  • Samples from Naktong Estuary had been taken for the characterization of heterotrophic bacterial communities and of the effects of environmental factors on their distribution in estuarine ecosystem. Bacterial communities isolated from seawater region were composed of more euryhalone groups than those from freshwater region, and the bacterial communities of summer were composed of more eurythermal groups than those of winter. Bacterial commnities became more diverse by the input of allochthonous bacteria from terrestrial and freshwater ecosystem, but less diverse by worse environmental conditions such as nutrient load, high salinity, low temperature, and so on.

  • An attempt has been in this study to delineate the characteristics of spectral signatures of the vegetation in terms of various VIs, particularly made the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI), Modified Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index2(MSAVI2) and Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI). Multitemporal SPOT-4 VEGETATION data from 1998 to 2002 have been used for the analysis. They have been compared with each other for their similarities and differences. The correlations between the vegetation indices observed at various degree of vegetation coverage during their different stages of growth were examined. All of the VIs have shown qualitative relationships to variations in vegetation. Apparently, the NDVI and MSAVI2 are highly correlated for all of the temporal changes, representing the different stages of phenology.

  • An apartment complex is a building use with great potential to contribute to solving problems related to urban ecological environment and climate change. The first goal of this study is to grasp the current situation of application and limitations of the ecological area rate, which is a representative evaluation index used to evaluate the environmental performance of the external space of an apartment complex in Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design (G-SEED). The second goal is to propose a prototype of the evaluation index for evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction performance in order to supplement the evaluation index for the environmental performance of the external space in terms of response to climate change. We analyzed 43 cases of apartment complexes certified according to G-SEED, which was enforced since July 1, 2010, and found application characteristics of each space type and the limitations of ecological area rate. We analyzed overseas green building certification systems such as LEED and BREEAM that derived implications for supplementing the limitations of ecological area rate, which is focused on the evaluation of soil and water circulation function, and set up a development direction of complementary measures. Through analysis of previous studies, relevant regulations and standards, and technical documents of the manufacturer, the heat island mitigation performance of the pavement and roof surfaces of the apartment complex and the carbon uptake performance of the trees in the apartment complex was selected as parameters to yield the GHG reduction performance of the external space of the apartment complex. Finally, a quantitative evaluation method for each parameter and a prototype of the evaluation index for the GHG reduction performance were proposed. As a result of applying the prototype to an apartment complex case, the possibility of adoption and applicability as an evaluation index of G-SEED were proved.

  • The purpose of this study is to diagnose the possibility of future drought expression by late March dryness in rice paddy areas using Terra MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). We tested the degree of dryness by comparing the 2000-2015 average NDVI with yearly NDVI, which we name DCI (Dry Condition Index). The 16-day interval DCIs from March 6 to May 25 were evaluated with spatio-temporal expression of South Korea. In particular, we find that the DCI for April 7 (March 23 to April 7) offered reasonable prediction of paddy dryness during drought years. The April 7 DCI value for dry conditions ranged from 0.04 to 0.08 while the DCI for normal conditions ranged from -0.04 to 0.01. The DCI can be one of the indicators used to evaluate the dryness of rice paddy areas at the beginning of the spring season.

  • This study developed a growth model for Larix leptolepis based on the WLS model to examine the effects of climate change on them. The site index was chosen as the dependent variable and location, weather, and edaphic factor were chosen as independent variables. Simulations were performed under three A1B climate change scenarios with the temperature ranging from $-3.3^{\circ}C$ to $+3.3^{\circ}C$. The simulation results showed that the site index decreased with peak at $-0.8^{\circ}C$. The decrease level of the site index by region was also analyzed. Each scenario, site index has decreased mostly but some region was increased. When the temperature increased up to $3^{\circ}C$, site index was decreased to everywhere.

  • In this study, we used marine environment assessment indices to evaluate impacts of various development projects on the marine environment. TheWaterQuality Index (WQI) was applied in the field of marine water quality and the Cleanup Index of Harmful Chemicals (CIHC), the Cleanup Index of Eutrophication (CIET), the Enrichment Factor(EF) were used in the field of marine sediment. In the field of marine benthic organisms, the Benthic Health Index (BHI) and the Benthic Pollution Index (BPI) were utilized. Each assessment index was calculated using the data observed in the development project, and its characteristics and usefulness were evaluated. The assessment method and criteria were clearly defined for WQI, CIHC, and BHI. Furthermore, through these indices, an integrated environment impact analysis was possible. Apart from the indices presented in this study, there are various indices that can be used for evaluating the marine environment. Therefore, it is important to utilize appropriate indices according to the characteristics of each project.

  • Defense M&S(Modeling & Simulation) requires weapon effectiveness index which indicates Ph(Probability of hit) and Pk(Probability of kill) values on various impact and environmental conditions. The index is usually produced by JMEM(Joint Munition Effectiveness Manual) development process, which calculates Pk based on the impact condition and circular error probable. This approach requires experts to manually adjust the index to consider the environmental factors such as terrain, atmosphere, and obstacles. To reduce expert's involvement, this paper proposes a meta-model based method to produce weapon effectiveness index. The method considers the effects of environmental factors during calculating a munition's trajectory by utilizing high-resolution weapon system models. Based on the result of Monte-Carlo simulation, logistic regression model and Gaussian Process Regression(GPR) model is respectively developed to predict Ph and Pk values of unobserved conditions. The suggested method will help M&S users to produce weapon effectiveness index more efficiently.

  • In order to investigate the effect of variation characteristics of compression index on the spatial distribution of consolidation settlement, this study presents the estimation methods of the distribution of consolidation settlement and compares the estimated settlements. When the variation of compression index is considerable, the ordinary cokriging is more reliable in estimating the compression index than ordinary kriging because smoothing effect of ordinary cokriging is smaller than that of ordinary kriging. The spatial distribution of consolidation settlement estimated by considering both the variation of compression index and void ratio (CASE-1) is different from that estimated by using the mean value of all soil properties (CASE-2). The settlement of CASE-1 shows the larger variation at short distances rather than that of CASE-2. Whereas the spatial settlement distribution of CASE-1 is affected by the spatial distributions of compression index as well as the thickness of consolidation layer, that of CASE-2 is significantly influenced by the distribution of consolidation layer thickness.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to review measurements of environmental health behavior and assess the construct validity of Environmental Health Engagement Profile (EHEP) through confirmatory factor analysis. Methods: The literature review was performed for selection of measurements. Confirmatory factor analysis with AMOS 19.0 was used for validation of EHEP. Results: The model fitness was not appropriate in the one-factor model; $x^2=91.11$ (df=5, p<.001), Comparative Fit Index (CFI)=8.19, Non Normed Fit Index (NNFI)=6.39, and Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA)=0.20. The model fitness was appropriate in the two-factor model; $x^2=3.19$ (df=1, p=.074), CFI=9.95, NNFI= 9.71, RMSEA=0.07. A modification of scale was found to be the most suitable for use in the investigation of environmental health behavior. Conclusion: This study confirms that a two-factor model underlies the concept of environmental health behavior. The review of measurements can help nurses and researchers to assess the environmental health behaviors.

  • Kang et al. (1999) computed a composite environmental index in Korea by practicing the survey for environmental experts. They used the weighted sum form among feasible aggregation forms. In this study, we carry out the survey for both experts and non-experts to see the degree of differences of the weights for nine types of environmental problems between two groups. In addition, we apply different aggregation forms such as linear sum, weighted sum, root-sum-power, root-mean-square forms and compare these four outcomes. We found no significant discrepancy in the trends of composite indices. In case we rely on the weights provided by the experts, the composite index, on average, has been increased annually by about 7.2% over the 1986~1997 period, which informs us that overall environmental quality in 1997 has been worse than in 1986 by about 1.8 times.
