Dynamic Behavior Study Using Videomicroscopy in Systems Containing Nonpolar Hydrocarbon Oil and C10E5 Nonionic Surfactant Solution (Videomicroscopy를 이용한 C10E5 비이온 계면활성제 수용액과 비극성 탄화수소 오일 사이의 동적 거동에 관한 연구)

  • Phase equilibrium and dynamic behavior studies were performed on systems containing $C_{10}E_5$ nonionic surfactant solutions and nonpolar hydrocarbon oils. The phase behavior showed an oil in water (O/W) microemulsion (${\mu}E$) in equilibrium with excess oil phase at low temperatures and a water in oil (W/O) ${\mu}E$ in equilibrium with excess water phase at high temperatures. For intermediate temperatures a three-phase region containing excess water, excess oil, and a middle-phase microemulsion was observed and the transition temperature was found to increase with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. Dynamic behavior at low temperatures showed that an oil drop size decreased linearly with time due to solubilization into micelles and the solubilization rate decreased with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil. On the other hand, both spontaneous emulsification of water into oil phase and expansion of oil drop were observed because of diffusion of surfactant and water into oil phase. Under conditions of a 3 phase region including a middle-phase ${\mu}E$, both rapid solubilization and emulsification of oil into aqueous solutions were found mainly due to the existence of ultra-low interfacial tension. Interfacial tensions were measured as a function of time for n-decane oil drops brought into contact with 1 wt% surfactant solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Both equilibrium interfacial tension and equilibration time increased with an increase in the chain length of a hydrocarbon oil.

  • Non-proportional loading tests of Nylon 66 at room temperature exhibit path dependent behavior and plasticity-relaxation interactions. The uniaxial formulation of the viscoplasticity theory based on overstress (VBO), which has been used to reproduce the nonlinear strain rate sensitivity, relaxation, significant recovery and cyclic softening behaviors of Nylon 66, is extended to three-dimensions to predict the response in strain-controlled, comer-path tests. VBO consists of a flow law that is easily written for either the stress or the strain as the independent variable. The flow law depends on the overstress, the difference between the stress and the equilibrium stress that is a state variable in VBO. The evolution law of the equilibrium stress in turn contains two additional state variables, the kinematic stress and the isotropic stress. The simulations show that the constitutive model is competent at modeling the deformation behavior of Nylon 66 and other solid polymers.

Adsorption of Lead Ions from Aqueous Solutions Using Milled Pine Bark (분말 소나무 수피를 이용한 수용액 중의 납 이온 흡착)

  • The use of pine bark, a natural adsorbent prepared from Korean Red Pine (Pinus densifloral), was studied for its adsorption behavior of lead ion from aqueous solution. Adsorption experiments were carried out on lead ion concentrations of 10mg/L. Adsorption of lead ion could be described by both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Treatment of the bark with nitric acid greatly increased initial adsorption rate, and equilibrium sorption capacity increased by approximately 48%. A pseudo second-order kinetic model fitted well for the kinetic behavior of lead ion adsorption onto the bark. Acid-treated bark demonstrated its adsorption capacity quite close to that of granular activated carbon. Results of this study indicated that ion exchange and chelation were involved in the adsorption process.

  • An improved version of nonlinear low-Reynolds-number k-.epsilon. model is developed. In this model, the limiting near-wall behavior and nonlinear Reynolds stress representations are incorporated. Emphasis is placed on the adoption of Ry(.iden. $k^{1}$2/y/.nu.) instead of $y^{[-10]}$ (.iden. $u_{{\tau}/y/{\nu}}$) in the low-Reynolds-number model for predicting turbulent separated and reattaching flows. The non-equilibrium effect is examined to describe recirculating flows away from the wall. The present model is validated by doing the benchmark problem of turbulent flow behind a backward-facing step. The predictions of the present model are cross-checked with the existing measurements and DNS data. The model performance is shown to be generally satisfactory.

  • The relationship between the isothermal age-hardening behavior and the phase transformation in the commercial dental Au-Ag-Cu-Pd alloy was investigated Age-hardening was mostly attributed to the lattice distortions of the supersaturated w phase resulting from the transformation to the metastable phasel which were more distinct at lower aging temperature. The lattice distortions resulting from the transformation of the metastable phases to the equilibrium phases also made a contribution to the age-hardening.

Impact Behavior Analysis of Mechanical Monoleaflet Heart Valve Prostheses in the Opening Phase

  • In this paper, fluttering behavior of mechanical monoleaflet tilting disc heart valve prostheses during the opening phase was analyzed taking into consideration the impact between the occluder and the guiding strut at the fully open position. The motion of the valve occluder was modeled as a rotating system, and equations were derived by employing the moment equilibrium principle. Forces due to lift, drag, gravity and buoyancy were considered as external forces acting on the occluder. The 4th order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the governing equations. The results iimonstrated that the occludes reaches steady equilibrium position only after damped vibration. Fluttering frequency varies as a function of time after opening and is in the range of 8-84 Hz. Valve opening appears to be affected by the orientation of the valve relative to gravitational force. The opening velocities are in the range of 0.65-1.42m/sec and the dynamic loads by impact of the occludes and the strut are in the range of 90-190 N.

  • In this paper, fluttering behavior of mechanical bileaflet heart valve prosthesis was analyzed taking into consideration of the impact between valve plate and stopper Vibration system of the valve was modeled as a rotating system, and equations are induced by moment equilibrium equations. Lift force, drag force, gravity and buoyancy were considered as external forces acting on the valve plate/ The 4th order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the equations. Valve plate does not come to the static equilibrium position at a stretch, but come to that position after under damping vibration. Damping ratio increases as the cardiac optput increases, and the mean damping ratio is in the range of 0.16~40.25. Fluttering frequency does not have any specific value, but varies as a function of time. It is in the range of 10~40Hz. Valve opening appears to be affected by the orientation of the of the valve relative to gravitational forces.

Sulfur Redox Equilibrium in Mixed Alkali Silicate Glass Melts

  • The dependence of sulfur redox behavior and its diffusivity on temperature and composition was studied in mixed alkali silicate melts by means of square wave voltammetry (SWV) at different frequencies in a temperature range of $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$. The voltammograms showed two reduction peaks at high frequency but only one peak at low frequency. Irrespective of $K_2O/(Na_2O+K_2O)$, each peak potential due to reduction of $S^{6+}$ to $S^{4+}$ and $S^{4+}$ to $S^0$ moved toward a negative direction with temperature decrease, and the peak current showed a strong dependence on frequency at a constant temperature. However, the compositional dependence of the peak potential showed an inconsistent behavior with an increase of $K_2O$. The mixed alkali effect was not observed in sulfur diffusion. This inconsistency of both peak potential and diffusion for compositional dependence may be derived from the strong volatilization of sulfur in melts.

  • A new modification of the SIS epidemic model incorporating the adaptive host behavior is proposed. Unlike the common situation in most epidemic models, this system has two disease-free equilibrium points, and we were able to prove that as the basic reproduction number approaches the threshold of 1, these two points merge and a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of codimension three occurs. The occurrence of this bifurcation is a sign of the complexity of the dynamics of the system near the value 1 of basic reproduction number. Both local and global stability of disease-free and endemic equilibrium point are studied.
