  • An important process for making a new class of polymeric material is called microcellular plastics invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Many researches for microcellular plastics have been done in various ways and fields. But a research for the polymer which has previous history has not been tried yet. In this paper, weight gain of $CO_2$ was measured in a polymer matrix which had previous history and no history. In each case, experimental data for solubility and diffusivity was shown. A model for $CO_2$ solution process in molecular range was made. The conclusion of this paper is that the previous history has an effect on diffusivity but not solubility and the previous history made by $CO_2$ in supercritical state makes diffusivity of $CO_2$ larger.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced composites(CFRP) were fabricated with phenolic resin matrix by hot press molding, and its surface was modified by the ion-assisted reaction process. When we tested the friction coefficient and wear rate variation and observed the effect of fibers with respect to friction and wear characteristics, the amount of pitch based carbon fiber was 45wt% and the average friction coefficient was the lowest at 0.12. When the amount of ion-irradiation was $1\times10^{l6}ions/cm^2$, the friction coefficient of the composites was about 0.12 and the wear mode was stable, whereas, the friction coefficient of the non-treated composites was about 0.16 and the wear mode was very unstable. But if the amount of ion-irradiation was $5\times10^{l6}ions/cm^2$$1\times10^{l6}ions/cm^2$ion-irradiation case.

  • In this paper, mechanical and hygroscopic properties of teak sawdust and recycled polypropylene (RPP) composites are evaluated and compared with virgin polypropylene (VPP) matrix based composites. Verities of composites are prepared by variation in the plastic types, wood plastic ratio and the addition of coupling agent in the formulations. Mixing of wood sawdust and polypropylene is done by a twin screw extruder, and then sheets of wood plastic composites (WPCs) are produced by using the compression molding method. The results show that recycled matrix composites exhibit better tensile, flexural strength with low impact strength than virgin matrix based composites. Recycled composites show low water absorption and thickness of swelling than virgin matrix based composites. The results confirm that wood content in the polymer matrix affects the performance of composites while presence maleated polypropylene (MAPP) improves the properties of the composites significantly. Developed RPP matrix composites are as useful as VPP matrix composites and have the potential to replace the wood and plastics products without any adverse effect of the plastics on the environment.

  • We use so many plastic products in everyday. Because polymer materials have a lot of merits including low cost and easiness of forming, they are widely used in many manufacturing industries. Microcellular foaming process was developed at MIT in 1980's to save a quantity of materials and increase mechanical properties. The improvement of strength is very important factor in relation with the reduction of mass. So the first purpose of this research is to improve the strength of the microcellular foamed plastics as variation of glass-fiber's volume friction. Also the characteristic of filler such as glass-fiber was presented in a microcellular foaming process.

  • It is well known that the loss factor and Young's modulus are fundamental mechanical properties of materials. Recently, the use of complex plastics is increasing for vibration proof. In this study, we evaluated two mechanical values of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene by using two different standard test methods of ASTM E 756 and ISO 6721. Because damping properties of material generally depend on temperature, test specimen‘s temperature were controlled in the temperature range between - $10^{\circ}C\;and\;60^{\circ}C$. The results shown that the loss factor of polycarbonate gradually increased as increasing temperature, while the Young's modulus decreased. However, the loss factor and the Young's modulus of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene are varied somewhat at $60^{\circ}C$.

  • With the development of industrial society, the interest of new material is growing even in machining center. Composite materials in the new materials are superior to the metals In measure stability of strength, modulus and heat, moreover when mould is prepared, it can be done net shape manufacturing so it can be used widely in all sorts of machine parts, interior materials of car structural construct ions, the space aerial industry, ship materials, sports goods and so on. Therefore in this study, the property of processing drill on CFRP in composite materials by experimental study and some problems were examined.

  • Due to their high corrosion and chemical resistance, fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are becoming widely used as the main structural material for industrial chimneys. However, no national code currently exists for the design of such type of chimneys. The purpose of this study is to investigate analytically the response of FRP chimneys to wind loads. The classical lamination theory is used to substitute the angle-ply laminate of a FRP chimney with an equivalent orthotropic material that provides the same stiffness. Dynamic wind loads are applied to the equivalent chimney to evaluate its response to both along and across wind loads. A parametric study is then conducted to identify the material and geometric parameters affecting the response of FRP chimneys to wind loads. Unlike the across-wind response, the along-wind tip deflection is found to be highly dependent on the angle of orientation of the fibers. In general, the analysis shows that FRP chimneys are very vulnerable to across-wind oscillations resulting from the vortex shedding phenomenon.

  • As the first step in discussing the reliability of composite structures, a fundamental study was performed to obtain the scattering characteristics of glass-fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) and woven carbon fiber reinforced plastics (WCFRP) as well as a reference metal. The Euler buckling load was obtained experimentally for each material. The experiments were conducted for specified rectangular specimens with simply supported edges. A new attachment to realize the simply support boundary conditions for composite materials have been prepared before these experiments. The scattering data in the results for GFRP and WCFRP composites were compared with those of a typical metal of aluminum alloy. The experimental data were also compared with numerical simulations including the uncertainties.
