Use of Recycled Brick Masonry Aggregate (RBMA) and Recycled Brick Masonry Aggregate Concrete (RBMAC) in Sustainable Construction

  • Use of recycled aggregates in portland cement concrete construction can offer benefits associated with both economy and sustainability. Testing performed to date indicates that RBMA can be used as a 100% replacement for conventional coarse aggregate in concrete that exhibits acceptable mechanical properties for use in structural and pavement elements, including satisfactory performance in some durability tests. RBMAC is currently not used in any type of construction in the United States. However, use of RBMAC could become a viable construction strategy as sustainable building practices become the norm. Rating systems such as LEED offer points for reuse of building materials (particularly on-site) and use of recycled materials. If renovations at an existing facility call for the demolition of existing brick masonry constructions, the rubble could be included as RBMA in new concrete pavement, sidewalks, or curb and gutter. Other potential uses for RBMAC could include those in the precast concrete industry, particularly in architectural precast concrete applications. In addition to providing acceptable strength and economy, the color of RBMA could be an attractive component of architectural precast concrete panels or other façade components. This paper explores the feasibility of use of RBMAC in several types of sustainable construction initiatives, based upon the findings of previous work with RBMAC produced from construction and demolition waste from a case study site. Guidance for obtaining and using RBMA is presented, along with a summary of material properties of RBMAC that will be useful to construction professionals.

Current Studies on Bakanae Disease in Rice: Host Range, Molecular Identification, and Disease Management

  • The seed borne disease such as bakanae is difficult to control. Crop yield loss caused by bakanae depending on the regions and varieties grown, ranging from 3.0% to 95.4%. Bakanae is an important disease of rice worldwide and the pathogen was identified as Fusarium fujikuroi Nirenberg (teleomorph: Gibberella fujikuroi Sawada). Currently, four Fusaria (F. fujikuroi, F. proliferatum, F. verticillioides and F. andiyazi) belonging to F. fujikuroi species complex are generally known as the pathogens of bakanae. The infection occurs through both seed and soil-borne transmission. When infection occurs during the heading stage, rice seeds become contaminated. Molecular detection of pathogens of bakanae is important because identification based on morphological and biological characters could lead to incorrect species designation and time-consuming. Seed disinfection has been studied for a long time in Korea for the management of the bakanae disease of rice. As seed disinfectants have been studied to control bakanae, resistance studies to chemicals have been also conducted. Presently biological control and resistant varieties are not widely used. The detection of this pathogen is critical for seed certification and for preventing field infections. In South Korea, bakanae is designated as a regulated pathogen. To provide highly qualified rice seeds to farms, Korea Seed & Variety Service (KSVS) has been producing and distributing certified rice seeds for producing healthy rice in fields. Therefore, the objective of the study is to summarize the recent progress in molecular identification, fungicide resistance, and the management strategy of bakanae.

Ethnobotanical importance of the endemic taxa in the Egyptian flora

  • Background: Endemic species are important components in the flora of most world regions. Most of these species have become threatened and exposed to extinction within the last few years. The present study aims to evaluate the ecosystem services offered by the endemic plant taxa in Egypt and the threats that affect them. Twenty-five field visits were conducted during summer 2018 to spring 2022 to several locations all over Egypt. In each location, the main habitats, national distribution, abundance, goods and threats were recorded. Results: Egypt has 41 endemic taxa belonging to 36 genera and 20 families inhabiting 10 main habitats. Rocky surfaces and sandy formations have the highest number of endemic species. The relation between the number of endemic taxa and the abundance categories indicated that 2 taxa are rare (4.9% of the total taxa), while the remaining were very rare (95%). The most represented offered good was the medicinal uses (32 taxa = 78%), while fuel plants were only represented by 2 taxa (2 taxa = 4.9%). Besides, 14 taxa (34.1% of the total studied taxa) have at least 1 environmental service. Soil fertility (7 taxa = 50%) was the most represented, followed by sand accumulations (6 taxa out of 14 taxa = 43%), while shading plant was the least (1 taxon = 7.1%) (Rosa arabica). The most represented threat is over-cutting and over-collecting (38 taxa = 92.7%), while mining and quarrying is the least represented (4 taxa = 9.8%). Conclusions: The potential and actual goods, services and threats of the endemic taxa were assessed as follows; field observation, information collected from local inhabitants and herbalists, and a literature review. The present study recommended planning a strategy about the importance, threats and conservation of endemic taxa in Egypt that would help in the protection and rescue of these plants and increase awareness about the importance of these plants.

건축물 해체공사 전문인력을 위한 기본역량 분석 - 국내·외 사례를 중심으로 (Analysis of Basic Capabilities for Building Demolition Experts - Focused on Domestic and International Cases)

  • 최근 건축물 해체공사 중 많은 사고가 발생함에 따라 건축물 해체에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 이 연구에서는 국내와 국외의 사례를 통해 건축물 해체공사 전문인력에게 요구되는 기본역량을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 국내의 건축물 해체공사감리교육과 국가직무능력표준(NCS)의 구조물해체 직무의 능력단위에서 요구하는 능력을 조사하였고, 일본, 미국, 영국의 해체 공사 전문인력 자격시험 과목 및 관련 교육내용을 조사하였다. 연구결과, 해체공사 전문인력을 위한 요구역량을 법규, 구조, 안전, 계획, 운영, 시공, 환경의 7가지 분야로 분류하고, 기능직, 기술직, 관리직의 단계별로 분류할 필요성을 제안하였다.

기업로고와 ESG 평가의 관계에 대한 고찰 (An Investigation of the Relationship Between Corporate Logo and ESG Evaluation)

  • 기업로고는 기업을 대표하는 시각적 기호로서 기업의 가치, 목표, 비전을 상징적으로 나타낸다. 디자인과 색상에 따라 각각 다른 메시지를 전달하며 기업의 의사소통 도구 역할을 한다. 최근 ESG 경영에 대한 요구가 높아짐에 따라 기업은 로고를 통해 환경 보호, 기업의 투명성 등의 가치를 함축적으로 나타내기 시작했다. 기업은 추구하는 가치를 시각적으로 강조하며 원하는 이미지를 투영하는 전략적 신호로서 로고를 사용한다. 이러한 과정에서 로고를 보는 이해관계자는 인지 편향의 문제를 겪는다. 따라서, 본 연구는 기업로고의 디자인에 따라 간접적으로 ESG 실천 가치를 전달할 수 있으며, 이는 곧 기업의 ESG 평가에도 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 알아보고자 한다. 추가적으로, 기업이 ESG 관련 이슈를 기업공시 자료에 적극적으로 포함할수록 편향의 효과가 커질 것으로 예상하는 조절효과를 함께 살펴본다. 본 연구는 KOSPI 상장 기업 중 617개 대상으로 2020년부터 2022년까지의 ESG 평가자료를 활용하여 분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 로고와 ESG공시가 ESG평가에 미치는 유의한 영향을 확인하였지만, ESG공시의 조절효과는 부분적으로 유의하였다.

  • Recently, mandatory BIM design has been enforced in the civil engineering field, focusing on public projects, and inducement measures to actively participate in BIM by participating subjects are required. The BIM ordering documents must reflect the characteristics of the BIM project, current construction standards and laws, and environmental conditions of domestic participants. In this study, we analyze the ordering documents used in domestic and overseas civil engineering BIM projects to determine whether they meet the purpose of BIM. In the future, items that consider the existing heterogeneous data linkage and compatibility, the connectivity with the current construction guidelines and laws, the cost of the designer and the input personnel are prepared for the part that does not meet the BIM purpose. Furthermore, the written order documents are verified through interviews with experts who have experience in BIM projects. Through the results of this study, I would like to propose a consultation system strategy to prepare and present items according to the purpose and type of project by client.

난배양성(viable but non-culturable; VBNC) Edwardsiella piscicida의 특성 연구 (Characterization of viable but non-culturable (VBNC) Edwardsiella piscicida)

  • A viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state is a survival strategy adopted by bacteria when faced with unfavorable environmental conditions, rendering them unable to grow on nutrient agar while maintaining low metabolic activity. This study explored the impact of temperature and nutrient availability on inducing VBNC state in Edwardsiella piscicida, the most important bacterial fish pathogen, and assessed its pathogenicity at VBNC state. E. piscicida was suspended in filtered sterile seawater and exposed to three different temperatures (4, 10, and 25℃) to induce the VBNC state. Subsequently, the induced VBNC cells were subjected to resuscitation by either raising the temperature to 28℃ or inoculating them in brain heart infusion broth supplemented with 1% NaCl. A propidium monoazide (PMA)-qPCR method was also developed to selectively quantify live (VBNC or culturable) E. piscicida cells. The results showed that the bacteria entered the VBNC state after approximately 1 month at 4℃ and 25℃, and 2 months at 10℃. The VBNC E. piscicida cells were successfully revived within 3 days in a nutrient-rich environment at 28℃, highlighting the significance of temperature and nutrition in inducing and resuscitating the VBNC state. In pathogenicity tests, resuscitated E. piscicida cells exhibited high pathogenicity in olive flounder comparable to cultured bacteria, while VBNC cells showed no signs of infection, suggesting they are unlikely to resuscitate in fish. In conclusion, this study contributes to our understanding of fish pathogen ecology by investigating the characteristics of the VBNC state under varying temperature and nutrition conditions.

시스템 다이내믹스 기법을 활용한 온라인 쇼핑몰의 전략에 관한 연구 : 소비자의 구매 및 재구매 행동을 중심으로 (A Study for Strategy of On-line Shopping Mall: Based on Customer Purchasing and Re-purchasing Pattern)

  • Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or eCommerce, has become a major business trend in these days. The amount of trade conducted electronically has grown extraordinarily by developing the Internet technology. Most electronic commerce has being conducted between businesses to customers; therefore, the researches with respect to e-commerce are to find customer's needs, behaviors through statistical methods. However, the statistical researches, mostly based on a questionnaire, are the static researches, They can tell us the dynamic relationships between initial purchasing and repurchasing. Therefore, this study proposes dynamic research model for analyzing the cause of initial purchasing and repurchasing. This paper is based on the System-Dynamic theory, using the powerful simulation model with some restriction, The restrictions are based on the theory TAM(Technology Acceptance Model), PAM, and TPB(Theory of Planned Behavior). This article investigates not only the customer's purchasing and repurchasing behavior by passing of time but also the interactive effects to one another. This research model has six scenarios and three steps for analyzing customer behaviors. The first step is the research of purchasing situations. The second step is the research of repurchasing situations. Finally, the third step is to study the relationship between initial purchasing and repurchasing. The purpose of six scenarios is to find the customer's purchasing patterns according to the environmental changes. We set six variables in these scenarios by (1) changing the number of products; (2) changing the number of contents in on-line shopping malls; (3) having multimedia files or not in the shopping mall web sites; (4) grading on-line communities; (5) changing the qualities of products; (6) changing the customer's degree of confidence on products. First three variables are applied to study customer's purchasing behavior, and the other variables are applied to repurchasing behavior study. Through the simulation study, this paper presents some inter-relational result about customer purchasing behaviors, For example, Active community actions are not the increasing factor of purchasing but the increasing factor of word of mouth effect, Additionally. The higher products' quality, the more word of mouth effects increase. The number of products and contents on the web sites have same influence on people's buying behaviors. All simulation methods in this paper is not only display the result of each scenario but also find how to affect each other. Hence, electronic commerce firm can make more realistic marketing strategy about consumer behavior through this dynamic simulation research. Moreover, dynamic analysis method can predict the results which help the decision of marketing strategy by using the time-line graph. Consequently, this dynamic simulation analysis could be a useful research model to make firm's competitive advantage. However, this simulation model needs more further study. With respect to reality, this simulation model has some limitations. There are some missing factors which affect customer's buying behaviors in this model. The first missing factor is the customer's degree of recognition of brands. The second factor is the degree of customer satisfaction. The third factor is the power of word of mouth in the specific region. Generally, word of mouth affects significantly on a region's culture, even people's buying behaviors. The last missing factor is the user interface environment in the internet or other on-line shopping tools. In order to get more realistic result, these factors might be essential matters to make better research in the future studies.

영국과 미국에서 침입성 뉴트리아 (Myocastor coypus)의 효과적 관리 (Effective Management of Invasive Nutria (Myocastor coypus) in the UK and the USA)

  • 생물다양성을 감소시키고 인간에게 경제적 손실을 불러오는 침입외래생물은 사전에 자연으로의 유입 차단이 최선이지만, 유입과 억제에 실패한 경우 적극적으로 구제하거나 퇴치해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 영국과 미국에서 실시된 뉴트리아 박멸 사례를 소개하고, 국내 뉴트리아 관리체계 개선에 기여할 수 있는 정보를 제공하고자 하였다. 영국의 박멸캠페인은 관리의 목적과 목표에 대한 완전한 이해를 바탕으로 장기적인 계획을 수립하였고 적합한 지원을 확보하였다. 뉴트리아에 대한 충분한 정보를 축적하고 관리 여건의 변화에 따라 관리전략을 수정하였으며, 현장에 반영하였다. 미국의 체사피크만 박멸 프로젝트는 장기간의 생태정보를 바탕으로 영국에 비해 발전된 포획 기술을 적용하였으며, 영국 박멸캠페인 성과를 분석하여 박멸계획과 전략, 실행방안을 도출하였다. 국내 서식하는 뉴트리아를 효과적으로 관리하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 사항을 제안할 수 있다. 첫째, 퇴치 필요성에 대하여 이해당사자간 공감으로 협의체를 구성하고 주기적으로 생태적 정보와 의견을 교환한다. 둘째, 현장의 의견을 적극 수렴하여 퇴치전략과 관리정책에 반영한다. 관리지표를 기반으로 퇴치계획을 수립하고, 성과를 평가하고, 성과에 따라 조정하는 모든 과정은 유기적으로 연계되도록 한다. 셋째, 과학적인 관리방법을 도입하고 관리성과는 객관적으로 평가하며, 실천계획은 서식실태 모니터링을 통해 가변적으로 조정한다. 넷째, 장기적인 예산과 안정적인 조직을 확보하고 퇴치 효율성이 높은 시기에 재원을 집중하여 투입한다. 이러한 시사점은 국내 뉴트리아 관리방식을 효율적으로 개선하고 체계적이고 장기적인 관리를 지속하는데 도움이 될 수 있다.

광릉숲 천연활엽수림의 수종별 낙엽 현상과 질소 재전류 특성 (The Quantity and Pattern of Leaf Fall and Nitrogen Resorption Strategy by Leaf-litter in the Gwangneung Natural Broadleaved Forest)

  • 본 연구에서는 낙엽 현상을 정량화하는 모델을 적용하여 광릉숲 천연활엽수림에서 수종에 따른 낙엽의 시기와 속도를 추정하고, 이에 따른 상층 수종의 양분이용특성을 검토하였다. 낙엽은 2015년과 2016년의 가을에 36개의 낙엽수거망을 이용해 주기적으로 수집하였으며, 5개 수종으로 분류하여 측정한 건중량을 딕슨의 모델에 적용했다. 또한 수집시기마다 낙엽의 질소농도를 분석하여 재전류율을 산출하였다. 광릉숲의 낙엽은 10월 초에 시작하여 11월 중순까지 떨어졌는데, 수종에 따라 두 해에 다른 경향을 보였다. 평균적으로 낙엽이 절정인 시기는 상층의 서어나무가 먼저, 졸참나무가 가장 늦게 나타났고, 낙엽의 속도는 팥배나무가 최소 18.6일 동안 빠르게, 까치박달이 최대 40.8일 동안 천천히 나타났다. 한편 낙엽이 절정일 때 상층 수종의 질소 재전류율은 졸참나무 평균 0.45%, 서어나무 평균 0.48%로 나타났으며, 졸참나무의 재전류율은 강수량이 적었던 2015년에 높게 나타났다. 잎은 달려있던 기간의 기온, 강수량, 광주기, $CO_2$ 등의 환경변화에 영향을 받아 탈락되므로 낙엽 현상과 재전류율은 수종에 따라 연간 다른 경향의 차이를 보였다. 향후 낙엽수들의 계절현상을 정량화하고 여러 조건에 따라 비교 분석 한다면 기후변화에 의한 낙엽 시기와 속도의 조절이 수목의 생육 기간을 연장 혹은 단축할 지를 예측하고, 이것이 양분이용특성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 구명할 수 있을 것이다.
