Integration of the Engine Control into the Optimal Trajectory Determination for a Spaceplane

  • In this paper are presented TSTO system analysis including some controlled variables on the engine operation such as a fuel flow rate and a pressure ratio of compressor, as well as variables on the trajectory. TSTO studied here is accelerated up to Mach 6 by a fly-back booster powered by air breathing engines. Three different types of engine cycle were treated for propulsion system of the booster, such as a turbo ramjet, a precooled turbojet and an EXpander cycle Air Turbo Ramjet (ATREX). The history of the controlled variables on the engine operation was optimized by Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) to accomplish the minimum fuel consumption. The trajectory was also optimized simultaneously. The results showed that the turbo ramjet gave the best fuel consumption. The optimal trajectory was almost the same except in the transonic range and just before reaching to Mach 6. The history of the pressure ratio of compressor considerably depended on the engine type. It is concluded that simultaneous optimization for engine control and trajectory is effective especially for a high-speed airplane propelled by turbojets like the TSTO booster.

  • In this paper, through the example of international lunar exploration mission the equipment was to investigate, and the amount of data transferred per day were identified. Data storage and the data transfer rate (8.4Mbps less) for the satisfaction of the value within the range of available S and X bands was confirmed by using the communication link budget. The result is to define the range of the sensor information can be obtained, as well as from the values of the parameters calculated for the transmission communication systems will be able to define the specifications.

  • A new evolution method for strong exploration and strong exploitation termed queen-bee and mutant-bee evolution is proposed based on the previous queen-bee evolution [1]. Even though the queen-bee evolution has shown very good performances, two parameters for strong mutation are added to the genetic algorithms. This makes the application of genetic algorithms with queen-bee evolution difficult because the values of the two parameters are empirically decided by a trial-and-error method without a systematic method. The queen-bee and mutant-bee evolution has no this problem because it does not need additional parameters for strong mutation. Experimental results with typical problems showed that the queen-bee and mutant-bee evolution produced nearly similar results to the best ones of queen-bee evolution even though it didn't need to select proper values of additional parameters.

  • The Engineering Test Satellite VIII(ETS-VIII) of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(JAXA) uses a 20mN class xenon ion engine subsystem(IES) for North-South Station Keeping(NSSK). The IES was modified for a larger satellite with longer lifetime based on the former IES. ETS-VIII, a three-ton class geosynchronous satellite with 10 years bus lifetime, was launched 18 Dec. 2006 JST; it reached the planned orbit and all bus systems were checked out. The IES showed good results and is now under normal operation. The total accumulated operation time of the IES in orbit was about 2300 hours till $19^{th}$ Dec. 2007.

  • As artificial intelligence technology advances, it is being applied to various application fields. Artificial intelligence is performing well in the field of image recognition and classification. Chip design specialized in this field is also actively being studied. Artificial intelligence-specific chips are designed to provide optimal performance for the applications. At the design task, memory component optimization is becoming an important issue. In this study, the optimal algorithm for the memory size exploration is presented, and the optimal memory size is becoming as a important factor in providing a proper design that meets the requirements of performance, cost, and power consumption.

Hydraulic conductivity estimation by considering the existence of piles: A case study

  • Estimation of hydraulic parameters is a critical step during design of foundation dewatering works. When many piles are installed in an aquifer, estimation of the hydraulic conductivity should consider the blocking of groundwater seepage by the piles. Based on field observations during a dewatering project in Shanghai, hydraulic conductivities are back-calculated using a numerical model considering the actual position of each pile. However, it is difficult to apply the aforementioned model directly in field due to requirement to input each pile geometry into the model. To develop a simple numerical model and find the optimal hydraulic conductivity, three scenarios are examined, in which the soil mass containing the piles is considered to be a uniform porous media. In these three scenarios, different sub-regions with different hydraulic conductivities, based on either automatic inverted calculation, or on effective medium theory (EMT), are established. The results indicate that the error, in the case which determines the hydraulic conductivity based on EMT, is less than that determined in the automatic inversion case. With the application of EMT, only the hydraulic conductivity of the soil outside the pit should be inverted. The soil inside the pit with its piles is divided into sub-regions with different hydraulic conductivities, and the hydraulic conductivity is calculated according to the volume ratio of the piles. Thus, the use of EMT in numerical modelling makes it easier to consider the effect of piles installed in an aquifer.

GPR Exploration of Non-metallic Water Pipes Linked with Network RTK (네트워크 RTK와 연계한 비금속 상수관의 GPR 탐사)

  • GPR is used for non-destructive investigations, ground investigations, and underground facilities exploration at construction sites. In this study, the applicability to GPR exploration of water pipes linked to Network RTK was presented. Data on the water supply pipes in the study site were acquired using GPR, and the location and depth of buried water pipes could be measured. The accuracy was evaluated from the GNSS observation performance and showed a deviation of -0.16m ~ 0.15m. This satisfied the equipment performance of the public survey work regulation, suggesting that the exploration of water pipes using GPR is possible. Because GPR does not require grounding installation, as in conventional metal pipe detectors, it will increase the efficiency of work for underground facility exploration. Exploration using GPR can acquire the location and depth of metallic and non-metallic underground facilities, so it can be utilized in the construction of a GIS system. If a comparison of the exploration characteristics is carried out, it will be possible to present various uses of underground facility exploration using GPR.

전자탐사를 이용한 지하 이상대 영상화

  • Among the geophysical exploration methods, electromagnetic method(EM) has the broadest range of instrumental systems and remarkable range of applications. There are a lot of available techniques and instruments which have different depth of investigation and resolution depending on the operating frequency and source-receiver configuration. Furthermore, it is very easy to apply on the engineering and environmental problems since modern EM equipments are remarkably portable, considering their sophistication. Even though electromagnetic theory is very complex and not easy to understand, rapid avances in recent computer technology have made it possible to conduct accurate forward modeling and inversion of various EM exploration data. Here, we are going to provide brief theoretical principles, survey techniques and case histories of some selected EM methods that can be applied to geotechnical and environmental problems in Korea.

Damping BGP Route Flaps

  • BGP route flap damping(RFD) was anecdotally considered to be a key contributor to the stability of the global Internet inter-domain routing system. However, it was recently shown that RFD can incorrectly suppress for substantially long periods of time relatively stable routes, i.e., routes that only fail occasionally. This phenomenon can be attributed to the complex interaction between BGP path exploration and how the RFD algorithm identifies route flaps. In this paper we identify a distinct characteristic of BGP path exploration following a single network event such as a link or router failure. Based on this characteristic, we distinguish BGP route updates during BGP path exploration from route flaps and propose a novel BGP route flap damping algorithm, RFD+. RFD+ has a number of attractive properties in improving Internet routing stability. In particular, it can correctly suppress persistent route flaps without affecting routes that only fail occasionally. In addition to presenting the new algorithm and analyzing its properties, we also perform simulation studies to illustrate the performance of the algorithm.
