We have studied the environmental effect on optical-NIR color gradients of 273 nearby elliptical galaxies. Color gradient is a good tool to study the evolutionary history of elliptical galaxies, since the steepness of the color gradient reflects merging history of early types. When an elliptical galaxy goes through many merging events, the color gradient can be get less steep or reversed due to mixing of stars. One simple way to measure color gradient is to compare half-light radii in different bands. We have compared the optical and near infrared half-light radii of 273 early-type galaxies from Pahre (1999). Not surprisingly, we find that $r_e(V)s$ (half-light radii measured in V-band) are in general larger than $r_e(K)s$ (half-light radii measured in K-band). However, when divided into different environments, we find that elliptical galaxies in the denser environment have gentler color gradients than those in the less dense environment. Our finding suggests that elliptical galaxies in the dense environment have undergone many merging events and the mixing of stars through the merging have created the gentle color gradients.
The slope failure in the country is caused by mainly rainfall and its type is reported shallow slope failures in general. To investigate the cause of slope failure, the unsaturated soil slope behavior in accordance with rainfall amount studies actively, but there are little studies related the slope erosion and scour by rainfall. The slope erosion and scour by rainfall cause environmental pollution and slope instability, however there are few methods to effectively control them. This research analyzed experimentally how infinite gradients are infiltrated according to the changes of amount of rainfall and the slope of gradients by manufacturing the model of gradient in order to investigate how rainfall infiltrates regarding homogeneous gradients and slope protection method. For this, this experiment measured and analyzed discharge, storage rate occurring in gradients by going on changing amount of rainfall, slope of gradients.

To provide the basic informations related to forest road construction of mountainous terrain, we analyzed changes of the road structure factors such as banking and cutting slope gradients, slope length, road width by the environmental factors such as locations, slope gradients, soil types, road position on physically stabilized forest roads constructed in Gangwon-do. All factors related to the road structures by locations were significant except for banking slope length. Road width, longitudinal gradients, banking and cutting slope length by slope gradients were not significantly different and banking slope gradients in the range less than $30^{\circ}$, from $30^{\circ}$ to $35^{\circ}$ and more than $40^{\circ}$ and cutting slope gradients were significantly different for all areas. Road width, longitudinal gradients, banking slope length by soil types were not significantly different and others were significantly different. All factors related to the road structures by road position were significant except for cutting slope gradients.

Background: The plant communities within reservoir drawdown zones are ecologically important as they provide a range of ecosystem services such as stabilizing the shoreline, improving water quality, enhancing biodiversity, and mitigating climate change. The aim of the study was therefore to identify the major environmental factors affecting these plant communities within the drawdown zone of the Soyangho Reservoir in South Korea, which experiences a monsoonal climate, and thereafter to (1) elucidate the plant species responses and (2) compare the soil seedbank composition along main environmental gradients. Results: Two main environmental gradients affecting the plant community structure were identified within the drawdown zone; these were a vertical and longitudinal gradient. On the vertical dimension, a hydrological gradient of flood/exposure, the annual-dominated plant community near the water edge changed to a perennial-dominated community at the highest elevation. On the longitudinal dimension from the dam to the upstream, plant species composition changed from an upland forest-edge community to a lowland riverine community, and this was correlated with slope degree, soil particle size, and soil moisture content. Simultaneously, the composition of the soil seedbank was separated along the vertical gradient of the drawdown zone, with mainly annuals near the water edge and some perennials at higher elevations. The species composition similarity between the seedbank and extant vegetation was greater in the annual communities at low elevation than in the perennial communities at higher elevation. Conclusions: The structures of plant community and soil seedbank in the drawdown zone of a monsoonal riverine reservoir were changed first along the vertical and secondly along the longitudinal gradients. The soil seedbank could play an important role on the vegetation regeneration after the disturbances of flood/exposure in the drawdown zone. These results indicate that it is important to understand the vertical and longitudinal environmental gradients affecting shoreline plant community structure and the role of soil seedbanks on the rapid vegetation regeneration for conserving and restoring the drawdown zone of a monsoonal reservoir.
Vegetational changes along elevational and topographical gradients were studied in Mt. Jumbong which is located at the core area of the Mt. Sorak Biosphere Reserve in Kangwon-do Province in central Korea. Two 500 m north-south transects crossing two valleys and a small ridge were laid out, and fifty-one 10 m$\times$10 m permanent quadrats were systematically set up. All trees bigger than 2.5 cm DBH were marked with numbered aluminum tags, and their DBH measured and the species identified. Coverage of plant species in the herb layer were determined in two 2 m $\times$ 2 m subquadrats in each of the permanent quadrats. Thirty-two species of woody plants occurred in the tree layer in the permanent quadrats studied. Quercus mongolica was the dominant species across the study site, and Acer pseudosieboldianum and Carpinus cordata were also important. Quercus mongolica occurred on the ridges and south-facing slopes, and Acer pseudosieboldianum occurred extensively except for valleys. In contrast, Fraxinus mandshurica, Acer mono, Acer triflorum, and Ulmus laciniata were common in valleys. At the herbaceous layer, 112 species were identified. Dominant species were Ainsliaea acerifolia and Sasa borealis on the ridges, Meehania urticifolia on north-facing slopes, and Deutzia glabrata on valleys. Soil environmental factors were compared among the quadrats. pH was lower in the quadrats located on ridges and south-facing slopes, and organic matter was lowest on south-facing slopes. Quadrats located on valleys were generally higher in pH, organic matter, N, P, K, Ca and Mg. DCA ordinations for tree layer and herb layer were carried out in order to identify the dominant environmental factors affecting the distribution of plant species along the environmental gradients. Correlation analysis between ordination axis scores and environmental factors showed that axis one was negatively correlated with elevation and positively correlated with soil organic matter, pH, Ca, Mg, and P, but that axis two was positively correlated with elevation. These results indicate that vegetation responds very sensitively to elevational and topographical gradients although the study area is relatively small with about 100 m in elevational variation.
Allocation patterns of energy and mineral elements were investigated with phaseolus multiflorus grown in the environmental gradients. The result showed different energy allocation patterns according to relative light intensities and nutrients. The optimal switching time of energy allocation from vegetative to resproductive growth was delated as decreasing relative light intensity. The switch of the shift to reproduction was timed earlier in phosphorus treatment and delayed in nitrogen treatment. Analyzing the mineral elements to various organs, patterns of energy allocation were different from those of mineral allocation. There was no significant difference for allocation patterns in relative light intensity gradients. it was shown that n and p were distributed over the reproductive organs, k mainly in stems, ca in leaves and na in roots. mg was evenly distributed in each organs.
An ion selective microelectrode (ISME) was fabricated to measure concentrations of ammonium (${NH_4}^+$-N) and nitrate (${NO_3}^-$-N) according to the depth of nitrifying biofilm. The limits of detectability and validity of results were investigated to evaluate the ISME. The electromotive force (EMF) was directly proportional to the ion concentration, and average detection limits of ${NH_4}^+$ and ${NO_3}^-$ ISME were $10^{-5.14}$ and $10^{-5.18}$ M, respectively. The concentrations of ${NH_4}^+ $-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N in various depths on the nitrifying biofilm were measured by the ISME. When a modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process was operated at an HRT of 6 h, concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N in the bulk solution and biofilm at depths of $100\;{\mu}m$ decreased by $70\;{\mu}M$, while ${NO_3}^-$-N increased by $101\;{\mu}M$ and remained constant thereafter. At an HRT of 4 h, concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N at depths of $500\;{\mu}m$ decreased by $160\;{\mu}M$ and ${NO_3}^-$-N increased by $162;{\mu}M$ and remained constant thereafter. As HRT decreased, the concentration gradients of ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N between bulk solution and biofilm was higher due to the increase of nitrogen load. Also, the concentration gradients of the ${NH_4}^+$-N and ${NO_3}^-$-N of biofilm in the second aerobic tank were lower than those of the first aerobic tank, suggesting differences of nitrogen load and concentrations of DO between the first and second aerobic tank.
Environmental thermal loads such as vertical and lateral temperature gradients are significant factors that must be taken into account when designing the bridge. Different models have been developed and used by countries for simulating thermal gradients in bridge codes. In most of the codes only vertical temperature gradients are considered, such as Iranian Standard Loads for Bridge code (ISLB), which only considers the vertical gradient for bridge design proposes. On the other hand, the vertical gradient profile specified in ISLB, has many lacks due to the diversity of climate in Iran, and only one vertical gradient profile is defined for whole Iran. This paper aims to get the both vertical and lateral gradient loads for the concrete box girder using experimental analysis in the capital of Iran, Tehran. To fulfill this aim, thermocouples are installed in experimental concrete segment and temperatures in different location of the segment are recorded. A three dimensional finite element model of concrete box-girder bridge is constructed to study the effects of thermal loads. Results of investigation proved that the effects of thermal loads are not negligible, and must be considered in design processes. Moreover, a solution for reducing the negative effects of thermal gradients in bridges is proposed. Results of the simulation show that using one layer polyurethane insulation can significantly reduce the thermal gradients and thermal stresses.
Plant functional traits have been shown to be useful to understand how and why ecosystems and their components vary across environmental heterogeneity or gradients. This study investigated how plant functional (leaf) traits vary according to an elevation-associated environmental gradient. Environmental gradients (mean annual temperature and precipitation) were quantified, and leaf traits (leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf nitrogen, leaf phosphorus, leaf carbon, and leaf C/N ratio) of the understory woody plant species Acer pseudosieboldianum were examined across an elevational gradient ranging from 600 to 1200 m in a Baegunsan Mountain in Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. The results showed that mean annual temperature and precipitation decreased and increased along with elevation, respectively. Leaf area of the plant species decreased slightly with increasing elevation, while specific leaf area did not differ significantly. Leaf nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon concentrations) were higher at high elevations, but leaf C/N ratio decreased with elevation.
The environmental gradient analyses were applied for the distribution patterns of species populations in mt. moak provincial park in korea. The species populations were sequentially ordered along the environmental gradients such as soil moisture, soil ph, soil organic matter content and elevation and were grouped into seven ecological groups by the two-dimensional analyses of temperature-moisture gradient : zelkova serrata group on mesic-lower parts near the streames and well drained stony slopes, carpinus tschonoskii group on mesic-middle parts, quercus acutissima group on lower parts destroyed by human activities, quercus variabilis group on xeric-middle parts, quercus serrata group on xeric-upper middle parts, quercus mongolica group on xeric-upper parts and pinus densiflora group on xeric-rock ridge lines, hillocks and lower parts interfered by human. Four forest vegetation types, zelkova forest dominated by the c. tschonoskii group on mesic-middle parts, oak forest dominated by the groups of q. acutissima, q. variabilis, q. serrata and q. mongolica on xeric sites and pine forest dominated by the p. densiflora group on dry and poor sites, were separated in mosaic chart by the two-dimensional analysis.
