  • This work aims to investigate the oily wastewater treatment by the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) and propose a mathematical model for the efficiency prediction. Cutting oil was used to prepare the synthetic oily wastewater with submicron droplet sizes. The chemical coagulation by aluminium sulfate was firstly tested following by the electrocoagulation-flotation with aluminium electrodes. Both processes gave the effective treatment performance with the efficiencies higher than 90%. However, the ECF consumed less aluminium dosage as well as produced less sludge, which were its advantage on the chemical coagulation. The performance of the ECF was found to be affected by the current density, oil concentration, and reaction time according to the analysis by the design of experiment (DOE). Finally, the prediction model was proposed by two approaches, including linear and logarithm function. The latter model gave more accuracy prediction results in terms of treatment efficiency and duration in the lag and stable stages.

  • Global warming has pressured companies to put a greater emphasis on environment management which allows them to reduce environmental impact and costs of their operations. In Korea, the coal-fired power plants take a large account of electricity generation at 31.7% of the total electricity usage in 2014. Thus, environmental impact of coal-fired power plants is significant. This paper illustrated how to compute environmental impact and costs in electricity generation at a coal-fired power plant using MFCA methodology. Compared to the traditional accounting, an advantage of MFCA is to provide information on electricity generation costs and environmental wastes incurring throughout the production process of electricity. Based on MFCA, the coal-fired power plant was able to reduce production cost of electricity by 52.3%, and environmental wastes by 47.7%. As a result, MFCA seemed to be an effective tool in environmental management for power plants.

  • In Korea, open burning of agricultural residues is prevalent due to inadequate collection systems, which have caused environmental impacts such as GHGs and particulates. This illegal treatment of agricultural residues also results in economic loss, considering that agricultural residues can be utilized as resources such as pellets and energy sources. To understand the effect of avoiding open burning, this study evaluated the economic, environmental, and social effects of two alternative management options for agricultural residues: incineration and pelletizing. The study estimates the potential amount and dry weight by region for 18 items, taking various factors into account. Regarding the economic aspect, pelletizing facilities in all regions in Korea create economic benefits. This study shows that most regions have an environmental advantage by pelletizing residues. However, incineration creates more environmental benefits than pelletizing in metropolitan cities with relatively low density of residues. It is expected that the environmental, economic, and social findings of this study can be used to inform policies for bioenergy as the need for agricultural residue increases.

  • Displayed result that handle particle contaminant and hydrospace organism included a number of ballast that is happened in ship using automatic back washing filter. Reason that removes first contaminant that is included in number of ballast is that heighten processing effectof after processing processof the filter. Another advantage is to drop off the solids with controlling revolution of drum screen in pretreatment filtration process. The fact that it is easy to attach and detach a several type of screen for getting the expected water quality is another advantage. Filter rotation speed of filtration filter could be expose by 35mmHg more than 60 rpm and filter consecutively filtration pressure is 40.5mmHg in 20 rpm and 40 rpm are 36.6mmHg. Filtration system removal aquatic organism over $70{\mu}min$ ballast water. This study shows that the filtration treatment system has a potential for the treatment of ballast water.

  • This study is concerned with health damages from $SO_2$ under different assumptions on the relationship between air concentrations and their marginal health impacts. $SO_2$ concentration profiles resulting under emission caps, and a system of tradable emission allowances are compared. Using slopes and curvatures of the health response function consistent with evidence in medical literature, emission caps are shown to lead to lower aggregate damages under all considered parameters, an advantage of $26~452 million. The benefit of emission caps over tradable allowances increases with the curvature of the response function, but falls with its slope. The advantage of emission caps in terms of environmental damages is never overturned completely for the considered functional forms. The marginal damage function would have to be steeper than what the current medical evidence suggests for price instruments to outperform emission caps in terms of aggregate damages. With other welfare consequences included-emission abatement costs, consumer and producer surpluses, and government revenue-emission caps always lead to a $3.7~4.1 billion greater measure of social welfare.

  • Geo-radar survey which has the advantage of high-resolution and relatively fast survey has been widely used for engineering and environmental problems. Three-dimensional effects have to be considered in the interpretation of geo-radar for high-resolution. However, there exists a trouble on the analysis of the three dimensional effects. To solve this problem an efficient three dimension numerical modeling algorithm is needed. Numerical radar modeling in three dimensional case requires large memory and long calculating time. In this paper, a finite difference method time domain solution to Maxwell's equations for simulating electromagnetic wave propagation in three dimensional media was developed to make economic algorithm which requires smaller memory and shorter calculating time. And in using boundary condition Liao absorption boundary. The numerical result of cross-hole radar survey for tunnel is compared with real data. The two results are well matched. To prove application to three dimensional analysis, the results with variation of tunnel's incident angle to survey cross-section and the result when the tunnel is parallel to the cross-section were examined. This algorithm is useful in various geo-radar survey and can give basic data to develop dat processing and inversion program.

  • This paper presents a design framework developed using axiomatic design (AD) theory that can be applied in the design process of porous concrete. The main contribution of this paper is the definition of an AD framework based on the needs and functional requirements of porous concrete. The framework shows how AD theory can be used to provide guidelines for proportioning and manufacturing porous concrete. The advantage of the AD approach is that it systemizes the way to decouple design parameters and makes designers to think rationally between what we want to achieve and how we propose to satisfy the functional requirements of porous concrete. In this paper, test results of laboratory-size porous concrete specimens under compression were analyzed to evaluate the performance of the porous concrete based on the desired functional requirements.

  • Linear alkyl sulfonates (LAS) constitute a large fraction of the surfactants used in cleaning processes in households, trade and industry Despite the industrial significance and the possible environmental impact of these compounds, the fast and inexpensive determination of LAS concentrations is still a difficult task. In this study, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy which is a rapid spectroscopic analysis method compared with a traditional analytical method for the measurement of LAS concentration such as HPLC, GC and standard wet chemistry method. NIR spectra of LAS between 0.313 and 25.0% (w/v) in water were utilized to develop a calibration model. The best results (R = 0.998, SEP = 0.244% (w/v)) obtained by using partial least-squares regression with spectral data treatment and 2nd derivatization were comparable to the results (SEC = 0.186% (w/v), SEP = 0.206% (w/v)) obtained by using multiple linear least-squares regression (MLR). However, models based on derivative spectra have no significant advantage with MLR.

  • The air separation of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) and PS(Polystyrene) was carried out by taking advantage of the different abrasive resistance of two plastics. PET bottles and PS packages were shredded to small square pieces $(5{\times}5mm)$. Both plastic shreds were treated by a shear-type crusher. The PET shreds were bent and twisted by the crush so that they were blown up easily, but the PS shreds were not. After the crush of mixture of both plastics, air separation experiments were carried out using four types of air separators. The number and location of the baffle attached to them are different. With the separator with a baffle attached at the upper part, PET recoveries for the crushing time of 30, 60 and 90sec were 67, 98 and 99% respectably at the air flow rate of 3.5m/s, whereas PS recoveries were null regardless of the crushing time.
