  • Microbial community and composition in stormwater runoff from mixed land use land cover (LULC) catchment with ongoing land development was diverse across the hydrological stage due different environmental parameters (hydrometeorological and physicochemical) and source of runoff. However, limited studies have been made for bacterial composition in this catchment. Therefore, this study aims to: (1) quantify the concentration of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), stormwater quality and bacterial composition and structure according to hydrological stage; and (2) determine their correlation to environmental parameters. The 454 pyrosequencing was used to determine the bacterial community and composition; while Pearson's correlation was used to determine the correlation among parameters-FIB, stormwater quality, bacterial composition and structure-to environmental parameters. Results demonstrated that the initial and peak runoff has the highest concentration of FIB, stormwater quality and bacterial composition and structure. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were dominant bacteria identified in this catchment. Furthermore, the 20 most abundant genera were correlated with runoff duration, average rainfall intensity, runoff volume, runoff flow, temperature, pH, organic matter, nutrients, TSS and turbidity. An increase of FIB and stormwater quality concentration, diversity and richness of bacterial composition and structure in this study was possibly due to leakage from septic tanks, cesspools and latrines; feces of domestic and wild animals; and runoff from forest, destroyed septic system in land development site and urban LULC. Overall, this study will provide an evidence of hydrological stage impacts on the runoff microbiome environment and public health perspective.

  • To investigate the effect of dietary docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) and environmental enrichment on brain fatty acid composition and acetylcholinesterase(AChE) activity, two groups of was fed isocaloric diets containing 10 or 12% dietary lipids for 7 weeks. A third group was fed 10% (w/w) dietary lipids with supplemented 2% DHA-rich fish oil. Each diet group was housed either in a stainless steel cage individually or in a large enriched cage with toys where 7 rats were kept together. The fatty acid composition of plasma and brain was significantly affected by dietary lipid composition but not by environmental enrichment. Fish oil supplementation significanlty decreased plasma levels of monounsaturated fatty acids(MUFA) and increased polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA). Fish oil supplemented groups also maintained lower plasma n-6 fatty acids and higher n-3 fatty acids levels than unsupplemented groups. The fish oil supplementation significantly decreased arachidonic acid and increased eicosapentaenic, docosapentaenoic acids, and DHA in brain fatty acid composition. In addition, brain DHA level in supplemented groups tended higher than the unsupplemented. Brain, AChE activity significantly increased by the environmental enrichment but not by the fish oil supplementation. These finding suggest that the 2% fish oil (0.57% DHA & 0.31% EPA, per diet weigth) supplementation is enough to accumulate n-3 fatty acids and to change the n-6 n-3 ratio in brain and environmental enrichment might promote the learning ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate weighted compaction density according to a leading density in truck, a compaction density of solid waste and composition ratios of solid waste fur calculation of a capacity of the landfill sites. The experiments for calculations of in-place density at landfill site have been conducted in S landfill site at B City. The size of vessel for measuring the compaction density was $1m^3(1m{\times}1m{\times}1m)$. The experiment tests have been carried out methods (1 time for bulldozer and 4 times for compactor) that do contain all of specification at the landfill site. Average of the loading density at the landfill site was $0.264\;ton/m^3$ ($0.113{\sim}0.487\;ton/m^3$). When the loading density for each compositions was compared, the composition of the highest average loading density ($0.474\;ton/m^3$) was miscellaneous wastes. The composition of the lowest average loading density ($0.120 ton/m^3$) was general solid waste. The reported results indicated that the compaction density at the landfill site was $0.538\;ton/m^3$, which was calculated with weighted incoming ratios of compositions. The ranges of the density for each composition were from $0.021\;ton/m^3$ to $0.221\;ton/m^3$. When the compaction density for each composition was compared, the composition with the highest average compaction density ($0.221\;ton/m^3$) was miscellaneous wastes. The composition with the lowest average compaction density ($0.021\;ton/m^3$) was general solid wastes.

  • Mercury oxidation in an SCR(selective catalytic reduction) catalyst was tested in this study with the conditions simulating the SCR system in full-scale coal-fired flue gas. A commercially available SCR catalyst was located in a temperature-controlled reactor system, and simulated gas was injected into the reactor. Mercury oxidation efficiency was determined from the difference between inlet and outlet elemental mercury concentrations. A control experiment was carried out with the gas composition of 12% $CO_{2}$, 5% $H_{2}O$, 5% $O_{2}$, 500 ppm $SO_{2}$, 400 ppm NO, 400 ppm $NH_{3}$, 5 ppm HCl, and 20 ${\mu}g/m^{3}$ Hg. Additional tests were conducted with different gas composition from the control condition to investigate the effect of gas composition on mercury oxidation in the SCR catalyst.

  • In order to assess the effect of grazing on grasslands using floristic composition, we studied the floristic composition and plant biomass of steppe vegetation in Hulunbeier, Inner Mongolia. The dominant species of the grasslands were Stipa krylovii, Stipa grandis and Leymus chinensis. Floristic composition changed according to grazing pressure, being light, heavy and moderate. Under heavy grazing conditions, the importance value of P. acaulis, C. korshinskyi and Cleistogenes squarrosa increased in the plant community. These species were indicators of heavily grazed stand. Plant biomass of the stands ranged within 11.6g $m^{-2}$ and 63.5g $m^{-2}$ and 69.5g $m^{-2}$ and 166.2g $m^{-2}$ to the west and east of Lake Hulun, respectively. These values are equivalent to ca. $450{\sim}1,000kg$ of atmospheric carbon per hector, which is retained within the stand during the summer season.

  • The composition of water-friendly space in the port and harbour developments provides the accessibility to the sea and thus resting & recreational function of the local citizen, which should be treated importantly for the eco-friendly coastal development. However, the high demand on water-friendly space can induce another environmental problem because most port and harbour developments require marine reclamation and the water-friendly space are made up on the reclamation area. The present study analysed the problems and suggested matters to be considered in composing the water-friendly space of port and harbour developments. The study also established the management direction by site characteristics of port and harbour. In addition, we attempt to find a plan to avoid the water-friendly space composition with environmental damage and to secure the environmental and public soundness in site selection, land use and facilities plan based on case studies.

  • The traditional gold mining in Kulon Progo district, Special Region of Yogyakarta Province produced tailings containing mercury (Hg) from the gold amalgamation process. Mercury accumulated in tailings has 164.19 mg/kg - 383.21 mg/kg in total concentration. Stabilization/solidification (S/S) is one of the remediation technologies to reduce waste pollution. Portland cement is one of the additive materials in S/S that effective encapsulates heavy metal waste. The aim of this research is to know the optimum composition of tailings mixture with Portland cement in S/S process. This research used variation of tailings composition. Variation of Portland cement composition with tailing are 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, 40:60, 30:70, 20:80 and 10:90. The result of this study found that the optimum composition of Portland cement: tailings was 10:90, with compression test of $257ton/m^2$ and TCLP test was 0.0069 mg/L. The compression test results were in accordance to US EPA Standard quality of $35ton/m^2$. TCLP test results meet the standard of Indonesian Government Regulation No. 101 Year 2014 of 0.05 mg/L.

  • Ruspolia differens (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is a highly valued edible grasshopper species in Africa. However, the effects of plant diets on lipid content and fatty acid composition of R. differens are not well understood. We tested the effects of four diets on the total lipid content and fatty acid composition of R. differens. Sixth instar nymphs of R. differens were reared on one, and mixtures of two, three, and six natural plant inflorescences. Individuals collected from the field constituted a control treatment. We extracted lipids and analyzed the fatty acid methyl esters using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We analyzed if the total lipid content, body weight, and fatty acid composition differed among diets and between the sexes using two-way ANOVAs and a PERMANOVA model, respectively. The total lipid content and weight of R. differens did not differ among the diets. The nine common fatty acids were palmitic (mean across treatments, 26%), oleic (22%), palmitoleic (18%), linoleic (13%), stearic (7%), myristic (6%), myristoleic (4%), ${\alpha}$-linolenic (2%) and arachidic acid (1%). The composition of fatty acids and the proportion of essential fatty acids significantly differed among the diets. The proportion of essential fatty acids was highest in the control treatment (21%) but low in less diversified (one to three feed) diets (12-13%). This study demonstrates that the fatty acid composition in R. differens can be influenced through diet. Thus, with dietary manipulations, using local plants in Africa, it is possible to produce R. differens with preferred high quality essential fatty acids for human consumption.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the results of toxicity testing with Daphnia magna and Vibrio fischeri on wastewater samples which might be influenced by ion imbalance. The effluents from factories were found to be more toxic with high salinity levels than those from public wastewater treatment plant (WTP) and sewage treatment plant (SWP). Clion composition was highest in the effluent, in terms of percentage, which was followed by $Na^+$, $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Ca^{2+}$. $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ion was relatively low. The sensitivity of D. magna test results was higher than V. fischeri. Among samples which were proved by V. fischeri testing to be nontoxic, the composition ratio of each ion whether toxic samples or nontoxic samples which were decided by D. magna toxicity testing, were compared. $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ ion composition ratio showed high level in nontoxic samples whereas $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ ion composition ratio was high in toxic samples. Accordingly, $SO_4^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ ion seemed to be considered the ions causing toxicity in effluent. Toxicity from some categories of industries (Mining of non-metallic minerals, Manufacture of basic organic petrochemicals, Manufacture of other basic organic chemicals, Manufacture of other chemical products etc.) seemed to be influenced by salinity. The Ion concentration in influent and effluent were similar. Concentration of $Na^+$, $Cl^-$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ ions were high in influent, however $Mg^{2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ ions were high in effluent.

  • To resolve the differentiation problem of acetone and acrolein in the analysis of carbonyls by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we investigated the optimum analytical conditions for their separation. Carbonyl compounds were collected by 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH)-coated cartridges. We examined the influence of three experimental variables: temperature (25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 ${^{\circ}C}$), flow rate (1.0 and 1.2 mL/min), and relative mobile phase composition (among acetonitrile, water and tetrahydrofuran). The experimental results revealed the optimum analytical condition of a flow rate of 1.2 mL/min, temperature of 32 ${^{\circ}C}$ and mobile phase composition of acetonitrile: water: tetrahydrofuran = 34 : 52.8 : 13.2. The analysis of indoor air composition indicated that acrolein and acetone comprised 11% and 42% of all aldehydes, respectively.
