  • The feeding habits of shotted halibut, Eopsetta grigorjewi, were studied by examining the stomach contents of 419 individuals. We collected E. grigorjewi samples using offshore gill net and bottom trawl in West Sea of Korea from January to December 2019. The specimens ranged in total length (TL) from 22.5 to 50.3 cm. The main prey organisms were Macrura and Pisces, while Brachyura, Ophiuroidea, Littorinimorpha and Paguridea were found small amounts. E. grigorjewi fed on Macrura in summer and autumn, and mainly fed on Pisces in winter and spring. Smaller individuals (<30 cm TL) consumed Macrura such as Crangon hakodatei. The proportion of these prey items decreased with increasing Pisces such as Ammodytes personatus and Engraulis japonicus. The feeding strategy of E. grigorjewi is estimated to maintain prey individual as they grow, but increase their prey weight.

  • Age and growth of shotted halibut Eopsetta grigorjewi were estimated using right sagittal otoliths of 389 fish specimens from February 2004 to January 2005 in the East China Sea. Examination of outer margins of the otolith showed that the opaque zone was formed once a year and annual rings were formed from December to March. The age of specimens examined ranged from 3 to 5 years. Shotted halibut begin spawning in February and show a peak in March. Length and weight relationships showed no significant difference between females and males (P>0.05), and can be expressed as TW=$0.5091{\times}10^{-2}TL^{3,222}(r^2=0.92)$. Estimated von Bertalanffy growth curve was $L_t=46.58(1-e^{-0.14(1+1.32)})$.

  • The roundnose flounder's (Eopsetta grigorjewi) spermiogenesis and fine structure of the spermatozoon were examined by means of the scanning and transmission electron microscopy, During the spermiogenesis, the chromatin of the spermatid became fine granular form, and progressively condensed into many large globules, finally homogeneously condensed in the spermatozoan head. The main characteristics of the spermiogenesis were the disappearanre of Golgi complex, the appearance of microfilament the reduction of mitochondria and the appearance of Iysosome in the cytoplasm. A spermatozoon consisted of head and tail, but the acrosome was absent. The cytoplasmic collar containing seven mitochondria was observed in the posterior part of the head. The well-developed axonemal lateral fins were observed in the tail. The cross section of the axial filament showed '9+2' axonemal structure of microtubules, and the numerous vesicles were observed in the cytoplasm.

  • Gross energy intake fecal, nitrogen excretory and metabolized energy of snotted halibut juvenile, Eopsetta grigorjewi, fed on Tigriopus iaponicus (Group A) and the enriched Artemia nauplii (Group B), were quantitatively investigated and represented as balance equations of energy and material. Absorption efficiency (AE), gross conversion efficiency $(K_1)$ and net conversion efnciency $(K_2)$ were also estimated to understand the changes in efficiency by the prey Gross energy intake, fecal, nitrogen excretory, metabolized and growth energy of Group A were $2.790\pm0.247,\;0.495\pm0.046,\;0.018\pm0.003,\;0.214\pm0.047\;cal\;mg^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ and $2.063\;cal\;mg^{-1}\;day^{-1},$ respectively. The same parameters of Group B were $4.801\pm0.165,\;0.579\pm0.031,\;0.055\pm0.010,\;0.306\pm0.048\;cal\;mg^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ and $3.861\;cal\;mg^{-1}\;day^{-1},$ respectively. Energy budget of Group A and B were represented as 100 C= 7.67 M+17.7 F+0.65 U+73.94 G and 100C=6.37 M+ 12.1 F+1.15 U+80.42 G, respectively, where C, M, F, U, and G represent gross energy intake, metabolized energy, fecal energy, nitrogen excretory (non-fecal) energy and growth energy, respectively. AEs of Croup A and B were $81.52\pm1.89,\;86.79\pm0.70\%,$ respectively, with significant difference at p=0.01 level. However, $K_1\;and K_2$ of Group A and B showed no significant difference at p=0.01 level, with $74.21\pm6.57,\;80.48\pm2.76\%\;and\;91.17\pm7.26,\;92.74\pm2.69\%$ respectively. These results suggest that T. japonicus is a possible substitute for Artemia nauplii for the snotted halibut juvenile.

  • Maturation and spawning of the Shotted halibut, Eopsetta grigorjewi was investigated based on the samples captured in South Korean waters from January 2008 to December 2009. Gonadosomatic index began to increase in December, and reached maximum between January to March. After spawning it began to decrease from May. Reproductive season was estimated to January-April, with peak in February. Fecundity was proportional to the size of the female, with the clutch size varying from 170,000 eggs in the smallest female (total length, 28.9cm) to 1,300,000 eggs in the largest (total length, 41.5cm). Size at 50% sexual maturity (TL50), determined from mature females, was 28.8cm. Annual reproductive cycles of this species could be divided into six successive stages; immature stage (May-October), nucleolus stage (November-January), yolk vesicle stage (January-February), vitellogenic and ripe stage (January-April) and spent stage (April-May).

  • The taxonomic revision of the flounders of the suborder Pleuronectoidei was made based on the specimens collected from the coasts of the Korean Peninsula from 1989 to 1993. The flounders of Korea are composed 34 species belonging to 24 genera and 4 families, and the keys to species, genera and families are provided with redescriptions and distributions. Three species of the flounders are found to be new to Korea : Tarphops oligolepis (Bleeker) of the family Paralichthyidae, Parabothus kiensis (Tanaka) of the family Bothidae and Pleuronectes pallasii Steindachner of the family Pleuronectidae. Laeops lanceolata, previously recorded in the Korean fish list, was found to be synonym of L. kitaharai. The fishes of the families Paralichthyidae and Bothidae were distributed in the Yellow Sea and the southern coast of Korea, while most of the flounder species of the family Pleuronectidae except Limanda yokohamae, Eopsetta grigorjewi, and Pleuronichthys cornutus were found along the eastern coast of Korea. It appears that Korean flounders are similar to those of Chinese and Japanese faunas which include tropical and temperate species without endemics.

  • The field experiments were carried out to examine for the mesh selectivity in trammel net and optimum mesh size, during Aug. 10~13, Non 9~13 2000 in Jumunjin, Kangwon-Do and during Jun. 1~27 2001 in Suyong-Bay, Busan. The experiments in Jumunjin area were conducted by using trammel nets with seven different mesh sizes (60, 75, 90, 105, 135, 150, 180mm) and those in Suyong-Bay were done by using trammel nets and gill nets with three different mesh sizes (60, 75, 90mm) in order to compare two types of nets of same structure. The mesh selectivity analysis was done mainly with flat fish(Eopsetta grigorjewi) that was occupied 60% out of total catches. And the mesh selectivity was written by extension of Kitahara's method included master curve with function type. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. Total number of catch by, trammel net was 2,331 and that of gill net was 1,433, and flat fishes occupied 59.8 ~60% in total catches. 2. The value of optimum l/m by, trammel net was higher about 0.1 than that of gill net according as trammel net was 2.56, and gill net was 2.47. 3. The 50% selection range by, trammel net was wider about 1.5 time than that of gill net according as trammel net was 1.88~3.36(1.48) and gill net was 2.00~3.02(1.02). 4. The optimum mesh size(OMS) was estimated that trammel net was about 141mm and gill net was about 132mm on first maturity length(FML) 265mm of flat fish. 5. On the optimum mesh size based on the first maturity length of flat fish, The 50% range by, trammel net was wider about 76mm than that of gill net according as trammel net was 265 mm~474mm and gill net was 265mm~398mm.

  • We found ten species of larvae belonging to the family Pleuronectidae as a result of analysis on ichthyoplankton collected monthly from the East Sea, Yellow Sea, Korea Strait and East China Sea between February 2016 and May 2018 using bongo net. The ten species of pleuronectid larvae were divided into three groups in morphology. Group A had three or four bars on the lateral side of the tail: Glyptocephalus stelleri, G. kitaharae, Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, and Hippoglossoides dubius. Group B had a row of melanophores along the dorsal and ventral side of tail: Cleisthenes pinetorum, Eopsetta grigorjewi, Dexistes rikuzenius, and Platichthys bicoloratus. Group C had dense melanophores which are covering trunk and tail entirely except caudal peduncle: Platichthys cornutus and Platichthys japonicus. The three groups did not associate with previous molecular phylogenetic studies except for the G. stelleri and G. kitaharae of the group A.
