A study was carried out to find out the biological contamination of beaches in Korea from May 16, to June 2, 1972. Turbidity was measured and coliform groups were examined by membrane filter method as well as general sanitary condition of beaches. Main findings were as follows: 1. The average coliform group count was 5.0 per 100 ml of tested water, and the range of coliform. group count was 0~120 out of 8 beaches, Chungmun beach was found to be the least contaminated while Daechun was the most contaminated (23. 3/100 ml), however, those beaches surveyed. were satisfactory as far as bacteriological contaminations were concerned. 2. The average coliform group count of water samples from rising tides was 2.8/100 ml. The range of coliform count from rising tide was 0~26/100 ml, and those from receding were 1~120/100 ml. 3. The average turbidity of the water in Korean western beaches was 5.0 ppm, while that of Chejudo was 2.0 ppm. of 8 beaches surveyed, the turbidity of Daechon beach was the highest (7.0 ppm). 4. Out of 8 beaches surveyed shower facilities existed at only 4 beaches (50%), however the drainages of showers and bath rooms were not sanitarily adequate.
Recently this writer has conducted a comprehensive survey of 38 private businesses where group feeding is practiced, with a view to determining the condition of nutrition intake by the blue collar workers of these businesses firms as well as gaining an indication of their facilities management along with their sanitary precautions. The survey has revealed, among others, a number of interesting data such as shown below. 1. There are a total of 1,054 workers being fed in groups daily at each of the above business companies, with only one nutrition specialist regardless of the number of workers to be fed or the number of times they are fed daily. The average number of cooks comes to 2.7 persons per 100 workers, while 42.2% of the companies provide four meals a day including mid-night supper, with the result that the workers are fed 3.13 times a day on an average. 2. The average feeding cost amounts to 151 won per meal per person, of which 86 won is payed by the workers themselves and 115 won by the companies involved. 3. The average fbod intake has been found to be 490 grams which can be further broken down into 44grams of animal food and 446grams of vegetable food. These figures are higher than those revealed by the 1975 investigation of the nation's average nutrition intake. 4. The survey also shows the daily calorie consumption per person to be as high as 896 calories including 37 grams of protein which is further broken down into 11 grams of animal protein and 26grams of vegetable protein. With respect to other types of nutrients excepting Vitamin-A, the companies concerned are believed to prorids more than what the survey of the nation's nutrition has revealed or the amount recommended by Korea FAO assoc!ation as desirable. 5. As for facilities management, there is still much room for future improvement. Some 97.4% of the companies surveyed are not equipped with the steam table, which indicates lack of concern along this line as well as a very how degree of equipment utilizations. Distribution of the food in the dining room is generally depedent on self-service method. 6. Speaking of sanitary precautions taken by those businesses involved, some 76.3% are found to have their compounds haunted by rats and other insects. Some 73.7% of them are dependent on boiling method for disinfection of kitchen utensils, which is conducted by 50% of those industries only two or three times a week. It seems hardly feasible to conduct disinfection everyday.
Leachate is a result of the percolation of precipitation, uncontrolled runoff, and irrigation water into the landfill and can also include water initially contained in the waste as well as infiltrating groundwater. Behaviour of leachate by rainfall was studied to evaluate the variation of leachate generation and contaminants by rainfall in Sudokwon Landfill from January 1998 to October 1998. The quantity of leachate generated was measured with a flow meter, and the concentrations $BOD_5$, CODcr, T-N, $NE_3-N$, SS of leachate were also measured. Principal outcome obtained in this study are as follows : the quantity of leachate generated was the highest on August, the highest leachate generation volume in this period was 11,913㎥ and the lowest was $6,261m^3$. Although the similar amount of precipitation of 80mm applied to the two samples, there were difference in leachate generation due to precipitation duration, precipitation frequency, wet condition of solid wastes. As the result of regression analysis, the correlation coefficients(r) between the quantity of leachate generated and precipitation were 0.823, 0.976 between $BOD_5$ and CODcr, 0.992 between T-N and $NE_3-N$. As the quantity of leachate generated increased 48%, the concentration of $BOD_5$ and CODcr decreased 51% and 50% respectively. Therefore it was showed that the pollutant concentrations in leachate were diluted by precipitation. The concentrations of $BOD_5$ and COBcr in the rainy season were 2000~4000mg/1, 4000~6000mg/1 respectively, and 1000~3000 mg/1, 3000~5000 mg/l in the dry season. The loading of SS, $BOD_5$, CODcr(kg/month) on July was increased by 2.9 times, 2.8 times, 2.2 times with a basis on March. Therefore countermeasure of treatment facilities according to increase of loading by rainfall in summer is necessary.
This survey was carried out for a month from Jan. 15th, 1979 to Feb, 15th, 1979 to study the sanitary environments of the "book-lending" shops (comic-book shops) in Inchon area, and the special emphasis was placed on their illumination and carbon monoxide gas, which plays an important part in the whole sanitary environment. 120 shops surveyed were chosen at random from 4 administrative districts, 30 shops from one district respectively. The results of the survey were as follows:1) The average space of the book-lending shops (63.3%) was 2.0~3.9 pyung, at 21 number of shops (17.5%) was 1.0~1.9 pyung, at 53 number of shops (10.8%) was 4.0~5.9 pyung, at 9 number of shops (7.5%) was 6.0~7.9 pyung. 2) The ages of 42.8 percent of the whole 888 customers range from 10 to 14 and those of 36.5 percent from 15 to 19, and those of 11.9 percent from 20 to 24, and 89.2 percent were male and 10.8 percent were females and the percent of spending time in shops was shown 10.2% in under 1 hr, 25.4% in 1 hr to 2 hrs, 46.5% in 2 hrs to 3 hrs and 17.8% in over 3 hrs. 3)The CO pollution was quite different by shops where the ventilator was equipped and where not equipped. In the shops equipped shown 36 shops (80.8%) and non-equipped shown 65 shops (86.7%), the pollution ratio of all the shops (120 shops) was 84.2 percent. 4) The CO Concentration of the ventilator equipped shops was shown 44.5 percent in 100~149 ppm, 150~199 ppm shown 33.3 percent and 22.2 percent was 200~250 ppm, In the non-equipped shops the CO concentration was shown 36.9 percent was 150~199 ppm and 200~250 ppm was 25.6 percent. The totally was 39.6 percent in 100~149 ppm. 5) 37.5 percent of the book-lending shops had the ventilation facilities but 62.6 percent had no ventilators. 6) The maxmum average illumination of the shops was 38.5 Lux and the minimum average illumination was 14.1 Lux, and the mean average illumination S.D. was 24.6\pm38.4. 7) 35.8 percent of the shops had the illumination of 20~29 Lux and 8.3 percent had that of more than 40 Lux. In other words 91.7 percent had the illumination of less than 40 Lux.
The incineration process has commonly used for wastes amount reduction and thermal treatments of pollutants as the technologies accumulated. However, the process is getting negative public images owing to matter of hazardous pollutants emission. Specially dioxins became a main issue and were mostly emitted from municipal solid wastes incineration. In this reason, pyrolysis/gasification/melting process is presented as an alternative of incineration process. The pyrolysis/gasification/melting process, a novel technology, is middle of verification of commercial plant and development of technologies in Korea. But the survey about the pollutant emission from the process, and background data in these facilities is necessary. So in this survey, t is investigated that the behavior of chlorobenzenes and chlorophenols in plasma type pyrolysis/gasification/melting plant of pilot scale. We investigated discharging behavior of each phase of chlorobenzene through each process in the plsasma type pyrolysis/gasification/melting process. From this result, it was found that about 99 percent of particle-phase chlorobenzene was removed, but on the other hand gas-phase chlorobenzene was increased by about 600 percent through heat exchanger, flue gas cooling, system and semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). Also, this investigation presented that di-chlorobenzene(DCB) tri-chlorobenzene(TCB), tetra-chlorobenzene(TeCB), penta-chlorobenzene (PCB), except mono-chlorobenzene(MCB) and hexa-chlorobenzene(HCB) were increased through the flue gas cooling system and the semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). It was investigated that concentration of particle-phase chlorophenol was decreased by about 66 percent, but on the other hand, concentration of gas-phase chlorophenol was increased by about 170 percent through heat exchanger, flue gas cooling system, and semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). Also, it was found that di-chlorophenol(DCP), tri-chlorophenol(TCP), and penta-chlorophenol(PCP) were increased through the flue gas cooling system, and the semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). It can be considered that small-scale pilot facility and short investigation period might cause the concentration increase through the flue gas cooling system and the semi dry absorption bag filter(SDA/BF). A further study on real-scale pilot facility and accurate investigation may be required.

Many industrialized countries are confronted with a difficulty about reuse of closed waste landfill. facilities. Especially, the demand of closed waste landfill maintenance and reuse nearby urban area has been increased, because of the shortage of usable land and extend of urban area. For the safe reuse of closed waste landfill, the most important check point is the effect of waste landfill on environment abound them. However, the non-sanitary closed waste landfill generally have no leachate lining system, therefore, the in-situ lining system such as sheet-pile, and vertical slurry wall etc. was needed to prevent the leachate outgoing from the waste landfill. In this paper present the case history of performance evaluation of vertical slurry wall by tracer tests.
For the last decade the amount of waste has rapidly been increased in South Korea and many waste landfills have been built according to government guidelines specifying required systems such as landfill liner, leachate collecting facilities, final cover system, etc. This effort has led the recently constructed landfills to be under well managed sanitary condition. In a meanwhile closed waste-landfill sites in the past before the adoption of the government guidelines exits under unsanitary condition. In these cases untreated leachate flew out to the surroundings due to the absence of liner and leachate collecting facilities and caused groundwater and soils to be contaminated. Waste generated odor and gas also brought civil complaints. Because environmental influences bring serious problems nearby sites, it is required to have unsanitary waste-landfills to be appropriately treated and managed. A study to evaluate environmental influence and contamination level of surroundings nearby and on the unsanitary landfills is necessary before the establishment of "Management guide of closed landfill site." This paper presents an environmental evaluation for the closed site, Doil-dong landfill, according to "Closed landfill management regulation" by Ministry of Environment. "D" landfill, located in Pyeongtaek city, has possobility to contaminate surrounding surfacewater and groundwater by leakage of leachate. The in-situ stabilization carried out to build the DMW(deep soil mixing cutoff wall) wall and drainage systems.
This study was conducted to examine the environmental status, FIM(Function Independence Measure), Illness intrusiveness of home stayed stroke patients. Data were collected on 145 patients living in K city and the neighborhood located in southern part of Korea. The data were analyzed by means of SPSS program. Results : In assessment of environmental safety, 46.2%(67) felt unsafe around their residential area. The most dangerous facilities in their residence was stairs(58.2%), gas/electric facilities(14.9%). For sanitary problems, 28.2%(41) felt they have problems at their home. The most important problems were outdoor polluted toilet(22.0%) and scattered and dirty residential circumstances(22.0%). The average FIM score was 74.52(4.14) of total score 126(7). In motor area FIM was lowest at stair walking(3.01) and bathing(3.16). In cognitive area FIM was lowest at social activities(3.36). The mean score of Illness intrusiveness was 58.86(4.52) of total score 91(7). The major area largely impacted by stroke were health(5.61), working(5.68), active leisure activities(5.56). There was significant reverse correlation between FIM and illness intrusiveness(r=-0.66, p=0.00). Conclusion : It was needed environmental improvement and rehabilitation program for stroke patients, and repeated follow up study.
This studies were carried out to investigate the high infection sites from various specimens, cultural isolation on the susceptible media and specific antibody titres of M. pulmonis in experimental 310 mice and 330 rats obtained from two breeding facilities. Efficiency of complement faxation test (CF test) for detection of M. pulmonis antibody in mice and rats were compared directly with the diagnostic cultural isolation method. 1. Isolation rates of M. pulmonis among infection sites were about 30% from the oral cavities and $40\%$ from the middle ear of mice. The rates were $100\%$from the nasal cavaties and $90\%$ from the oral cavities of rats. 2. The infection rates were $12\%$ to A group and $16\%$ to B group of mice. The rates in the rats were $55\%$ to A group and $70\%$ to B group. 3. The M. pulmonis antibody titres by CF test were $73\%$ of total 100 mice in serum dilution below 1:5 (< 1:5), and $24\%$ of total samples in antibody titres above 1:5 (> 1:5), but 3 samples were not showed anticomplementary activities. The antibody titres in rats were $35\%$ of 120 rats in below 1:5 (< 1:5), and $61\%$ of total samples in above 1:5 (> 1:5), but the remained were not showed anticomplementary activities.
Health Impact Assessment based on municipal law is performed and written in the sanitary and public health part in the current environmental impact assessment. Residential development projects such as housing site development etc., are not subject to health impact assessment under Article 13 of the Environmental Health Act. However, health impact assessment is conducted partially based on the review that health impact assessment targets which are identified among substances emitted from pollutants nearby industrial complexes should be assessed risk (including carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) at the stage of the environmental impact assessment consultation. Although residential development projects do not have plans for pollutant emitting facilities that emit hazardous air pollutants, there is a possibility that residents might be affected by pollutants from industrial complex near residential area in the future. In this study, Health impact assessment was conducted to examine the impact on residents in planned areas by analyzing previous residential development projects. We predicted future impact by using the literature survey results on surrounding area (case1) and conducting contribution analysis (case2) and predicting exposure concentration of carcinogenic substances applying Atmospheric Diffusion Model (AERMOD). By this study, we concluded that applying on-site survey, contribution analysis and prediction of exposure concentration by using AERMOD complementarily will be effective to assess the health impact to the receptors by pollutants from industrial complexes near the planned zone.
