Beta radiation is measured for an environmental monitoring purpose or for an internal radiation exposure monitoring of nuclear power plant's worker. In korea, strontium 89 and strontium 90 is measured for an environmental monitoring purpose. Also tritium and carbon 14 contained in urine is measured for an internal radiation exposure monitoring of nuclear power plant's worker. Because above isotopes emits low energy beta radiations having a wide range of energy, very complicated isotope separation preprocess is needed. In this study, two mixed beta emitting isotopes are measured simultaneously using a liquid scintillation counter(LSC) and analyzed by using a developed statistical method. Banded least square method is used to analyze the mixed spectrum, and the goodness-of-fitness test is proposed. Test results show that the developed procedure can be very useful for analyzing a mixed beta emitting isotopes.
The effects of LET (linear energy transfer) of radiation on the induction of somatic chromosome mutations or gene mutations of Drosophila melanogaster were studied. For detecting somatic chromosome mutations and gene mutations, Drosophila wing spot system and eye-color spot system were used, respectively. The frequencies of somatic chromosome mutations or gene mutations induced after third instar larval treatment with 23 MeV neutrons, thermal neutrons, X-rays were examined. From these data, the RBE(relative biological effectiveness) values of 23 MeV neutrons relative to X-rays for induction of somatic chromosome mutations or gene mutations were calculated. The present results suggest that high LET radiations are efficient than X-ray in producing not only somatic chromosome mutations but also gene mutations.
Interpretation of relevance between long-wave radiation and meteorological elements is recognized as an essential element for understanding the underlying mechanism of urban thermal environment formation. In this study, we analyzed relation between three elements : long-wave radiation, temperature, and lower-middle class cloudiness. The correlation was analyzed through field observations. The results are as follows. (1) Temperatures and long-wave radiation increased from January to March. This phenomenon has been confirmed in urban and suburban areas. (2) Long-wave radiations showed a tendency to increase clearly with increasing cloudiness.
During the past few decades, significant increase in the consumption of coffee has led to rapid increase in the production of coffee waste in South Korea. Spent coffee waste is often treated as a general waste and is directly disposed without the necessary treatment. Spent Coffee Grounds (SCGs) can release several organic contaminants, including caffeine. In this study, leaching tests were conducted for SCGs and oxidative degradation of caffeine were also conducted. The tested SCGs contained approximately 4.4 mg caffeine per gram of coffee waste. Results from the leaching tests show that approximately 90% of the caffeine can be extracted at each step during sequential extraction. Advanced oxidation methods for the degradation of caffeine, such as $UV/H_2O_2$, photo-Fenton reaction, and $UV/O_3$, were tested. UV radiation has a limited effect on the degradation of caffeine. In particular, UV-A and UV-B radiations present in sunlight cause marginal degradation, thereby indicating that natural degradation of caffeine is minimal. However, $O_3$ can cause rapid degradation of caffeine, and the values of pseudo-first order rate constants were found to be ranging from $0.817min^{-1}$ to $1.506min^{-1}$ when the ozone generation rate was $37.1g/m^3$. Additionally, the degradation rate of caffeine is dependent on the wavelength of irradiation.
Structural characteristics for standard models of single-span plastic greenhouse in Korea and high tunnels in North America were analyzed, and comparative analysis for greenhouse environments measuring in Korean farmhouse and Rutgers high tunnel was carried out to find structural and environmental improvements of single-span plastic greenhouses that occupy most of Korean greenhouse. Widths of high tunnels are similar to single-span plastic greenhouses but their heights are high comparatively and their side heights are fairly higher than single-span plastic greenhouses specially. Rafters, which are main frames, section sizes of high tunnels are bigger and their intervals are wider than single-span plastic greenhouses. Relative bending resistances compared with representative Korean greenhouse were analyzed by 0.92 to 1.42 in single-span plastic greenhouses, and 1.38 to 2.96 in high tunnels. Frame ratios of single-span plastic greenhouses were 6.8 to 8.6%, and those of high tunnels were 5.5 to 8.7%. We analyzed air temperatures and solar radiations measured in single-span plastic greenhouse and high tunnel on clear days in late March. There were outside temperatures in generally similar range, and judging by rise of indoor temperatures, ventilation performance of high tunnel is more excellent than single-span plastic greenhouse. Solar radiations of two areas were no big difference but light transmittance of high tunnel was a little bit higher than single-span plastic greenhouse. Single-span plastic greenhouses are disadvantageous in environmental managements such as ventilation performance and light transmittance because distance between greenhouses is too narrow and length of greenhouse is too long compared to high tunnels. To get the environmental improvement effects as well as to increase the structural resistance of single-span plastic greenhouses are achievable by widening the width of greenhouse in possible range, widening the space between rafters, and enlarging the section size of rafters. Also, we need to secure enough distance between greenhouses and to restrict the length of greenhouse by maximum 50 m in order to improve the ventilation performance and the light transmittance.
The unsustainable human activities like increased use of automobiles, heavy industrialization and the use of large volumes of fertilizers, chemicals and pesticides in the agricultural land cause climate change problems in one way or another. Under normal circumstances, the heat radiations from the sun will be reflected back. An excessive volume of GHGs in the atmosphere would prevent these radiations from reflecting back. East Asia is facing severe climate change issues in recent times. A lot of climate change problems such as hurricanes and floods have been reported from this region in the last couple of decades. The study aimed at investigating the climate change in East Asia with changing Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The study adopted a quantitative research method with a case study research design where a deliberate focus was made on the East Asia Region. Secondary data was gathered and analyzed to yield both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study concluded that the impact of East Asia Climate variability was significant mainly for some extreme events. Also, the study concluded that there was a significant link between the change of the East Asia climate variability and that of the sea surface temperature. Further, the study concluded that a linear relationship existed between the sea surface temperature and the climate of East Asia. Hence, a linear regression was a significant predictor of the East Asia Climate (EAC) based on changing sea surface temperature. The model revealed that 37.4% of the variations in the climate change index were explained by the changes in the sea surface temperature. The climate was expected to change with a value of 49.48 for a unit change in the sea surface temperature.
In this study, we analyzed the relationship between four elements: long-wave radiation, the direction of the building, BVR (Building View Ratio), and cloud amount. We examined how long-wave radiations surrounding a building influences the perception of heat in the summer. The results are as follows. (1) Long-wave radiation and BVR are highly correlated regardless of geographical direction. (2) Especially, during dawn in a clear day, areas with high BVR observed high levels of long-wave radiation. (3) This correlation suggests that higher BVR in urban areas will result in a greater number of tropical nights.
This article delves into the current status of various packaging technologies, which are currently being applied or are under development for the shelf-life extension and quality improvement of fresh and processed meat products. Traditional packaging methods include vacuum packaging, modified atmosphere packaging, and air-permeable packaging. Recently, innovative packaging methods have been introduced that utilize technologies such as barrier-films, active packaging, nanotechnology, microperforated films, far-infrared radiations, and plasma treatment. All of these packaging methods have their own merits and drawbacks in terms of shelf-life and quality maintenance. A right choice of packaging system for fresh and processed meat products must be made in accordance with the conditions of the raw material, storage, and distribution in the market and household, and while considering the environmental sustainability and consumer's expectations.
In this study, long and short-wave radiations were observed in urban and suburban areas during the summer season, and frequency analysis was performed for each radiation intensity by a new analysis method. The following results were obtained. (1) Long-wave radiation values were found to be larger in the afternoon than in the morning, in both urban and suburban areas, unlike short-wave radiation values. (2) Short-wave radiation showed a right-skewed frequency distribution. In the high energy area greater than $900W/m^2$, the frequency was significantly higher in the suburbs than in the urban areas. (3) Long-wave radiation was in the range of $290{\sim}479W/m^2$, its frequency distribution resembled a normal distribution, and the frequency of 410, $420W/m^2$ was the highest.

This study was carried out to investigate algal community structures and their correlations with environmental factors on five weir areas in the Nakdong River, South Korea. Water qualities, hydrodynamics, meteorological conditions and algal species compositions were observed in studied sites from May 2010 to Dec. 2013. Results showed that average total phosphorus concentration of 2013 was decreased by 52.4% in comparing with that from 2010 to 2011. Chlorophyll.a concentrations were positive significant with water temperature, pH, total phosphorus and total nitrogen, but is not significant with turbidity and suspended solids. Seasonal successions of algae were observed that Stephanodiscus sp. was dominant species with 65.3% of dominant frequency in studied site. Large algal biomass of the low temperature-adapted diatoms were observed during temperature range of $4{\sim}9^{\circ}C$, but large cyanobacterial biomass mainly during high temperature period ranged from $22^{\circ}C$ to $32^{\circ}C$. Microcystis sp. dominated during high water temperature in summer. The yearly correlations of algal biomass with accumulated solar radiations were not significant but seasonal correlations of summer from June to August were significant with correlation coefficient 0.33 (p<0.05). There were not significant correlations between turbidities and algal biomass. Turbidity and suspended solids concentrations were not significant correlation with algal biomass. According to the results, algal communities had strong correlation with water temperature and had partially correlation with solar radiation. For an effective management of algal blooms, water managers should survey with more long-term monitoring of various environmental factors and algal communities.
