Low-temperature adaptation and protection for environmental stresses were studied in the gram-negative soil bacterium Bradyrhizobium japonicum 61A101c. B. japonicum was more resistant to alcohol, $H_2O_2$, heat and freezing following a pretreatment at $4^{\circ}C$, resulting in approximately 10 to 1,000 folds increased survival compared to mid-exponential-phase cells grown at an optimal temperature at $28^{\circ}C$. This phenomena relate to the cold shock protein expressed when cells are exposed to a downshift in temperature. To confirm the presence of cold shock protein genes in B. japonicum, a PCR strategy was employed using a degenerate primer set, which successfully amplified a putative csp gene fragment. Sequence analysis of the PCR product(200bp) revealed csp-like sequences that were up to 96% identical to csp gene of S. typhimurium.
The development of new strategies for vaccine delivery for generating protective and long-lasting immune responses has become an expanding field of research. In the last years, it has been recognized that bacteriophages have several potential applications in the biotechnology and medical fields because of their intrinsic advantages, such as ease of manipulation and large-scale production. Over the past two decades, bacteriophages have gained special attention as vehicles for protein/peptide or DNA vaccine delivery. In fact, whole phage particles are used as vaccine delivery vehicles to achieve the aim of enhanced immunization. In this strategy, the carried vaccine is protected from environmental damage by phage particles. In this review, phage-based vaccine categories and their development are presented in detail, with discussion of the potential of phage-based vaccines for protection against microbial diseases and cancer treatment. Also reviewed are some recent advances in the field of phagebased vaccines.
For improving high-safety, convenience, and ride comfort, the automotive design suffers from radical increase of the weight, the recycling-related rules, regulations on the waste gas, and environmental protection of the resources. Among them, it is well known that the weight increase is the most critical. Thus, in order to minimize the weight of the body-in-white that takes up 20-30% of the whole weight of the automobile, most automotive manufacturers have attempted to develop the aluminum intensive body-in-white using aluminum space frames. In this research, the crush test and simulation for aluminum extrusions are performed to evaluate the collapse characteristics of that light weighted material. Also. the same test and simulation was done for aluminum extrusions filled with structural foam. Then, these results are analyzed and compared. From these studies, the effectiveness of structural foam is evaluated in improving automotive crashworthiness. Finally, the design strategy and guideline of the structural form are suggested in order to improve the crashworthiness for aluminum space frame in the vehicle.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation measures on the fired woodland of Chesuk-bong in Mt. Chiri through the vegetation structure and comparison of growth pattern between natural seedlings and transplanted Abies koreana seedlings. It was also discussed the rate of standing and fallen trees of dead conifers in the management strategy for vegetation regeneration and protection of sub-alpine area. In this fired woodland, shrub layers consisting of Weigela subsessilis, Sambucus williamsii var. coreana, Rhododendron schlippenbachii, R. mucronulatum, Tripterygium regelii, and etc. were gradually expanded, and tree species such as Betula ermani, Sorbus commixta, Acer pseudosieboldianum, and Malus baccata var. mandshurica were also regenerated. The growth of height and crown width of Abies koreana seedlings transplanted for vegetation regeneration were a little lower than those of natural seedlings. The seedlings of A. koreana transplanted in this fired woodland grew about 50.6% normally, but the others had multi-branched or growth stopped by death of terminal shoot. Because the number of dead conifers by fire tend to be gradually increased as time passed, it can occurs to the soil erosion and landslide by weakness of the cohesion and resistance of soil. Therefore, it is consider that rehabilitation measures projects of the fired woodland in subalpine area may be more prevention a natural disaster like soil erosion, flood and landslide.

Heme oxygenase(HO)-1 is an important antioxidant enzyme that plays a pivotal role in cellular adaptation and protection in response to a wide array of noxious stimuli. Thus, HO-1 induction has been associated with prevention or mitigation of pathogenesis of various diseases, including acute inflammation, atherosclerosis, degenerative diseases, and carcinogenesis. Recent progress in our understanding of the function of molecules in the cellular signaling network as key modulators of gene transcription sheds light on the molecular mechanisms underlyuing HO-1 gene expression. A panel of redox-sensitive transcription factors such as activator protein-1, nuclear factor-kB, and nuclear factor E2-related factor-2, and some of the upstream kinases have been identified as prime regulators of HO-1 gene induction. This review summarizes molecular mechanisms underlying HO-1 expression and the significance of targeted induction of HO-1 as a potential chemopreventive or chemoprotective strategy.
Urban flood management(UFM) strategy ought to consider the connections and interactions between existing and new infrastructures to manage stormwater and improve the capacity to treat water. It is also important to demonstrate strategies that can be implemented to reduce the flow at flooding sources and minimize flood risk at critical locations. Although the general theory of spatial impact is popular, modeling guidelines that can provide information for implementation in real-world plans are still lacking. Under such background, this study conducted a modeling research based on an actual target site to confirm the hypothesis that it is appropriate to install green infrastructure(GI) in the source area and to take structural protection measures in the impact area, as summarized in previous studies. The results of the study proved the hypothesis, but the results were different from the hypothesis depending on which hydrological performance indicators were targeted. This study will contribute to demonstrating the effectiveness of strategies that can be implemented to reduce the flow at flooding sources and minimize the risk of flooding in critical locations in terms of spatial planning and regeneration.

Most of the islands of Korea are distributed in the South and West Sea, and it consists of independent small stream. As a result, the fish community that inhabits the island's stream is isolated from the mainland and other island. This study utilized a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and a random forest model to analyze the relationship between environmental variables and fish communities inhabiting islands in South Korea. Through the SOM analysis, the fish communities were divided into three clusters, and there were differences in biotic and abiotic factors between these groups. Cluster I consisted of sites with relatively larger island areas and a higher number of species and population. It was found that 15 out of 16 indicator species were included. Meanwhile, the remaining clusters had fewer species and populations. Cluster II, especially, showed the lowest impact from physical variables such as water width and depth. As a result of predicting the species richness using the random forest model, physical variables in habitats, such as stream width and water depth, had a relatively higher importance on species richness. On the other hand, forest area was the most important variables for predicting Shannon diversity, followed by maximum water depth, and gravel. The results suggest that this study can be used as basic data for establishing a stream ecosystem management strategy in terms of conservation and protection of biological resources in streams of islands.
The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the impact of engine load on the emission characteristics of excavator engines, with the aim of improving the method for calculating the emission inventory of construction machinery. The engine load in excavators is directly correlated with the operational workload, and variations in the load factor (LF) can significantly influence the emission inventory. Thus, on-board diagnostic (OBD) data from an excavator at a construction site were systematically collected to measure engine output and emissions. The results revealed discernible differences in emissions based on engine load, even when the average excavator engine performance remained constant. This highlights the significant influence of the type and characteristics of the work being carried out on emission characteristics. Making realistic adjustments to the LF used in emission calculation formulas emerges as a crucial strategy for environmental improvement. Moreover, the analysis of the effects of engine load on emissions from excavators provides valuable insights for enhancing environmental protection measures.
