  • Objective: This study measured and evaluated the characteristics of the whole body vibration experienced in some coal-fired power plant in Korea. Background: Few studies have been carried out in Korea about the effects of whole body vibration of power plants on humans. Method: The evaluation scheme suggested by the Law of Noise and Vibration Control was applied. Results: It was found that 28.9% of total measurement points were above the limit suggested by the law. Conclusion: Many workers are exposed to whole body vibration during their job completion, and more efforts should be applied to prevention and control of the plat vibration.

  • This paper proposes the method of experimental structural dynamic modification of fixture for environmental vibration test control. This method can predict the responses at any points on the fixture utilizing the experimental data, and structural dynamic modification of fixture is made using the predicted responses for the spectra at the specimen attachment points to meet the specified reference spectrum. From the results of controlling the fixture before and after modification by conventional control method and optimal reference spectrum, which has been previously reported by the authors, the proposed method is shown to be an effective one.

  • It is increasingly important to ensure that a given vibration test specification of a particular machinery component is appropriately established by considering its real environmental conditions. Vibration test standards for electrical components are well documented, for example in an IEC 60068 series, while standards for machinery components are rarely found except a few military standards. Thus many vibration tests are performed based on the military standards. However, a test based on these military standards often results in over-testing, and under-testing in some cases due to the different environmental conditions. Also, these standards require an appropriate tailoring that may not be easily accomplished. In this paper, various international and military standards are compared and investigated to obtain test specifications relevant for machinery components. Also appropriate tailoring methods are demonstrated through a case study.

  • With the recent increase in development projects centered on urban areas, the construction of building structures is increasing in areas adjacent to the urban railway operation section. In this case, since ground vibration is generated by the train in operation and affects the adjacent structure, the building structure needs appropriate vibration reduction against train vibration generated at the adjacent location from the desing phase. However, the vibration levels calculated vary depending on the train vibration evaluation method, which means that the implementation of vibration reduction may vary depending on the train vibration evaluation method. Therefore, this study calculated the vibration level according to ground conditions, tunnel depth and separation distance between vibration sources and adjacent structures using numerical analysis and train vibration evaluation methods, and compared them to designning phase. And the appropriate separation distance between the tunnel and the adjacent structure was evaluated by comparing the vibration level with the allowable standards. As a result of the study, the Ungar and Bender evaluation method is evaluated as the most appropriate among the train vibration evaluation methods, and the appropriate separation distance between the tunnel and the adjacent structure is evaluated to be more than 4.5D.

  • The ground vibration has effect on the human body and the nearby structure. However, it was very difficult to estimate the damage of structure caused by the vibration. Especially, ground vibration must be estimated on the bottom of structure because it was made up of several mediums. In this study, it was considered about the shock vibration on medium characteristics as calculating the peak particle velocity and analysing the vibration waveform. The results are as follows : Firstly, the correlation coefficient of PPV(Peak Particle Velocity) and SD(Scaled Distance) was very high at the vertical component, which was represented to 0.991 in general ground medium and each 0.989, 0.961, 0.925 in concrete medium. And also, the vibration waveform at the vertical component was very good in all mediums. Secondly, the vibration waveform at the longitudinal component was represented to a great amplitude and phase difference in all mediums. It was considered that the vibration waveform occurred the damping when particle velocity by shock vibration was propagated through other medium. Thirdly, the vibration waveform in concrete medium was represented to variation of amplitude in the order of RC medium, NC=H medium, NC=S medium at the vertical component. It was considered that the particle velocity propagated fast when a medium have a big strength and density.

  • In the case of a precision equipment, it requires a vibration free environment to provide its proper function. Especially, lithography and inspection devices, which have sub-nanometer class high accuracy and resolution, have come to necessity for producing more improved giga class semiconductor wafers. This high technology equipments require very strict environmental vibration standard in promotion to the accuracy of the manufacturing, inspecting devices. The vibration criteria are usually obtained either by the real vibration exciting test on the equipment or by the analytical calculation. The former is accurate but requires a great deal of time and efforts while the latter lacks reliability. This paper proposes a new method to solve this problem at a time. The permissible vibration level to a precision equipment can be easily obtained by analyzing the process of Frequency Response Function(FRF). This paper also demonstrates its effectiveness by applying the proposed method to finding the permissible vibration criteria of a Computer Hard Disk Drive.

  • This paper describes the results of a series of field experiments which are carried out to assess the reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires. The ground vibration due to train service is measured in Honam Railroad line and Kyongbu Railroad line to assess the ground vibration with the domestic railroad line and train type before field model test. From the results of these tests, frequency on train service is presented from 5Hz to 100Hz and a range of excellence frequency is presented to be about from 20Hz to 40Hz in the domestic railroad line. Also, plate bearing tests are conducted to evaluate the variation of bearing capacity with different thickness of the waste tire layer and the fill layer. Finally, field model test is performed by using tire chips ($5cm{\times}5cm$ in size) as a reduction material of railroad vibration. The reduction effect of railroad vibration by utilizing waste tires increases with increasing the thickness of the waste tire layer and the frequency of the vibration source. The results of this experimental study was shown that the waste tire can be used for reduction of the railroad vibration.

  • Since slender structures such as utility poles, radio masts, and chimneys, are essentially statically determinate structures, they often collapse during earthquakes. Although vibration control is the most logical method for improving the earthquake resistance of such structures, there are many practical problems with its implementation due to their very long natural vibration period. This paper proposes a new vibration control device to effectively prevent the collapse of slender structures subjected to strong earthquakes. The device consists of a pendulum, an elastic restraint and a lever, and is designed such that when it is attached to a slender structure, the second vibration mode of the structure corresponds to the first vibration mode of the same structure without the device attached. This is highly effective in causing the transverse motions of the device and the structure to oppose each other and so reduce the overall transverse vibration during an earthquake. In the present paper, the effectiveness of the vibration control device is first evaluated based on laboratory experiments and numerical studies. An example of applying the device to a tall chimney is then simulated. A new dynamic analytical method for slender structures with abrupt rigidity variations is then proposed.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the working conditions In construction workers through measurements of working environments and to improve the working conditions and to design the appropriate environmental and health management system. The results of measurement for working environments in construction work are as following: 1. The excess rate of noise and dust concentration in express highway construction, road construction, building construction and interior painting was 28.6% and 24.5% respectively. 2. The excess rate of mixed organic solvents concentration in interior painting was 39.3%. 3. The chain type bulldozer has the highest level of vibration; the excess rate was 85.7%, and among the vibration instruments, the level of left hand's vibration of all vibrators exceeded the criterion and in the case of drilling all the level of vibration exceeded the criterion in both hands. On the basis of the results in this research the environmental and health management system for construction workers must be considered. Therefore, it is necessary to be introduced the special medical examination and measurement of working environments in construction industry. In defining "the working place" of Article 39 of Enforcement regulations of industrial safety and health act, the word "indoors" should be deleted. Then the eligible industry for measurement of working environment must be extended. And it is also necessary for construction industry to be performed group health management service by agencies such as other manufacturing industry.
