  • Mathematical models for various steps in coal gasification reactions were developed and applied to investigate the effects of operation parameters on dynamic behavior of gasification process. Chemical reactions considered in these models were pyrolysis, volatile combustion, water shift reaction, steam-methane reformation, and char gasification. Kinetics of heterogeneous reactions between char and gaseous agents was based on Random pore model. Momentum balance and Stokes' law were used to estimate the residence time of solid particles (char) in an up-flow reactor. The effects of operation parameters on syngas composition, reaction temperature, carbon conversion were verified. Parameters considered here for this purpose were $O_2$-to-coal mass ratio, pressure of reactor, composition of coal, diameter of char particle. On the basis of these parametric studies some quantitative parameter-response relationships were established from both dynamic and steady-state point of view. Without depending on steady state approximation, the present model can describe both transient and long-time limit behavior of the gasification system and accordingly serve as a proto-type dynamic simulator of coal gasification process. Incorporation of heat transfer through heterogenous boundaries, slag formation and steam generation is under progress and additional refinement of mathematical models to reflect the actual design of commercial gasifiers will be made in the near futureK.

The coal gasification process converts carbon containing coal into a syngas, composed primarily of CO and $H_2$. And the coal syngas can be used as a source for power generation or chemical material production. This paper illustrates the opeartion characteristics and results of pilot-scale coal syngas production facilities. The entrained-bed pilot scale coal gasifier was operated normally in the temperature range of $1,300{\sim}1,400^{\circ}C,\;2{\sim}3kg/cm^2$ pressure. And Indonesian KPC coal produced syngas that has a composition of $46{\sim}54%\;CO,\;20{\sim}26%\;H_2,\;and\;5{\sim}8%\;CO_2$.

  • Gasification has been regarded as a very important technology to decrease environmental pollution and to obtain higher efficiency. The gasification process converts carbon containing feedstock into a synthesis gas, composed primarily of CO and $H_2$. And the synthesis gas can be used as a source for power generation or chemical material production. Through more than nine years, IAE developed and upgraded several gasification/melting pilot plant system, and obtained a good quality synthesis gas. This paper illustrates the gasification characteristics and operation results of two 3 ton/day synthesis gas production facilities. One is entrained-bed slagging type coal gasifier system which is normally operated in the temperature range of $1,400\~1,450^{\circ}C,\;8\~10$ bar pressure. And the other is fixed-bed type gasification/melting furnace system using MSW and industrial wastes as a feedstock.

  • Gasification plant using petroleum coke for refinery and power generation process is increased from considering petroleum coke as a valuable fuel. In this study, gasification of petroleum coke was performed to utilize petroleum coke and to develop essential technology using 1T/D coal gasification system. In case of petroleum coke gasification, because of lower reactivity, consumption of oxygen is higher than coal gasification. The calorific value of syngas from petroleum coke mixed with coal at a mass ratio of 1:1 shows about $6.7{\sim}7.2MJ/Nm^3$. Although carbon conversion could reach more than 92% according to oxygen amount, cold gas efficiency shows lower value than the case of coal. Therefore, it was shown that complemental study in burner design to atomize slurry droplet is required to elevate gasification performance of petroleum coke which has lower reactivity than coal.

  • Recently, gasification technology for coal blended with biomass has been an issue. Especially, An advantages of coal blended with biomass are 1) obtaining high cold gas efficiency, 2) obtaining syn-gas of high-high heating value (HHV), and 3) controlling occurrence of $CO_2$. In this study, the efficiency and characteristic of 300 MW Shell type gasifier were predicted using CFD simulation. The CFD simulation was performed for biomass coal blending ratios of 0~0.2, 0.5, 1 and $O_2$/fuel ratios of 0.5~0.84. Kinetic parameters (A, $E_a$) obtained by $CO_2$ gasification experiment were used as inputs for the simulation. In results of CFD simulation, residence times of particle in 300MW Shell type gasifer presented as 7.39 sec ~ 13.65 sec. Temperature of exit increased with $O_2$/fuel ratio as 1400 K ~ 2800 K, while there is not an effects of biomass coal blending ratios. Considering both aspects of temperature for causing wall slagging and high cold gas efficiency, the optimal $O_2$/fuel ratio and blending ratio were found to be 0.585 and 0.05, respectively.

  • Mathematical models for char-slag interaction and near-wall particle segregation developed by Montagnaro et. al. were applied to predict various aspects of coal gasification in an up-flow entrained gasifier of commercial scale. For this purpose, some computer simulations were performed using gPROMS as the numerical solver. Typical design parameters and operating conditions of the commercial gasifiers were used as input values for the simulation. Development of a densely dispersed phase of solid carbon was found to have a critical effect on both carbon conversion and ash flow behavior. In general, such a slow-moving phase was turned out to enhance carbon conversion by lengthening the residence time of char or soot particles. Furthermore, it was also found that guiding the transfer of char or soot into the closer part of the wall to coal burner is favorable in terms of gasification efficiency and vitrified ash collection. Finally, to a certain degree densely dispersed phase of carbon showed an yield-enhancing effect of syngas.

  • This study has been implemented to investigate various characteristics of coals which are imported from abroad. KIER has developed 1 T/D bench-scale unit, entrained-flow coal-slurry gasification technology to investigate the followings: 1) to assess the appropriate foreign coals for gasification. 2) to establish the data base for gasification phenomena, 3) to minimize the technical risks prior to introduction of commercial scaled IGCC power plant, 4) to develop essential key technologies and to establish operational experiences for coal gasification. The foreign coals used in the gasification are Cyprus and Alaska coals from U. S. A. Cyprus coal(bituminous) and Alaska coal (lignite) were shown about 1.29$0^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of coal-slurry for Cyprus were maintained up to 58%, 62% and 65% in order to enable to feed satisfactorily it into the gasifier without any other problems at feeding systems. However, the Alaska coal was unable to maintain slurry concentration over the 60% due to its high viscosity. During the experiments, $O_2/coal$ ratios in both coals ere maintained from 0.6~1.2, but especially Alaska coal was required excessive oxygen feed due to its high ingerent moisture contents. During the experiments with two different coals, the concentrations of syngas $(H_2+CO)$ were shown as 40~62%, and the heating value of syngas were detected as 1,400~2,050 kcal/N㎥
