  • Enhanced tubes are used widely in the heat exchangers of absorption chillers. In regenerators, corrugated, ribbed or floral tubes are commonly used. In this study, the tube-side heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of enhanced tubes were obtained experimentally using the Wilson Plot method. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficients and the friction factors were the largest for the corrugated tube, followed by the ribbed tube. The heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the floral tube matched those of the smooth tube within 4%, which suggests that the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the floral tube may be accounted for properly by the hydraulic diameter. The B(e+) and g(e+) were obtained from the experimental data of the corrugated and ribbed tube. The B(e+) and g(e+) of the corrugated tube matched those of the existing correlation within 20%. The present results may be used for an assessment of the heat transfer and friction characteristics of the enhanced tubes for regenerators.

  • The effect of nanofluids on the heat transfer performance of a pulsating heat pipe has been experimentally investigated. Water-based diamond nanofluid and aluminium oxide ($Al_2O_3$) nanofluid were tested in the concentration range of 0.5-5%. The pulsating heat pipe was constructed using clear Pyrex tubes of 1.85 mm in inner diameter in order to visualize the pulsating action. The total number of turns was eight each for heated and cooled parts. The supply temperatures of heating water and cooling water were fixed at $80^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ respectively. The liquid charging ratio of the nanofluid was 50-70%. The test results showed that the case of 5% concentration of diamond nanofluid showed 18% increase in heat transfer rate compared to pure water. The case of 0.5% concentration of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluid showed 24% increase in heat transfer rate compared to pure water. But the increase of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluid concentration up to 3% did not show further enhancement in heat transfer. It is also observed that the deposited nanoparticles on the tube wall played a major role in enhanced evaporation of working fluid and this could be the reason for the enhancement of heat transfer by a nanofluid, not the enhanced thermal conductivity of the nanofluid.

  • Spray cooling is a technology of increasing interest for electronic cooling and other high heat flux applications. In this study, heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat fluxes (CHFs) are measured on a smooth square flat copper heater of $9.53{\times}9.53mm$ at $36^{\circ}C$ in a pool, a smooth flat surface and Thermoexcel-E surfaces are used to see the change in HTCs and CHFs according to the surface characteristics and FC-72 is used as the working fluid. FC-72 fluid has a significant influence on heat transfer characteristics of the spray over the cooling surface. HTCs are taken from $10kW/m^2$ to critical heat flux for all surfaces. Test results with Thermoexcel-E showed that CHFs of all enhanced surface is greatly improved. It can be said that surface form affects heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux.

  • In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of two non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC134a and HF0134a/HCF0123 at various compositions were measured on both low fin and Turbo-C enhanced tubes of 19.0 mm outside diameter All data were taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3- 8 K. Test results showed that HTCs of the tested mixtures on the enhanced tubes were much lower than the ideal values calculated by the mass fraction weighting of the pure compo- nents'HTCs. Also the reduction of HTCs due to the diffusion vapor film was much larger than that of a plain tube. Unlike HTCs of pure fluids, HTCs of the mixtures measured on enhanced tubes increased as the wall subcooling increased, which was due to the sudden break up of the vapor diffusion film with an increase in wall subcooling. Finally, heat transfer enhancement ratios for mixtures were found to be much lower than those of pure fluids.

  • Heat sink has extended surface area for enhanced heat transfer. The enhanced convection heat transfer has been used widely, such as cooling electronic chips in the electronics industry. Heat sink usually requires an increase in the heat transfer and a decrease in the pressure drop, and must improve the performance in the flow field of industrial plants. In this study, wing fin heat sink was studied and tests were conducted in a rectangular cross sectional channel with wing fin heat sinks. The leading and trailing ends of a wing fin have a sharp edge, simulating the airfoil feature. Empirical correlations have been developed for wing fin heat sink types. And wing fin heat sinks have better cooling performance than elliptic fin and square fin types.

  • Axisymmetric circular water jet impinges against rectangular heated surface with uniform hear flux and wire-mesh screens are set up in the nozzle-to-heater space to augment heat transfer. In the free jet region to be used them, pressure drop and intensive turbulence flow was brought up. When water jet system is not used wire-mesh screens, maximum heat transfer appears in the stagnation point and the secondary maximum appears X/D=4 but it disappears when they are is used. In the low velocity(Vo<6.0m/s), coarse mesh-screen enhanced heat transfer but fine mesh-screens inpeded heat transfer. In the high velocity(Vo>6m/s), all of them enhanced heat transfer. Average Nusselt number of experimental system to be used wire-mesh screens was promoted $4{\sim}6$times than that of simple water jet system. The stagnation heat transfer of experimental system to be used wire-mesh screens was augmented 6times that of simple water jet system.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the heat transfer characteristics on enhanced surfaces, to develop experimental correlations of friction factor and Nusselt number, and to provide a guideline for optimum operation conditions at low temperature boiling for practical refrigeration applications. The working fluid (water, EG $30\%$) flows inside the enhanced tube and R134a boils on the outer surface. Two different types of Turbo-B tubes (Tube I and Tube II) are tested in the present study. The results show that Tube I gives a higher heat transfer coefficient with higher friction factor than Tube II. The present study provided experimental correlations for friction factor and heat transfer coefficient with error bands of ${\pm}5\%\;and\;{\pm}\;15\%$, respectively.

  • The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for HFC-l34a in flat plate type heat exchangers with enhanced beads were experimentally investigated. Three plate type evaporators with different geometric condition of U-turn area were tested. Mass fluxes were tested over the range of 83kg/$m^2$s to 166kg/$m^2$s, and heat fluxes were varied from 4㎾/$m^2$ to 12㎾/$m^2$. Evaporation temperature was 5$^{\circ}C$ with inlet qualities of 0.1 to 1.0. There was no notable difference in the heat transfer coefficient by geometric variation of U-turn area, but the third plate with cross-ribbed channel at U-turn area was better than others in the evaluation using volume goodness factor comparison. Also, the mixtures of HFC-l34a and PAG oil was tested to determine oil effects on heat transfer and pressure drop. As oil concentration was increased, heat transfer coefficient was increased by 22~48% up to the 3wt.%, but decreased by 14~22% at the 4wt.%. The pressure drop was increased by the maximum of 100% as oil concentration was increased.

  • The characteristics of combustion and radiation heat transfer of an oxygen-enhanced diffusion flame was experimentally analyzed. An infrared radiation heat flux gauge was used to measure the thermal radiation of various types of flames with fuel, air and pure oxygen. And the Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) technique was applied to characterize the soot concentrations which mainly contribute to the continuum radiation from flame. The results show that an oxygen-enhanced inverse diffusion flame is very effective in increasing the thermal radiation compared to normal oxygen diffusion flame. This seems to be caused by overlapped heat release rate of double flame sheets formed in inverse flame and generation of higher intermediate soot in fuel rich zone of oxygen-fuel interface, which is desirable to increase continuum radiation. And the oxygen/methane reaction at slight fuel rich condition (ø=2) in oxygen-enhanced inverse flame was found to be more effective to generate the soot with moderate oxygen availability.
