An optimum design has been performed to maximize specific energy (SED) of composite flywheel rotor for energy storage system. The flywheel rotor is assumed to be an axisymmetric thick laminated shell with a plane strain state for structural analysis. For the structural analysis the centrifugal force is considered and the stiffness matrix equation was derived for each ring considering the interferences between the rings. The global stiffness matrix was derived by integrating the local stiffness matrix satisfying the conditions of force and displacement compatibilities. Displacements are then calculated from the global stiffness matrix and the stresses in each ring are also calculated. 3-D intra-laminar quadratic Tsai-Wu criterion is then used for the strength analysis. An optimum procedure is also developed to find the optimal interferences and lay up angle to maximize SED using the sensitivity analysis.
We establish the existence of weak solutions in an infinite subsonic channel in the self-similar plane to the two-dimensional Burgers system. We consider a boundary value problem in a fixed domain such that a part of the domain is degenerate, and the system becomes a second order elliptic equation in the channel. The problem is motivated by the study of the weak shock reflection problem and 2-D Riemann problems. The two-dimensional Burgers system is obtained through an asymptotic reduction of the 2-D full Euler equations to study weak shock reflection by a ramp.

To extend the widely used Gibson and Launder's second order closure model to the low-Reynolds-number region near a wall, modifications have been made for velocity pressure-gradient interaction and dissipation terms in the stress equations, and also for the dissipation rate equation. From the computation of fully developed plane channel flow, it is found that the results with present model agree well with the data of direct numerical simulation in the predictions of stress components. And, the computed mean velocity profile coincides with the universal velocity law.

Most naval underwater weapon system can be simplified to a circular cylindrical structure which has vibrating machineries inside. In order to predict efficiently the total acoustic radiation power of cylindrical structure, surface velocity is measured and radiation efficiency of surface element is calculated. Then, they are substituted to the surface pressure in the simplified Helmholtz integral equation which assumes acoustic far-field and plane-wave approximation at the surface. Surface velocity and total acoustic radiation power for a submerged cylinder are measured in water-tank. In this example, it is found that total acoustic power output obtained from the prediction is in good agreement with that of measurement in mid-high frequency range.

An ocean buoy energy farm is considered for Green energy generation and delivery to small towns along the Korean coast. The present study presents that the floating buoy-type energy farm appears to be sufficiently feasible for trapping more energy compared to affixed cylinder duck array. It is also seen from the numerical results that the resonated waves between spaced buoys are further trapped by floating buoy motion. Our numerical study is analyzed by a plane-wave approximation, in which evanescent mode effects are included in a modified mild-slope equation based on the scattering characteristics for a single buoy.

This paper proposes a new method for LQR controller design. It is unsystematic and difficult to design an LQR controller by trial and error. The proposed method is capable of systematically calculating weighting matrices for desired pole(s) by the pole's moving-range in S-plane and the relational equation between closed-loop pole(s) and weighting matrices. This will provide much-needed functionality to apply LQR controller. The example shows the feasibility of the proposed method.

This short paper suggests a control strategy using a stepwise fuzzy moving sliding surface. The moving surface is a Sugeno-type fuzzy system that has the angle of state error vector and the distance from the origin in the phase plane as inputs and a first-order linear differential equation as an output. The surface initially passes arbitrary initial states and subsequently moves towards a predetermined surface via rotating or shifting. the proposed method reduces the reaching and tracking time and improves robustness. The asymptotic stability of the fuzzy sliding surface is proved. The validity of the proposed control scheme is shown in computer simulation for a second-order nonlinear system.

The cell modeling homogenization method to derive the constitutive equation considering the microstructures of the fiber reinforced composites has been previously developed for composites with simple microstructures such as 2D plane composites and 3D rectangular shaped composites. Here, the method has been further extended for 3D circular braided composites, utilizing B-spline curves to properly describe the more complex geometry of 3D braided composites. For verification purposes, the method has been applied for orthotropic elastic properties of the 3D circular braided glass fiber reinforced composite, in particular for the tensile property. Prepregs of the specimen have been fabricated using the 3D braiding machine through RTM (resin transfer molding) with epoxy as a matrix. Experimentally measured uniaxial tensile properties agreed well with predicted values obtained fer two volume fractions.

The centrifugal terce acting on a rotating disk creates the in-plane loads in radial and circumferential directions. Application of fiber reinforced composite materials to the relating disk can satisfy the demand for the increment of its rotating speed. However, the existing researches have been confined to lamina disks. This paper deals with the vibration analysis of rotating composite laminate disks. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating laminated disks. Galerkin's method is applied to obtain the series solution. The numerical results are given for the CFRP laminate disks with stacking sequence [0/90]s and [90/0]s.

Laminar vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder with and without splitter plates attached to the circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers are simulated by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Strokes equations. The Strouhal number, lift and drag rapidly change with the splitter plate. Far-field noise from the vortex shedding behind the cylinder is computed using the Lighthill acoustic analogy and the Curle's solution for the Lighthill equation. The acoustic source functions are obtained from the computed near-field velocity and pressure. Numerical results show that the volume quadrupole noise is small at low Mach numbers, compared with the surface dipole noise. Also the amplitude and frequency of the acoustic density fluctuations are varied with the length of splitter plates. The scattering effects at the edge of a splitter plate are considered by using the half-plane Green's function.
