This experimental study was performed to investigate the antifungal effects of mixture of Sophorac Subprostratae Radix, Aconti Radix, and Hibisci Syriaci Cortex by the three types of extraction in the dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. The following results were obtained by using Minimum Inhibition Concentration(MIC) and Inhibition Zone. 1. MIC on Trichophyton mentagrophytes in Sample S-2, Sample S-3, and Sample-Y were 10${\mu}l$, respectively, showing the highest antifungal effect. 2. MIC on Epidermophyton floccosum in Sample S-2, Sample S-3, and Sample-Y were 10㎕ respectively, showing the highest antifungal effect. 3. MIC on Trichophyton rubrum in Sample S-3, Sample-Y were 10${\mu}l$ respectively, showing the highest antifungal effect. 4. The size of inhibition zone on Trichophyton mentagrophytes for Sample S-3 were 22.3mm in 10${\mu}l$, showing the highest antifungal effect. 5. The size of inhibition zone on Epidermophyton floccosum for Sample S-3 was 34.3mm in 10${\mu}l$, showing the highest antifungal effect. 6. The size of inhibition zone on Trichophyton rubrum for Sample-Y was 26.5mm in 10${\mu}l$, showing the highest antifungal effect. Whereas. in extractions, that of Sample S-3 was 12.5mm in 10${\mu}l$, showing the highest antifungal effect. 7. From the above results, Sample S-3 on Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum and Sample-Y on Trichophyton rubrum showed the highest antifungal effects. This results suggests that vinegar extraction excels other extraction method using water or ethanol to measure the antifungal effect on dermatophytes. In addition, the result shows that the extract of herbal medicines can be used to tinea pedis and if further study is performed, the use of the extract of herbal medicines will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines. [NOTE] · S-S2 : 12-13w/v$\%$ Vinegar extract of mixture of Sophorae Subprostratae Radix, Aconti Radix, and Hibisci Syriaci Cortex. · S-S3 : 18-19w/v$\%$ Vinegar extract of mixture of Sophorae Subprostratae Radix, Aconti Radix, and Hibisci Syriaci Cortex. · S-Y : Miconazole nitrate

The present study is of ultra-fine structures of Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis and Epidermophyton floccosum by means of electron microscopy and reveals the following. 1. In contrast to the bacteria, the normal fungus contains nuclear membrane, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulun, distinct cell wall and cell membrane and secretory granules as observed in the higher plants and animals. 2. Thickening of the cell wall, inapparent cell wall, inapparent cell membrane with the appearance of electron thin area(ETA) and increase of inclusions were observed in the L-1 treated groups. 3. Thickening of cell wall and increase of ETA were more apparent in the Epidermophyton floccosum than the other groups. 4. Increase of electron thin area was thought to be associated with autolysis.
Thirty-three Mannich bases of 2,2'-methylene bis(3,4,6-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid) were synthesized as potential antimicrobial agents and tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum gypseum, Epidermophyton floccosum, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae in vitro. It was found that: 1) Compounds 24 and 22 were active against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis at the concn. of 1 $\mu$g/ml respectively; 2) Compounds 9 and 29 were active against Trichophyton rubrum at the concn. of 2 $\mu$g/ml respectively; 3) Compouns 9 and 30 were active against Microsporum gypseum at the concn. of 2 $\mu$g/ml respectively; 4) Compounds 6,9,13,15,21,28,29,31,33 and 34 were active against Epidermophyton floccosum at the concn. of 1 $\mu$g/ml respectively; 5) Compounds 6,9,18 and 28 were active against Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae at the concn. of 1 $\mu$g/ml respectively.
The fungistatic effects of extract and crystal (A) of Berberis Koreans Palibin, a common shrub in Korea, were obeserved and compared with undecylenic acid and vegetable oil. In vitro studies, the spores of fungi were inoculated on Sabouraud's glucose agar media which contained compounds of various concentration, and the growth of the fungi was observed for 3 weeks. The species of the fungi used in these experiments were Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum gypseum, Microsporum audouini, Microsporum canis, Microsporum nanum, Microsporum cookei, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton tonsurans and Trichophyton verrucosum. The results of the studies were as follows: 1. The growth of E. floccosum, M. audouni, M. canis, M. nanum, M. cookei, was inhibited in Sabouraud's glucose agar media containing extract and crystal (A) of Berberis Koreana Palibin 1 mg/ml.

Dermatophytes such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum are used in this study to confirm (a) The Dermatophytes could utilize the wool, cotton and nylon fiber as a nutrient source. (b) The degree of damage of fibers by the Dermatophytes growth. The results of the experiment are summarized as follows; 1. Dermatophytes could not utilize the wool, cotton and nylon fiber directly as a nutrient source without the exogenously applied nutrients. 2. It was presumed that Dermatophytes could utilize the knitted wool fabric as their nutrient source when nutrient was exogenously applied. since the knitted wool fabric was greatly damaged by T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum growth. 3. The tensile strength of knitted wool fabric was significantly decreased by T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum, but not by E. floccosum. However, the tensile strength of knitted nylon fabric was not particularly affected by the Dermatophytes. 4. The burst strength of knitted wool fabric was decreased by T. mentagrophytes ($77\%$). T. rubrum ($53\%$). and E. floccosum ($15\%$). Though the burst strength of knitted cotton fabric was decreased by Dermatophytes about $20\%$, that of knitted nylon fabric was not affected. 5. Observing the damaged wool fiber by scanning microscope, the inner part of wool fiber was permeated by T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum.
Antifungal activities of clove essential oil and its volatile vapour against dermatophytic fungi including Candida albicans, Epidermophyton floccosum. Microsporum audouinii, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Trichophyton rubrum were investigated. Both clove essential oil and its volatile vapour strongly inhibit spore germination and mycelial growth of the dermatophytic fungi tested. The volatile vapour of clove essential oil showed fungistatic activity whereas direct application of clove essential oil showed fungicidal activity.

This study was to investigate the antifungal activity of A. holophylla essential oil against dermatophytes, such as Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum, and to determine the potential effective compound as dermatitis treatment. To evaluate the potential antifungal activities of A. holophylla essential oil and its fractions, paper disc diffusion and agar dilution method tested with morphological observation. Also, their major constituents were analyzed by GC/MS. To determine synergic effects of active ingredient from A. holophylla essential oil were carried out by checkerboard microtiter plate testing. The morphological changes of the dermatophytes exposed to active fraction G4 were observed by electron microscopes. As the results, the highest activities were identified in the fraction containing ${\alpha}$-bisabolol. A mixture of ${\alpha}$-bisabolol and bornyl acetate showed the synergy effects, expressing high potential effects. Also, morphological observation using electron microscopes showed a dramatic changes of cell membrane of E. floccosum and T. rubrum exposed to fraction G4 containing ${\alpha}$-bisabolol. In conclusion, A. holophylla essential oil and its constituents were expected to be used as antifungal agent or raw material for dermatitis therapy.

This study was to investigate the antifungal activity of Larix kaempferi essential oil against dermatophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. The active components of L. kaempferi against dermatophytes were determined (characterized by GC-MS), and the morphological changes of the dermatophytes exposed to the L. kaempferi essential oil were observed by electron microscope. Main component of L. kaempferi essential oil was (-)-bornyl acetate. In antifungal activity tests, MIC of L. kaempferi crude oil was 125 ppm on every fungi and 100% (agar dilution method) at more than 500 ppm. By using SEM and TEM, the fungal morphology of E. floccosum exposed to the L. kaempferi essential oil was different from that of normal hyphal morphology. Hyphae exposed to the L. kaempferi essential oil was damaged with distorted and collapsed surfaces. In addition, there were destruction and disorganization of organelles in cytoplasm and collapse of cell membrane. Active antifungal components from L. kaempferi essential oil were identified as terpene alcohol compounds like (-)-${\tau}$-muurolol, (+)-terpinen-4-ol, ${\alpha}$-terpineol, and ${\alpha}$-cadinol.
This study was undertaken to investigate the activity or the water extract of Polygonum aviculare Linne in vitro. Some of the purely isolated strains or dermatophytes were inoculated on Sabouraud's dextrose agar medium containing different concentrations of the Polygonum extracts and their growth was observed for about two weeks at room temperature. Then we measured the sizes of fungal colony grown in various conditions and compared them with those of Sabouraud's medium as control to determine fungistatic effectiveness of the extract. For additional study, slide cultures on Sabouraud's dextrose medium and Sabouraud's media containing 3ml/10ml extract were performed with Epidermophyton floccosum to observe the growth of hyphae, sporulation and other mycological findings. 1. The growth of Epidermo-phyton floccosum was completely inhibited in the media containing 3ml/l0ml Polygonum extract. 2. Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and microsporum canis were completely inhibited in several strains of each specimen and a moderate inhibitory effect was observed in all of another strains in the media containing the 3ml/10ml extract. 3. In the slide culture of Epidormophyton floccosum the hypha was thin and more desiccated. The characteristic macroco-nidia formation was not observed on the media containing 3ml/10ml Polygonum extract as compared with those findings of Sabouraud's dextrose control medium.
