  • Every year influenza contributes to the death of 72 people in the South korea, 20,000 in the U.S. and perhaps millions worldwide. The swine fever so-called the noble flu A H1N1, a strain of the flu virus, which jumped species and burst into the human population in March and April of this year. The outbreak of 2009 novel H1N1 was the fourth in 100 years. Fortunately, it led to today's comparatively tame swine flu than the vicious 1918, which was original H1N1 pandemic flu virus, killed at least 40 million worldwide in an ongoing pandemic era. Although the 2009 H1N1 which is still in full swing, this global flu epidemic is already teaching scientists valuable lessons about pandemics. Evidence accumulated these days indicates that the 2009 H1N1 was not entirely new to all human immune systems. This article introduces only an outline for our better understanding the basic mechanisms of influenza and the vaccination about longstanding fears of that worst-case scenario engendered pandemic that are paying off today.

  • Recently, there has been a constant barrage of worms over the Internet. Besides threatening network security, these worms create an enormous economic burden in terms of loss of productivity not only for the victim hosts, but also for other hosts, as these worms create unnecessary network traffic. Further, measures taken to filter these worms at the router level incur additional network delays because of the extra burden placed on the routers. To develop appropriate tools for thwarting the quick spread of worms, researchers are trying to understand the behavior of worm propagation with the aid of epidemiological models. In this study, we present an optimization model that takes into account infection and treatment costs. Using this model we can determine the level of treatment to be applied for a given rate of infection spread.

  • Estimated number of adults and children newly infected with HIV-1 during 2001 alone is 5 million in total. An effective vaccine, in addition to education & public health approaches, has been believed to be the best option to stop the HIV-1 transmission, especially for developing countries. Among AIDS vaccine candidates, DNA vaccine is relatively safe and, in a certain extent, mimics some attributes of live attenuated vaccine, with regard to in vivo gene expression & the type of immunity induced. We recently demonstrated that DNA vaccines expressing SIVmac239 structural and regulatory genes, augmented with coadministration of IL-12 mutant induced the strongest T cell responses, resulting in low to undetectable setpoint viral loads, stable $CD4^+$ T cell counts, and no evidence of clinical diseases or mortality by day 420 after challenge. This finding is the second demonstration, following the protective result of live attenuated SIV vaccine in SIVmac-rhesus monkey model, which was known to have safety problem. So, our DNA vaccines could give a significant impact on HIV-1 epidemic by slowing or stopping the spread of HIV-1, leading to eventual eradication of HIV-1 and AIDS in the population.

  • This article reviewed the epidemic characteristics of AIDS during the period of 1985-1993 and its socio economic implications in Korea. The author discussed the principles of AIDS prevention measures through NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) programs and also introduced WHO recommended approaches of preventing AIDS which was declared 'AIDS Days '93'. December 1. 1993. The followings are the summary of articles. 1. The total number of HIV (+) were 313 cases. Male was 289, female was 34 by December 3D, 1993. 2. The number of AIDS patients were 16 cases, 14 out of 16 died and two are alive. 3. Principles of AIDS prevention measures; (1) Investment in health (2) Social and Political Commitment (3) Comprehensive Health Promotion Program (4) Respect for Human Dignity (5) Provide Safe Health Care Settings (6) Monitoring the AIDS epidemics (7) Meeting the challenge together

  • As we approach the completion of the first 25 years of the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) epidemic, there have been dramatic improvements in the care of patients with HIV infection. These have prolonged life and decreased morbidity. There are twenty currently available antiretrovirals approved in the United States for the treatment of this infection. The medications, including their pharmacokinetic properties, side effects, and dosing are reviewed. In addition, the current approach to the use of these medicines is discussed. We have included a section addressing common comorbid conditions including hepatitis B and C along with tuberculosis.

  • Trust models in the literature of MANETs commonly assume that packets have different security requirements. Before a node forwards a packet, if the recipient's trust level does not meet the packet's requirement level, then the recipient must perform certain security association procedures, such as re-authentication. We present in this paper an analysis of the epidemic broadcast delay in such context. The network, mobility and trust models presented in this paper are quite generic and allow us to obtain the delay component induced only by the security associations along a path. Numerical results obtained by simulations also confirm the accuracy of the analysis. In particular, we can observe from both simulation's and analysis results that, for large and sparsely connected networks, the delay caused by security associations is very small compared to the total delay of a packet. This also means that parameters like network density and nodes' velocity, rather than any trust model parameter, have more impact on the overall delay.

  • Objectives: This study is a cross-sectional study to investigate the frequency of humidifier and humidifier disinfectant usage in the general population. Methods: A questionnaire was applied to 94 subjects (46 male, 48 female) from the general population of Gyeonggi Province. The questionnaire consisted of 3 scales (general characteristics, 5 items about humidifier usage, 5 items about humidifier disinfectant usage). Results: Thirty-five (37.2%) of the 94 subjects use a humidifier and humidifier disinfectant usage was found to be 18.1%. The frequency of humidifier usage is 4.8 times per a week and the humidifier disinfectant usage is 2.4 times per a week. Humidifier usage rate was highest in January. and then tended to rise gradually from October. Conclusions: Although this study population was not representative, we can say that approximately 50 percent of the humidifier users use a humidifier disinfectant and the trend of using a humidifier has shown seasonality.

  • A brown leaf and stem spot disease of bayonet-grass (Scirpus maritimus) was epidemic in reclaimed paddy fields of Chunbuk province, Korea. A fungal pathogen was repeatedly isolated from the necrotic lesions of the bayonet-grass and identified as Nimbya scirpicola. The pathogen induced disease symptoms only in bayonet-grass but not in 8 other plants tested; Brassica pathogen induced disease symptoms only in bayonet-grass but not in 8 other plants tested; Brassica compestris subsp. napus var. pekinensis, Cucumis sativus, Glycine max, Hordeum vulgare, Lycopersicon esculentum, Oryza sativa, Sesamum indicum and Triticum aestivum. The fungus has potential to be developed as a mycoherbicide.

  • Bacterial canker of kiwifruit recently outbroke throughout the southcoast of Korea, the major production areas of kiwifruit. Some orchards were destroyed because of severe damage by the epidemics of the bacterial canker, especially in Jeju-si and Bukjeju-kun, Jeju and Goheung-kun and Wando-kun, Chonnam. The bacterial canker, which has been occurred in Jeju from the mid 1980s, was first observed in Haenam-kun, Chonnam in 1991. The disease outbroken throughout the southcoast of Korea caused extremely severe damages and the diseased areas are increasing continuously. The possibility that the bacterial canker was introduced from Japan into Jeju is high, although the path of the epidemic is still not clear. And then the bacterial canker may spread from Jeju to Haenam and/or Wando, from which the disease may spread to the southcoast of Chonnam and the westcoast of Kyungnam in Korea.
