  • The most widely-used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), for the total joint arthroplasty degrades after gamma-irradiation sterilization through the progressive oxidation in a shelf and in vivo. Oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to decrease in mechanical properties. In this study the relationship between post-gamma-irradiation aging time and wear of UHMWPE was investigated. Six retrieved polyethylene hip liners implanted for 3-16 years and then stored in air for 1.5-6.5 years until tests were used. Two types of pin-on-disk wear testing were conducted by the uni-directional repeat pass rotating and by the linear reciprocating stainless steel disks against stationary polyethylene pins under 4Mpa at 1Hz with bovine serum lubrication in ambient environment. Wear of retrieved polyethylene hip liners does not have direct correlation with in vivo or total aging time. Linear reciprocal sliding motion generated more remarkable wear than uni-directional repeat pass sliding motion. It indicates that kinematic motion affects very crucially on the wear of aged UHMWPE having brittle white band region.

  • Korean population is now aging at an unprecedented rate. Fertility decline together with rapid improvements in life expectancy is the dominant demographic trend. As human life and housing environment are inseparably related to each other, the importance of conditions of housing environment for active aging among seniors has been received considerable attention as vital ones to expand the independency period of seniors. The purpose of this case study is to identify relationships between environmental affordance and perceived holistic health of the active elderly living in a retirement community located in Seoul. With spending time personally in the community to observe their lives, the researcher could be in close rapport with the residents. After the period of getting familiar with each other, in-depth individual interview and focus group interview were conducted and then, qualitative analysis was completed. As a result, general evidences showed that perceived seniors' health on the whole was improved physically, socially, and mentally by moving into the community providing appropriate environment affordance with the older adults. The study presents that retirement relocation into an improper environment may be a negative challenge, however, it may positively influence on the health and well-being of those who live there if the environment properly supports seniors‘ needs physically and socially

  • With the progress of the aging society into the aged society, the planning of senior housing is inevitably required. Among the factors of planning, color appeals to people's vision which mostly accepts information about the environment, so age-related color vision changes should be studied. The purpose of the study is to find out characteristics of color perception focused on yellow and blue with advancing of the yellowed eye sight in the old age. The findings are as follows. (1) Regardless of gender, losses of color perception in sensitivity is occurred as aging is proceeded. But the rate of reduction is mitigated compared with the ex-research in Japan because of the promotion of physical health. (2) Human lens coloration was not common until 85 years old and the hue of yellow and red was easily perceived by the older subjects. (3) Yellow is more preferred to other colors by the elderly and accuracy of yellow-color perception is higher than that of blue-color. (4) It is especially hard for the elderly to perceive the difference between pure blue and mixture of blue-green. Therefore blue and blue-green should not be adopted simultaneously in senior housing environment. Except for the space which specially requires carefulness, various color preferred by the elderly should be applied to the senior housing environment to satisfy their psychological condition and provide the vitality of life.

  • This paper describes the efficient equipment maintenance that can offer the exact time for repair and change of component in root industry. A conventional method offered the fixed time for repair and change of component because the method is based on early guarantee specification of the component. However the operating condition of manufacturing field is often under worse condition than early guarantee condition for high productivity. So, most components can't use until early guarantee time due to the operation of various different condition. Therefore we suggest the useful method for efficient equipment-maintenance by manufacturing-field analysis and feedback database. For this, the classification of root industry and related equipment is performed and then the detail classification of the process and component for equipment maintenance. And the monitoring module is also designed to gather data for feedback process and the environment is basically implemented for aging and reliability test.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the middle aged's perception of aging and the degree of physical/financial/social preparation for later life and to explore the effect of the middle aged's perception of aging, who live in Gwangju & Jeonnam of Korea, on physical/financial/social preparation for later life. This research also explores gender differences in perception of aging, preparation for later life and related factors. For the purpose, the survey data was gathered from 424 middle aged (40's & 50's) citizens who live in Gwangju and Jeonnam, using structured questionnaire. The statistical methods used for data analysis are descriptive statistics, cross tables, t-test, correlations and regression with Spss/win 17.0 program. The major findings of this study are as follows: Most of the respondents perceive that the age of being aged is 65 or 70 years old. Respondents feel anxiety about health (84%), finance (57%) and roleless role (22%) of later life. Female group feel health anxiety more than male group. Many people perceive that social preparation for later life is better than financial preparation and physical preparation for later life. The result shows that female group perceives their physical preparation level more positively than male group generally. But, there were no differences in financial and social preparation between gender groups. Finally, the result shows the meaningful relationships between male group's perception of aging and financial preparation for later life. Monthly income is the most important variable predicting preparation for later life.

  • There are little program and services that have been developed to address the health and health care needs of vulnerable women. The access for their timely and appropriate health care and health promotion services have been a increasing concern. The purpose of this study was to suggest health promotion program for vulnerable women with collaboration of women's NGOs. At the first part of this study, we reviewed a conceptual framework for identifying vulnerable population, and issues regarding health problems, unmet needs, policies and programs that have been developed to address their need. In second part, we focused on investigating the role, subjects and activities of women's NGOs and their capacity for health promotion program. The last part of this study proposed health promotion programme with integrating above two parts of study. In describing what type of health promotion program available in women's NCOs, eight major programs and services were summarized. 1. Direct health promotion program and collaborating program with other services. 2. Education and training for empowerment of vulnerable women 3. Organizing mutual support system such as self-help group 4. Community supports. Vulnerable women living at home may benefit from linkage to community services as much as women living in facility 5. Organizing collaboration system with program for economic support and job training, social rehabilitation 6. Trainer's training for practitioners in NGOs 7. Technical, informational support from professional groups 8. A national coordinating policies for vulnerable population should be established at the central level. • Due to the presence of ferrite phase in the finished welds, austenitic stainless steel welds (ASSWs) are considered susceptible to the thermal aging embrittlement during long-term service in light water reactor environment. In this study, the thermal aging embrittlement of typical ASSWs, E308 and ER316L welds, were evaluated after the long-term exposure up to 20,000 h at $400^{\circ}C$, which is considered as an accelerated thermal aging condition. After thermal aging, the decrease of tensile ductility and fracture toughness was observed. The microstructure observation with high resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that spinodal decomposition in ferrite phase of both E308 and ER316L welds would be the main cause of the degradation of mechanical properties. Also, it was shown that the difference of thermal ageing embrittlement between ER316L and E308 welds was significant, such that the reduction of fracture resistance for ER316L weld was much larger than that of E308 weld.

  • Universal design has been disseminated as one of major paradigms in the 21st century throughout the world. Its definition and range of application have appeared somewhat differently from countries and cultures. Japan has been coping with aging phenomena in societies population, and now became aged society. Therefore, universal design has been a big social issue and its design development has tendency of focusing on design for the elderly population. Currently, Japanese housing in its aging society has shown various experiments to provide the elderly with safe and supportive environment to maintain and promote quality of their lives in conventional life settings. Korea already began to undergo this aging process, and now it's in aging society. This means especially designers need to show up their creativity to let design function as a means of social intervention. Therefore this research showed the range of universal design characteristics appeared in current Japanese housing market.

  • This paper aims to explore the role of the home economics subject in helping high school students preparing for an independent aged life and to develop problem based teaching plans toward this goal. Contents related to the elderly in the high school home economics and technology 2007 and 2009 revised curricula were analyzed, and elderly-related contents in other subject areas (the 2009 revised curricula of ethics, public health, and social studies) were also comparatively analyzed to determine the identity of the home economics subject in relation to preparation for independent aging. Based on these analysis, five subjects and teaching plans were presented: the aging society and population changes, the characteristics of the elderly, individual preparation for aging, care of the elderly, and welfare services for the elderly. The ultimate objectives of the lessons were, through critical reasoning, to inquire into the causes of current problems the elderly face so that teenagers can understand aging societies and the elderly and to seek reasonable alternatives for teenagers as they prepare for successful and independent aging, increasing their problem-solving abilities in choosing the best course of action by considering the ripple effect of consequences of each of those alternatives. Suggestions on what direction elderly-related education should take in the future, and what roles teachers should take are also provided.

  • Recently the extensive use of composite insulators for transmission lines can ultimately be justified only on long-term qualification tests. Especially, it is possible for the Polymer insulator to be aged in according to the environment in which it is used this may bring about the decrease of the duration of voltage application. So, this paper deals with aging property of the polymer insulator installed at real transmission line in the industry area. The contact angle, arc test, tracking test were measured for acquiring the degradation characteristics of silicone rubber and the SEM, XRF, FT-IR tests were measured for analyzing the crack and components. Also the surface leakage current of the polymer insulator was compared with that of the porcelain insulator. Finally, we knew that the aging property was not appeared during seven months at real transmission line in the industry area.
