEM) which included connectivity method and principal component analysis. It consisted of 43 species and 403 elementary reactions at the condition of less than 5% of maximum error. The calculation time operated with a short mechanism was over 5 times faster than one with a detailed reaction mechanism. Good agreement was found between the flame speeds calculated by the short reaction mechanism and those by the detailed reaction mechanism for the entire range of $CHF_3/CH_4$ mole ratios and equivalence ratios. In addition excellent agreements were determined for the profiles of temperature, species concentration, and the production rates of the various species. So the short reaction mechanism was able to accurately predict the flame structure for premixed $CH_4/CHF_3/Air$ flames.

  • The objective of this study is the rapid bulk combustion of mixture in a constant volume chamber with a tiny sub-chamber. Some narrow passage holes were arranged to induce simultaneous multi-point ignition in the main chamber by jet of burned and unburned gases including radicals from the sub-chamber, and the equivalence ratios of pre-mixture in the main chamber and the sub-chamber were the same. The principal factors of the Radical Induced Auto-Ignition (RIAI) method are the diameter of the passage holes and the volume of sub-chamber. The relationship between the sub-chamber and diameter of passage hole was represented by the ratios of sub-chamber volume to passage hole volume. The ratios are non-dimensional coefficients for sub-chamber characteristics. As a result, the RIAI method reduced the combustion period, which expanded the lean limit in comparison with SI method.
