  • In this paper, the effect of silane-treated silicas and epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) addition on adhesion properties of silicas-filled epoxy adhesives was examined. The silicas were treated by ${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxy silane (MPS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane (GPS), and ${\gamma}$-mercapto propyl trimethoxy silane (MCPS). Surface and structural properties of the adhesives were determined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The t-peel strength of the adhesives was estimated using the universal testing machine (UTM). And, the equilibrium spreading pressure, surface free energy, and specific surface area were investigated by BET methods with $N_2$/77 K adsorption. As a result, the peel strength of the adhesives was increased in the presence of silane-treated silicas in the adhesives compared to that of untreated silicas. This result indicated that the silane coupling agent played an important role in improving the dispersion of silicas in epoxy adhesives. And, the adhesives treated by MCPS were superior to the others in adhesion.

  • This study investigated the characteristics for rice husk pulverization and surface modification of biomass byproducts composed of rice husk, corn extract gourd, wheat bran, and soybean curd. The size of particles of rice husk was at 6.44 ㎛ and represented the most affordable material for preparing the bio-degradable film among the tested byproducts. The silane treatment and adding 2% of ESO (Epoxidized soybean oil) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane solution mixed in a 1:1 ratio were best to the surface modification and SEM-based particle shape. Above the results, adding 2% of mixed solution after silane treatment of rice husks processed through an air classifying mill (ACM) allows for its use as a raw material of bio-degradable plastic film.

  • In this study, to replace phthalate-based plasticizers known as endocrine disruptors, compounds as plasticizer candidates were synthesized by using alcohols containing rings and fatty acids extracted from animal and vegetable oils, and their properties as plasticizers, including their plasticization efficiency, were evaluated. Nine compounds synthesized by esterification of fatty acids (caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid) and alcohols (solketal, benzyl alcohol, cyclohexanol) were identified by 1H-NMR. The nine synthetic compounds were evaluated for their plasticity by adding them to PVC resin, and compared with the commercial plasticizers DEHP, DINCH, and ESO. According to the results, plasticization efficiency was 0.96 to 1.02 times higher than DEHP, 0.94 to 0.98 times higher than ESO, and 1.05 to 1.10 times higher than DINCH. Thermal stability was somewhat lower than that of DEHP and DINCH, but showed better results than ESO. The results of the solvent extraction test showed that both aqueous and oily solvents showed higher values than DEHP and DINCH but showed similar or superior properties to ESO.

  • Pesticide formulations for controlled release were pepared with hollow silica microspheres. The hollow microsphere, which was obtained through calcination for the core removed after silica coating, showed maximum impregnation of benfuracarb up to 2.7 times of its mass in comparison with those obtained through the other core removal method. The release test of the pesticide formulation, when used with ESO(Epoxidized Soybean Oil) as a binder, showed ideal release pattern with steady release rate from the day 10 to 30 retaining the benfuracarb concentration in the water around 1.65 ppm.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate thermal stability, reactivity, and bonding strength of existing epoxy resin mixed with the epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) in order to use soybean oil economically. In the dry shear test, the marked strengths showed $30.5kgf/cm^2$ at the ratio of ESBO to epoxy resin 9 : 1 and $6.2kgf/cm^2$ at the ratio 8 : 2. The bonding strengths of the others, except mixing ratios 2 : 8 and 1 : 9, exceeded the requirement of Korean plywood standard of $7.0kgf/cm^2$. In the wet shear test, the result was $5.8kgf/cm^2$ at the ratio 9 : 1. There were no thickness swelling and moisture absorption in the water resistance of the film. The value of activation energy, Tg (${\Delta}E$), by DSC analysis showed between $110^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$ through all ratios. Epoxy in the epoxy resin fully reacted with the hardener (TETA), but it is difficult to decide that epoxys in the ESBO were reacted directly with the hardener from FT-IR analysis. As the mixing ratio of ESBO increased, the thermal stabilities dropped from TGA analysis. From the comprehensive view on the results of above experiments, it could be confirmed through experiments that the ESBO in the mixed adhesive of epoxy resin/ESBO played a role as an extending agent level of epoxy adhesive, and we were able to know that in order to utilize ESBO as an adhesive, a study should be performed on the condition of hardening, inducible of the hardening reaction.

  • Plasticized cellulose diacetate(CDA) was prepared by homogenizing cellulose diacetate(CDA), triacetin(TA) and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) in a high-speed mixer, then the CDA mixture was mixed with ramie fiber to produce a green composite material. In DMA analysis, the glass transition temperature of plasticized CDA and the composite was observed at $85\;^{\circ}C\;and\;140\;^{\circ}C$, respectively. A composite reinforced with alkali treated ramie fiber exhibited significantly higher mechanical properties, such as $15\;^{\circ}C$ increase in tensile strength as well as $41\;^{\circ}C$ increase in Young's modulus when compared with commercial polypropylene. In the SEM image analysis, much enhanced adhesion between plasticized CDA and alkali treated ramie fiber (AIRa) was observed.

  • In this study, ethyl cellulose (EC)/montmorilloniote(MMT) nanocomposite films plasticized with environmental-friendly plasticizer (BET, EBN, ESO) were prepared by melt process using Hakke mixer. The $T_g$ of plasticized EC films decreased from 122 to $71^{circ}C$ with the increase in the BET content up to 30 $wt\%$. The addition of 10 $wt\%$ epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) as the second plasticizer cause the further drop of $T_g$ from 81 to $61^{circ}C$. The plasticizer-effect of BET was better than that of EBN. When the plasticizer was added into the EC films, the mechanical properties of EC films was decreased, however the addition of monotmorillonite (MMT) into the EC films or the ring opening reaction of ESO plasticizer cause enhancement of mechanical properties.

  • Cellulose diacetate (CDA) was plasticized with triacetine (TA) and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) in a high speed mixer. Composites of plasticized CDA and zeolite were prepared by a melting process. The $T_g$ value, $106^{\circ}C$ of the plasticized CDA was confirmed by DMA analysis. The $T_g$ value of the CDA with 50% zeolite was $125^{\circ}C$. As the content of zeolite was increased from 10 to 50% the modulus of the composite was increased from 1.7to 3.6 GPa by two times over the plasticized CDA, and its tensile strength was increased to 62 MPa and then decreased down 51 MPa, and its elongation was increased to 10% and then decreased down 3.2%. In the SEM image, the compatibility between CDA and zeolite was observed. Increasing the amount of zeolite in the composites resulted in further enhancement of the $CH_3COOH$ absorption effects.
