  • Macro interfaces between two different bulk materials which affect the stability of insulation system exist inevitably in the complex insulation system using in extra high voltage (EHV) electric devices. In this paper, Interface between epoxy and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) was selected as an interface in electrical insulation system and the AC dielectric strength of the interface was investigated. Air compress system was used to give pressure to the interface. Specimens were prepared in various ways to generate different surface conditions for each type of interface. Increasing interfacial pressure, decreasing surface roughness and spreading oil over surfaces improve the AC interfacial dielectric strength. Especially, the dielectric strength was saturated at certain interfacial pressure.

  • The microcapsule for thermochromism is based on the polymerization reaction between epoxy resin and amine curing agent. The preparation process of microcapsule is based on dissolving or dispersing a hydrophobic core materials[one-dye-black(OBD), bis-phenol A(BPA), cetyl alcohol] in an aqueous solution of gelatin, epoxy resin and isophorondiamine(IPDA) ; the gelatin and IPDA used as a dispersion stabilizer and an hardening agent, respectively. The structures of epoxy resin and microcapsule materials have been analyzed by FT-IR and UV/Vis spectra. The mean diameter and size distribution of microcapsule are 1.46~1.75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 1.42, respectively. The DSC thermograms of microcapsules indicated 2 kinds of endothermic peaks at 47 and 322$^{\circ}C$. This is possibly corresponding to the melting peak of core material and wall meterial. These microcapsules are applied to the fabric by printing. Complex finished fabric showed a good wear resistance on rubbing test and the print pattern to the cotton fabric showed a reversible thermochromism ; ${\mu}_{max}$ are 580 nm below 4$0^{\circ}C$ and 276.5nm above 4$0^{\circ}C$ in ethanol/water(2/8), respectively.

  • Fixtures such as bushings in terminations of high temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable systems are subjected to high voltages, which have to transition from ambient to cryogenic temperatures. As such it is imperative to ensure the integrity of the dielectrics under all operating conditions, including thermal aspects brought about by the passage of current. Gaseous helium(GHe) at high pressure is regarded as a potential coolant for superconducting cables. The dielectric aspects of cryogenic helium gas are both complex and demanding. In this experimental study we looked at the interface between a smooth epoxy surface and high pressure helium gas in a homogeneous electric field. The alternating current(AC) flashover voltages of epoxy samples are presented. The results have been analyzed by using Weibull statistics. In addition to the behavior of the epoxy in gaseous helium as a function of pressure and temperature we also present data of the characteristics of the epoxy in mineral oil and in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$). The breakdown characteristics of a uniform field gap in gaseous helium as a function of pressure and temperature under AC, direct current(DC) and lightning impulse voltages are also given. Electric field calculations have been made for one of the experimental geometries in an attempt to explain some of the anomalies in the experimental results.

  • Because complex insulation method is used in EHV(extra high voltage) insulation systems, macro Interfaces between two different bulk materials which affect the stability of insulation system exist inevitably. Interface between toughened epoxy and silicone rubber was selected as a interface in EHV insulation systems and tested AC interfacial breakdown properties with variation of many conditions to influence on electrical Properties, such as interfacial pressure, roughness and oil. Specimen was designed to reduce the effect of charge transport from electrode in the process of breakdown and to have the tangential electrical potential with the direction of the interface between epoxy and silicone rubber by using FEM(finite elements method). It could control the interfacial pressure, roughness and viscosity of oil. From the result of this study, it was shown that the interfacial breakdown voltage is improved by increasing interfacial Pressure and oil. In particular, the dielectric strength saturates at certain interracial Pressure level. The decreasing ratio of the interfacial breakdown voltage in non-oiled specimen was increased by the temperature rising, while oiled specimen was not affected by temperature.

  • We successfully decorated multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with silver by reacting Ag-NPs with thiolfunctionalized MWNT-SH. Ag alkylcarbamate complex was used as an Ag precursor. Uniform Ag-NPs (5-10 nm) were effectively prepared by microwaving within 60 s using 1-amino-4-methylpiperazine (AMP), which acts as a reaction medium, reducing agent, and stabilizer. The MWNTs were functionalized with 2-aminoethanethiol. Exploiting the chemical affinity between thiol and Ag-NPs, Ag-MWNT nanohybrids were obtained by spontaneous chemical adsorption of MWNT-SH to Ag through Ag-S bonds. The Ag-S-MWNTs were characterized by TGA, XRD, and TEM to confirm that Ag-NPs were uniformly decorated onto the MWNTs. The Ag-S-MWNTs were then employed as conducting filler in epoxy resin to fabricate electrically conducting polymer composites. The electrical properties of the composites were measured and compared with that containing MWNT-SH. The electrical conductivity of composites containing 0.4 wt % Ag-S-MWNT was four orders of magnitude higher than those containing same content of MWNT-SH, confirming Ag-S-MWNT as an effective conducting filler.

  • The effect of novel N-crotyl-N,N-dimethyl-4-methylanilinium hexafluroantimonate (CMH) curing agent on cure behavior and thermal properties of DGEBA epoxy cationic system was investigated. From DSC measurements of DGEBA/CMH system, it was shown that this system exhibits an excellent thermal latent characteristic in a given temperature and reveals complex cure behavior as indicated by multiple exotherms. The conversion and conversion rate of DGEBA/CMH system increased with increasing the concentration of initiator due to high activity of CMH. Viscoelastic properties during gel formation of DGEBA with CMH were investigated by rheological techniques under isothermal condition. The gel time obtained from the modulus crossover. point t(G')=G", was affected by high curing temperature and concentration of CMH, resulting in high degree of network formation in cationic polymerization. The thermal stabilities were discussed in terms of the activation energy for decomposition and thermal factors determined from TGA measurements.ents.

  • [ ${\gamm}-Glycidoxy$ ] propyl trimethoxy silane, CTBN rubber(carboxyl terminated butadiene acrylonitrile rubber) and GMA(glycidyl methacrylate) were reacted on the surface of silica one by one in existence of TEA(triethylamine) or BPO(benzoyl peroxide). The amount of reactant was $2.5{\sim}5.8%$ of treated silica weight. The treated silica was mixed with epoxy resin and MTHPA(methyl tetrahydro phthalic anhydride) in the range of $0{\sim}60%$(wt.%) of total component. The thermal properties were tested for cured products. By using silica treated with silane/rubber or silane/rubber/vinyl, comparing with 3% of rubber mixed directly, it had 13% higher $T_g$ and 10% lower thermal expansion coefficient at $35{\sim}55%$ of silica contents.

  • Screw rotors are core parts of screw type air compressors, compressors in refrigerating machines and super chargers of automobiles etc. They are composed of a female and a male rotors which have complex section profiles and helically swept geometry. Screw type compressors have advantages of low noise, high efficiency, less needs in maintenance etc. Usually, machining process of screw rotors requires long machining time using CNC machine designed only for screw rotors, which increase the cost of production. In this work, the screw rotors for air-compressors were manufactured with fiber reinforced epoxy composite materials by resin transfer molding process. The mold for the RTM process was made of aluminum and silicon rubber and was designed for release of helical shape products. Composite screw rotors, manufactured by RTM process, have advantages of lightweight, less cost of production, good characteristics of vibration etc.

  • Surface of crystalline silica was sequentially reacted with silane(A 187), liquid $rubber(CTBN{\times}8)$, and vinyl monomer(GMA) in existence of TEA(triethylamine) or BPO(benzoyl peroxide). It was mixed with epoxy resin at a ratio $0{\times}60%$ (vol. % ) of total component. For mixtures, viscous properties were investigated experimentally. 1) Coating ratio depended on pH of mixture and quantity of catalyst. 2) Treated silica represented lower viscosity than untreated. 3) Thixotropic index represented best at silica_content $15{\sim}23%$ and showed more large deviation over $120^{\circ}C$. 4) Relative viscosity followed kernel's at $0{\times}10%$ of silica content and get out of Mooney's at more than 15%.
