Background: The roots of Panax ginseng contain noble tetracyclic triterpenoid saponins derived from dammarenediol-II. Dammarene-type ginsenosides are classified into the protopanaxadiol (PPD) and protopanaxatriol (PPT) groups based on their triterpene aglycone structures. Two cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes (CYP716A47 and CYP716A53v2) are critical for the production of PPD and PPT aglycones, respectively. CYP716A53v2 is a protopanaxadiol 6-hydroxylase that catalyzes PPT production from PPD in P. ginseng. Methods: We constructed transgenic P. ginseng lines overexpressing or silencing (via RNA interference) the CYP716A53v2 gene and analyzed changes in their ginsenoside profiles. Result: Overexpression of CYP716A53v2 led to increased accumulation of CYP716A53v2 mRNA in all transgenic roots compared to nontransgenic roots. Conversely, silencing of CYP716A53v2 mRNA in RNAi transgenic roots resulted in reduced CYP716A53v2 transcription. HPLC analysis revealed that transgenic roots overexpressing CYP716A53v2 contained higher levels of PPT-group ginsenosides ($Rg_1$, Re, and Rf) but lower levels of PPD-group ginsenosides (Rb1, Rc, $Rb_2$, and Rd). By contrast, RNAi transgenic roots contained lower levels of PPT-group compounds and higher levels of PPD-group compounds. Conclusion: The production of PPD- and PPT-group ginsenosides can be altered by changing the expression of CYP716A53v2 in transgenic P. ginseng. The biological activities of PPD-group ginsenosides are known to differ from those of the PPT group. Thus, increasing or decreasing the levels of PPT-group ginsenosides in transgenic P. ginseng may yield new medicinal uses for transgenic P. ginseng.
Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been widely used in environmental monitoring of gaseous species in the past decade. TDLAS is a direct measurement technique for pollutants such as NOx without any interference from other species. Because of its superior spectral purity (~0.001 $cm^{-1}$), absorption linewidths with resolvable rotational structure can be studied in the mid infrared region where strong fundamental vibrational transitions of molecules appear. Background: Cardiac pacemakers are known to be susceptible to strong electromagnetic fields (EMFs). This in vivo study investigated occurrence of electromagnetic interference with pacemakers caused by common environmental sources of EMFs. Methods: Eleven volunteers with a pacemaker were exposed to EMFs produced by two mobile phone base stations, an electrically powered commuter train, and an overhead high voltage transmission lines. All the pacemakers were programmed in normal clinically selected settings with bipolar sensing and pacing configurations. Results: None of the pacemakers experienced interference in any of these exposure situations. However, often it is not clear whether or not strong EMFs exist in various work environments, and hence an individual risk assessment is needed. Conclusions: Modern pacemakers are well shielded against external EMFs, and workers with a pacemaker can most often return to their previous work after having a pacemaker implanted. However, an appropriate risk assessment is still necessary after the implantation of a pacemaker, a change of its generator, or major modification of its programming settings.
Auto-ID industries and their services have been improved since decades ago, and radio frequency identification (RFID) has been contributing in many applications. Product management can be the foremost example. In our industrial experiences, RFID in ultra high frequency (UHF) band provides much longer interrogation ranges than that of 13.56MHz; many more applications exist thereby. There should be several interesting and useful ideas on UHF RFID; however, those ideas can be limited due to the inevitable environmental circumstances that restrict the interrogation range in shorten value. This paper discusses the propagation interference among different types of readers (e.g, mobile RFID readers in stationary reader zone) in dense-reader environment. In most cases, UHF RFIDs in Korea will be dependent on the UHF mobile RFIDs. In this sense, the UHF mobile users accidently move into the stationary reader's interrogation zone. This is serious problem. In this paper, we analyze propagation loss and propose the effective channel allocation scheme that can contribute developing less-invasive UHF RFID networks. The simulation and practical measurement process using the commercial CAD tools and measurement equipments are presented.
Several frameworks for the dynamic analysis of wind-vehicle-bridge systems were presented in the past decade to study the safety or ride comfort of road vehicles as they pass through bridges under crosswinds. The wind loads on the vehicles were generally formed based on the aerodynamic parameters of the stationary vehicles on the ground, and the wind loads for the pure bridge decks without the effects of road vehicles. And very few studies were carried out to explore the dynamic effects of the aerodynamic interference between road vehicles and bridge decks, particularly for the moving road vehicles. In this study, the aerodynamic parameters for both the moving road vehicle and the deck considering the mutually-affected aerodynamic effects are formulized firstly. And the corresponding wind loads on the road vehicle-bridge system are obtained. Then a refined analytical framework of the WVB system incorporating the resultant wind loads, a driver model, and the road roughness in plane to fully consider the lateral motion of the road vehicle under crosswinds is proposed. It is shown that obvious lateral and yaw motions of the road vehicle occur. For the selected single road vehicle passing a long span bridge, slight effects are caused by the aerodynamic interference between the moving vehicle and deck on the dynamic responses of the system.
The aim of this study is to develop guidelines for predicting interference between drones and wakes during non-destructive blade inspections in wind power systems. The wake generated by wind towers and blades can affect the stability of drone flights, necessitating the establishment of guidelines to ensure safe and efficient inspections. In order to predict the interference between drones and blades, environmental variables must be considered, including quantification of turbulence intensity in the wake generated by the tower and blades, as well as determining the appropriate distance between the drone and the tower/blades for flight stability. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed using cross-sectional geometries corresponding to the main wind turbine blade and tower span locations. Based on the CFD analysis results, a safe flight path for drones is proposed, which minimizes the risk of collision and interference with towers and blades during maintenance operations of wind power systems. Implementation of the proposed guidelines is expected to enhance the safety and efficiency of maintenance work.
Since Korea has a small land area, it is expected to construct the conductor return type with neutral wire in the case of ${\pm}500kV$ HVDC double bipole transmission line. Therefore, in order to apply ${\pm}500kV$ HVDC double bipole transmission line with neutral wire in Korea, it is necessary to develop technology for insulation and environmental designs. In this study, radio interference, audible noise, electric field and ion current density according to the polarity arrangement were compared and assessed in the ${\pm}500kV$ HVDC double bipole transmission line with the conductor return method. And the optimum configuration of HVDC double bipole transmission line was determined from the viewpoint of electrical environment.
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the noise level and source, reduce the subway line II noise. As a result of measurement of subway line II in Busan the highest value section of uproad line was from Jigegol to Motgol by 89 dB(A). The sections of conversation and listening interference(over 80 dB(A)) were 21 sections(55%) of 38 sections. Among these sections, 15 sections(71%) were produced rolling noise, 3 sections(14%) squeal noise, 2 sections(10%) braking noise and 1 section(5%) fan noise, and then a main noise source was the rolling noise. In case of downroad line, the highest value section was from Busan Metro Art Museum to Centum city, Motgol to Jigegol by 88 dB(A). The sections of conversation and listening interference(over 80 dB(A)) were 18 sections(47%) of 38 sections. Among these sections, 15 sections(83%) produced rolling noise, 2 sections(11%) squeal noise and 1 section(6%) braking noise were investigated in this study. and then a main noise source was the rolling noise.
The present study represents the effects of boundary condition on the performance of a centrifugal blower at the interference plane between rotational and stationary domains using three dimensional compressible Navier-Stocks equations. Two boundary conditions, frozen-rotor and stage, are compared to analyze the blower performance. Installation angle between the cutoff of a volute casing and a impeller blade is also introduced to evaluate the blower performance and to understand the internal flow inside the blower. Throughout numerical simulation, it is found that the frozen rotor interface method at the interference plane represents well the variations of flow field inside the blower compared to stage interface method. However, pressure has maximum two percent error according to the installation angles while pressure is almost constant for the stage interface method. And stage interface method can relatively well predict the blower performance. Detailed internal flows of the centrifugal blower are compared and analyzed by numerical simulation.
