  • There is much architectural and engineering literature which discusses the virtues of exterior bracing and diagrid systems in regards to sustainability - two systems which generally reduce building materials, enhance structural performance, and decrease overall construction cost. By surveying past, present as well as possible future towers, this paper examines another attribute of these structural systems - the blend of structural functionality and aesthetics. Given the external nature of these structural systems, diagrids and exterior bracings can visually communicate the inherent structural logic of a building while also serving as a medium for artistic effect. Viewed in this light, the visual appeal of these systems can be enhanced to give a tower a more distinct urban identity. This entails the creation of structural elements that are aesthetically pleasing, geometrically coherent and that demonstrate dexterity of application in regards to a building's composition, while also respecting the laws of physics and mechanics. In this fashion, an artistic approach can exhibit structural systems as not just purely rational features that enable the construction of tall buildings, but as important visual components that afford opportunities for creative expression. This paper, therefore, synthesizes the concepts of structural performance and creative artistry to facilitate a better understanding of the aesthetic developments in skyscrapers worldwide.

  • This study consists of an analysis of pre-existing ceiling construction systems as well as the development of a replacement unitary, lightweight steel ceiling system and related legal standards. Based on the material conditions and progression of the study, appropriate components were chosen and details were modified by mock-up test. A final study model was evaluated for performance and adaptability based on four parameters (indoor environment, constructability, budget economy, and aesthetics) and compared to the pre-existing ceiling system. As a result of the initial study, a lightweight steel design was created consisting of a reinforced structure with modular bars and entry holes for components. This system was hung directly on the suspension structure. The new design increased lighting and acoustic performance adapted to an indoor environment. Moreover, the speed of construction was increased by approximately 30%, the cost was decreased by approximately 20%, and ceiling aesthetics were improved.

  • In recent years, the number of foot disease patients is increasing due to bad walking habits and wearing shoes. With the development of shoes and living environment, no one can be relieved from foot disease. A study on the effect of shoe design characteristics on satisfaction and purchase intention when a patient with foot disease purchases orthopedic shoes. The shoe design characteristics consisted of functionality, convenience, and aesthetics. This study is conducted from various perspectives, such as frequency of participation in social activities, purpose of wearing, and status and characteristics of each foot disease. It is expected that the research results will lead to the development of orthopedic shoe designs that can be usefully worn by patients with orthopedic mild foot disease in their daily life, and to lead to practical use and satisfaction.

  • Severe cartilage defects and congenital anomalies affect millions of people and involve considerable medical expenses. Tissue engineering offers many advantages over conventional treatments, as therapy can be tailored to specific defects using abundant bioengineered resources. This article introduces the basic concepts of cartilage tissue engineering and reviews recent progress in the field, with a focus on craniofacial reconstruction and facial aesthetics. The basic concepts of tissue engineering consist of cells, scaffolds, and stimuli. Generally, the cartilage tissue engineering process includes the following steps: harvesting autologous chondrogenic cells, cell expansion, redifferentiation, in vitro incubation with a scaffold, and transfer to patients. Despite the promising prospects of cartilage tissue engineering, problems and challenges still exist due to certain limitations. The limited proliferation of chondrocytes and their tendency to dedifferentiate necessitate further developments in stem cell technology and chondrocyte molecular biology. Progress should be made in designing fully biocompatible scaffolds with a minimal immune response to regenerate tissue effectively

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm for adjusting the position of a user-specified object considering image aesthetics. Specifically, the user-specified object is positioned according to the rule of thirds by inserting or deleting unimportant seam lines from the image. To find such seam lines, a novel weight map is designed using the spatial and color distances from the object. We also design and analyze two approaches to seam carving and insertion. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be used as an effective semi-automatic image recomposition scheme.

  • This paper presents some simple thinking on an age-old question that given a bridge of a certain span and loading, from the point of view of the structural efficiency, where should the bridge deck be positioned? Generally, this decision is made for other reasons than structural efficiency such as aesthetics and the analyst is often presented with a fait accompli. Using the recently invented Evolutional Structural Optimisation (ESO) method, it is possible to demonstrate that having the deck at different vertical locations can lead to a very different mass and shape for each structural form resembling cable-stayed and cable-truss bridges. By monitoring a performance index which is the function of stresses and volume of discretised finite elements, the best optimised structure can be easily determined and the bridge deck positioning problem can be efficiently solved without resorting to any complex analysis procedures.

  • More complex geometric shapes, including freeform surfaces, are adopted for the design of products to emphasize styling or aesthetics. Modeling of these products is extremely difficult, and often impossible. Reverse engineering is an emerging technology that can resolve this problem by generating CAD models from the physical mockups or prototype models. The laser scanner if often used to acquire the surface information of the part, but is limited in its measuring direction, which if fixed only along the z-axis. A Designed fixture of new shape to supplement these problems in this paper. The new fixture using several joints and an tooling ball holder is designed considering the convenience of the part set-up and the accuracy of the registration. The location of the tooling balls can be arranged to avoid the occlusion of the part and to minimize the registration error. The new fixture is apply to an object part having freeform surfaces to verify the effectiveness of the proposed design.

  • For reverse engineering, curves and surfaces are modeled for new products by interpolating the digitized data points. But there are many measuring or deviation errors. Therefore, it is important to handle errors during the curve or surface modeling. If the errors are ignored, designer could get undesirable results. For this reason, fairing procedure with the aesthetics criteria is necessary in computer modeling. This paper presents methods of 3D NURBS curve fairing. The techniques are based on automatic repositioning of the digitized dat points or the NURBS curve control points by a constrained nonlinear optimization algorithm. The objective function is derived variously by derived curved. Constraints are distance measures between the original and the modified digitized data points. Changes I curve shape are analyzed by illustrations of curve shapes, and continuous plotting of curvature and torsion.

  • As shared electric kick scooters spread to cities worldwide as a result of the proliferation of personal mobility, they have emerged as a significant social issue, impacting pedestrian and user safety, as well as urban aesthetics. In this study, we propose solutions to the unique problems associated with shared electric kick scooters, such as illegal parking, charging, and redistribution. Furthermore, we present research on supplementary services utilizing electric kick scooters in urban areas to enhance citizen safety and user satisfaction through the development of an autonomous electric kick scooter system structure and operational strategies. We suggest a low-cost autonomous electric kick scooter structure and propose AI processing, sensor fusion, and system operation methods to add autonomous capabilities to affordable electric kick scooters. Additionally, we propose operational systems and related technologies for offering various supplementary services.
